It was pretty slushy today, but 3-6" expected overnight. This means that everyone will be driving like complete morons tomorrow, and I will elect to stay off the road instead of going to the grocery store. Fortunately I have a big ol' pot roast in the fridge for tomorrow's supper. The fish and leeks and potatos sound great, Seth. I did stop by today and folks were loading up on TP like 3-6 feet were forecast.

Very close. You'll like it.

Looks like a decanter to me. Vases don't usually have a lip like the top of that one does.

I live in the Washington DC area. It's probably a combination of factors, the job market here, the number of immigrants, and the relative affluence of the area, that force the fast food places to rely on adult workers. I've found while trying to find babysitters that most of the suburban teens here have no interest in working because their parents give them money.

OK, what's next? A meal from ANWTC? Or something from J & J?
-
It's also pretty clearly a piece of chicken breast. That would be one hell of an assembly process if it were a conglomeration of several, 'cause it sure fooled me. And I don't know where you are, but the BKs where I live aren't operated by "pimply-faced" teens. Almost every fast food place around here, not just BK, is owned by immigrants and staffed by adults.

My husband will never again confuse pancetta for prosciutto. He made a sandwich and was wondering why it didn't taste right and was so hard to chew... I had to inform him that he was eating raw bacon.

G, how about the seafood bread recipe from Julia & Jacques? It looked delicious when he made it on the show.

There really aren't any independent butchers in the SS/Rockville area. The butchers at the Kentlands Whole Foods (not Rockville) are very good, but if I want something special I go to Sutton Place in Bethesda. They have very good meat, good sausages, and the guys behind the counter are great. It's the only place where we can reliably get tasso, andouille, and smoked, not fresh, chorizo.

What Malawry said. The fish counter at Han Ah Reum is excellent. The Thai market has virtually no produce, but it's the only place where I can reliably get the right condiments, lime leaf, and holy basil that isn't slimy. Plus the owners know what I'm talking about WRT Thai ingredients - not always the case at the Chinese and Korean groceries.

Hi Joe. There's a great little Thai market on Thayer Ave in downtown SS, also has a carryout which isn't bad. For produce, if you're anywhere near Takoma Park, they have a good farmer's market. You may have better luck with produce at the Whole Foods in Rockville or Gaithersburg. Also worth the drive is the Freshfarm market at Dupont Circle on Sunday mornings. Go to Wheaton and check out the Chinese and Kosher groceries there, like Han Ah Reum on Georgia Avenue, or come on over to Rockville and shop at Kam Sam or Maxim. Korean Korner, at the intersection of Randolph Road and Viers Mill Road, is worth a visit too. Happy Hunting.

User badthings, a couple of days ago you described two groups of Bayless attackers, one as Could you elaborate on that?

So? What did you get? You could probably guess, Heather! They are: Lidia's Italian-American Kitchen, Cooking at Home with The Culinary Institute of America, and Sally Schneider's A New Way to Cook. Is Lidia's I-A Kitchen a different book than Lidia's Italian kitchen? And I leafed through the CIA book yesterday and liked what I saw. I am buying ANWTC and the CIA book today, plus a couple of others I've had my eye on. Four more for me, Maggie.

So? What did you get?

This is my new favorite variety, but I think they're disappearing from the local stores. Fragrant, crisp and juicy. Imported Pink Ladies are my next fave.

How on earth could you know that? If he had never done a thing for charity in his life, then suddenly decided to give away the BK bucks, it might be suspicious. If he didn't announce right away that he was donating the fee to his charity, I would guess it's because he had no idea that a bunch of (insert gratuitous name-calling here) would jump all over his shit.

That would put me right off my food. Wait, it was a BK. I generally don't find that the music has to match the ethnicity of the retaurant for me to enjoy my meal. Mayhaw Man... Hilarious! Damn, it hurts to laugh while drinking hot coffee.

Sorry, I had a roommate with a fatal weakness for British prog rock. I've heard enough ELP, Yes and King Crimson to last me a lifetime. Although "Still... You Turn Me On" is a pretty good song. For ELP.

Oh my. I'd prefer the Velvet Underground.

I am, tonight. Our house is being inspected this afternoon, so I will have plenty of time to while away at the grocery store. Let's just hope that the local Whole Paycheck has celeriac. Propose away, Seth. Everything in that book looks delicious, and it's one of Matthew's favorites.

Navy bean soup with andouille. Bacon and grilled Gouda sandwiches prepared in the magic bags. Honeycrisp apples (my new fave variety). Georges Duboef Beaujolais Nouveau

Why, lookie there. Page 345, Chicken Liver Pate with Golden Raisins. She substitutes the fat with chestnut puree and egg yolks, and adds said raisins, armangac or cognac, and allspice for flavor. Sounds pretty good. Steak Diane for us tonight, but if I can get some nice looking livers at Whole Foods I may try this.

I thought that was something else. I agree with Busboy. Lust, then gluttony. From the website www.deadlysins.com (no, I did not make that up): Whoa.

Hear hear. I cannot conceive of a place like Eagan's being non-smoking. Has the smoking ban really had an affect in Montgomery County? There's not really much dining except for family restaurants, and no nightlife to speak of. Now, DC establishments will have issues if the ban extends to nightclubs and not just restaurants.
-
FWIW, Rockville, MD is considering following Montgomery County's lead and banning smoking in restaurants and bars. Isn't it usually confined to the bar area in most places? I'm asthmatic and smoke occasionally (yes, I know), but truthfully, the only time it's an issue is when I go somewhere like the 9:30 Club where several hundred people are smoking at once. Are nightclubs included in the legislation?
