Bleah. Thanks Ronnie. I generally avoid farmed salmon because it tastes fatty and bland...but because it's one of my kid's fave foods I'd been getting the Costco stuff. No more I guess.
-
Seth, how's the puff pastry going? I've never made it at home. I'm going to shop for a whole lotta onions tomorrow morning. Did anyone see the yahoo news item about eating farmed salmon? Apparently it's so loaded with chemicals that researchers are recommending limiting servings to about 8 oz. a month. I will hunt it down and post a link. In the mean time it's the wild stuff for us if there's any at Whole Foods.

Just ask for a burrito with no rice. Much better that way.

Pan, your family lived in many different places, right? Perhaps it was the lack of 60s and 70s nutritional advice and advertising that made your mom's cooking so good. My mother is an excellent cook, when she sticks to real food. She just read waaaay too many women's magazines while we were growing up. She always served margarine, because she had read somewhere that it was "better for you" - we know now that's a myth. According to the ads, boiling rice is a chore and Uncle Ben's was easier - again, not true. All of her better recipes come from family or the Fannie Farmer cookbook. Every mistake was from Ladies Home Journal or a similar rag.

OK, you just brought back a repressed memory. La Choy Chop Suey. Bleeeech. I can still remember the soggy water chestnuts. And yes, my mom served it with chow mein noodles and Uncle Ben's rice. I always thought I hated rice, until I left home and started making just plain boiled rice. What I hated was Uncle Ben's. And Brooks' post about aspic made me remember the raspberry jello/tomato juice aspic she decided would be perfect with our prime rib Christmas dinner - she made it every year until all of us made her stop a couple of years ago. Egad it was awful. And the cucumber/cottage cheese/lime jello mold for Easter, to go with the canned ham and pineapple rings, was a horror too.

Now Bill, no one did drugs in the 80s. We all "just said no," remember?

Or better yet, get one of those professionally made cakes where they can actually airbrush sugar pictures on them with a computer. I'm thinking the Synchronicity album by the Police, or Darryl Hall and Jon Oates. Or a Madonna cover. oh wait. WHAM! or The Breakfast Club. Or the chick on the "Rio" album - the colors would go nicely with raspberry coulis.

One other thing - mom was diagnosed with high blood pressure in the 70's, when it was standard to eliminate salt from the hypertensive's diet. She never cooked with salt again - never even puts it on the table. All of her baked goods, everything she makes, is unsalted. Bleah. Growing up it with it was bad, now that I only eat her food occasionally it's worse. All despite the fact that she isn't sensitive to salt and it has made no difference in her blood pressure over the years.

Mom was a pretty good cook, but one recipe was the bane of my existence: "Seafood" Casserole. It consisted of Campbell's Cream of Shrimp soup, tasteless frozen fish, teeny tiny frozen shrimp, and sherry, all baked with a sprinkling of parmesan cheese (the green can). Served over rice. The thought of it still makes me gag. Thank God Cream of Shrimp was discontinued so that this abomination cannot be served to future generations of our family.

I bet Martha could kick her ass.

You're welcome! I love Giuseppe's. So glad you enjoyed the experience. Their pizza and chicken parm subs were a staple of both my pregnancies. That shopping center is being torn down, but they will be relocating to the building next to Regal theater. I hope they keep the linoleum and video games.

LOVE pissaladiere. I'd be happy to make it this weekend, probably as a meal rather than an app though. I've always used the recipe in Mastering the Art. Haven't tried the salmon in a potato case. If it has a potato case, would you want a potato side? And pink fish and red cabbage doesn't sound exciting, I agree.

I'm sorry Michael. I read that statement over and over again, but honestly can't work out how it's telling people who keep kosher that their beliefs are incorrect.
-
Well put. It should be brought up more often. It's an old Christian statement, one meant to justify violation of Kashrut - one of the things that caused the Jewish Christians to be considered heretics and split them off from the Jewish community. The context of the statement and its target cannot be ignored. It's one thing to make a personal choice about whether to restrict one's diet or not, and quite another to make polemical statements against Kashrut. I think we should be careful not to be disrespectful toward people's religious dietary laws. We don't have kosher-observers on eGullet upbraiding treif-eating Jews as sinners, so how about if all of us, Jew and non-Jew alike, don't belittle or otherwise argue against the observance of kashrut. I notice that the kosher-observers in this thread haven't taken offense, but nevertheless. Huh? Exactly how is this offensive? Did I miss something?

Yeah, just a minor renovation. Sounds like it will be great once it's done. Maybe I could take a solo drive down to Raleigh for the weekend. Scott's out of town all this week and he's gonna owe me one.

Oooh, good luck. I still have a bunch of this to do - moving date is 2/26! Are you moving to a new city, Susan? First thing we're doing is remodeling the kitchen in our new place. We may have to live with electric skillet cuisine for a while.

Emma's dairy allergy has renewed my interest in cooking asian food. I have the Japanese volume of the Time-Life Foods of the World, and that's it, so I'd like something I little more up-to-date. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Matthew said to carry on without him for the time being. Come back soon. And good for Dave! I hope he, Mrs Dave and the kids had a good time. We are thinking of taking our kids to NYC in the spring. One restriction I will have is Emma's dairy & egg allergies. We have to cut out all dairy & eggs for the time being. Salmon cooked on its skin? I love this, from J&J. And maybe one of the veggie preparations from ANWTC?

Johnny Rocket's Original with extra pickles. With fries or onion rings, and a real cherry or vanilla Coke. Or a real chocolate milkshake. The only Johnny Rocket's anywhere near us is in an outlet mall 30 miles away, so I have one about twice a year. If I have to do regular fast food, it's either Taco Hell's bean burritos with no onion, or Wendy's spicy chicken sandwich. For time machine sandwiches, I gotta go with the Double R Bar Burger mentioned above, or the ill-fated Chicken Littles from Kentucky Fried Chicken. BTW, Holly, all of the Roy Rogers around DC have been turned into McDonalds. I think it really is defunct.

Bagel City is still there. It's in a run down shopping center with TGI Friday's and Office Depot. That piece of "art" is awful but it makes a good landmark. I had no idea that Houston's was a chain until a couple of years ago. I love their cole slaw and the burger with cheddar and BBQ sauce.

I have only ever had dinner at Addie's, and it's been good to very good. Never tried the lunch buffet at Bombay Bistro, but I've heard it's a good deal. Their breads are good, as is anything grilled. Cuban Corner is good for lunch, but I've personally never tried anything but the sandwiches. It's next to to Carribean Feast which had a decent goat curry as of a couple years ago. Both of these places are on the Pike north of the White Flint area. If you find yourself on North Washington Street near the courthouse, stop by Giuseppe's Pizza. Not the best pizza I've ever had, but it's good and a Rockville institution.
-
Seth, you, me and marie-louise seem to be the only ones with any interest in this thread. Matthew is MIA and no-one else appears to be posting. Maybe we should let it go or start a new thread?.
-
How could I forget Bombay Bistro? I was just there two weeks ago. It's great, and owned by the same folks as Indique. The Korean restaurant mentioned above is Sam Woo, and it is good. Also, check out El Pollo Rico, also on Rockville Pike, for Peruvian rotisserie chicken with special sauce.

Hey, I live here and have trouble fiding decent places to eat sometimes. Here's where we go: Addie's A & J Restaurant New Fortune Lebanese Taverna Cafe Tara Thai & Tara Asia Benjarong Thai Farm (in King Farm subdivision) HaKuba (in the Kentlands) Momo Taro Sushi Cuban Corner There's more but it's too early for me to think of their names. We haven't been to the Tower Oaks Lodge yet - nice to hear about the raw bar.

Good luck. I swore that all of my kid's food would be homemade, but gave up when I found that they spit out the homemade stuff because it wasn't smooth enough. Maybe little Iris will be less finicky. If not, Whole Foods carries a decent selection of organic. In addition to pickling and canning (Guajolote is my role model ), I would love to maintain a real garden. Our new house is not across from a forest (ie DEER) preserve, so perhaps our tomatoes and lettuce will feed us instead of the wildlife. And make my own stock more often.
