    Dinner 2021

Thanks. But you give me too much credit on all counts!
  2. The linked recipe for poached egg had me shaking my head as I couldn’t quite conceive of a sauce pan in the microwave! But I did think there were some interesting points made about the use of the microwave. Kafka’s book was amazing. I have always found the reference to wattage is less helpful than one might think. The microwave up in Manitoulin Island where I used to spend summers had a lower wattage than my own microwave and yet I was able to burn things in it very easily. Mine claims to be 1100W and yet when I am making instant noodles I must always add time.
  3. The name most definitely rings a bell but even though I am from Derbishire I don’t recall ever eating one. Sounds tasty. Thanks for this. It will be a new line of conversation with my sister in the near future as her experience with Derbishire is much longer than mine.

The thing is, at least from my perspective, you can reach an age or a state of physical decline where hot oil in any quantity is just a bad idea. Similarly for people who have the patience and the attention span of a gnat. I see air frying as a much safer option. I gave away my air fryer because the things it did best are not really the things that I like to eat!

    Ormers

That was absolutely my first thought! I have never sampled them and in all honesty this is the first time I have ever heard of them.
  6. I was just listening to the CBC and apparently one of the things that made it difficult to get them correct south of the border was the lack of a source of Birdseye custard powder. Here is some more interesting background on Nanaimo bars.
  7. I had completely forgotten that we had our own Nanaimogate! Here
  8. “Most examples of microwave mug cakes have a whiff of desperation about them, but Pinch of Nom’s chocolate lava mug cakes look rather good. Dan Lepard’s steamed sponge pudding relies on an egg-rich, dry-ish batter to keep the whole thing from becoming what he describes as “a stodgy, airless mass”. Here.
  9. We managed lunch again this week although we were too lazy to take it out of the containers! This time it came from a small chain serving Mediterranean-style food (Montforts). For Kerry: calamari and kibbeh with salad. For me: calamari and chicken shawarma with rice and salad.
  10. Yes I know. I guess my humour is not coming across too well. I’m going to keep my day job.
  11. And I’m trying to push @chromedome’s buttons. 😂
  12. What? You’re kidding me right? If only the big Mac you pull out of its cardboard container had any resemblance whatsoever to the ad that persuaded you to buy it in the first place!
  13. Absolutely. How could I forget butter tarts. Even sweeter than Nanaimo bars but I can eat those.
  14. The ones I have tried are incredibly sweet. I am not a fan. However, they are one of the few cuisine-related things we Canadians can claim as our own. Or at least we think we can! No doubt someone will point out that they originated elsewhere.

    Wow. That is really sad.
  16. An instagram posting has raised the ire of some Canadians — particularly those on the West Coast — for depicting the Nanaimo bar incorrectly. Here.

    Eel

My late husband was a huge fan of smoked eel. Always made an appearance when we had a Danish lunch and we bought it at Christmas. I found it just too rich. My stomach rebelled.
  18. If your heart is set on cornbread then this will not be of value to you. When the borders were open and I could travel I would often pick up a loaf of jalapeño cheese bread from Wegmans for my son-in-law. I then began simply adding chopped, pickled jalapeños to my own cheese bread recipe. I’m not suggesting it’s the same as cornbread but is very good and just another alternate way of incorporating jalapeños into bread.
  19. While I love Panko in many preparations I think it’s out of place in schnitzel but your mileage may vary. Definitely blitzing it should help.
  20. I don’t think we’ve ever had much of a street food tradition here in Ontario. Hot dog/Polish sausage carts and at one time there used to be roasted chestnut vendors but I think they all disappeared. As someone else noted, Food trucks began appearing just before shut down or perhaps longer than that. ,
  21. Thanks. I could not access the article that you linked to for some reason. I was able to get a good handle on the story here.
  22. @Kerry Bealand I were discussing getting together at my house for lunch tomorrow when I realized that I had not even posted our last lunch which was a week ago. We decided we would continue supporting our small Vietnamese restaurant. Kerry‘s lunch. Hardly to be believed but the restaurant had run out of rice! Kerry was quite happy to have the meat lovers dish served over a salad! The Wednesday special was this soup with dumplings and lots of vegetables and noodles.
