  1. Kenta Goto, formerly head bartender at Pegu Club, has opened a Japanese-style cocktail bar, with izakaya-style snacks. At least that's what all the pundits are calling it. We've been only once (hey, it just opened this week), but I am sure to be back many time, A gorgeously redecorated space, with Kenta's cocktails, and some tasty food. What could be bad? Here's my take, on Tasty Travails.
  2. Agree on the National Museum of the American Indian. It's a super fun place, with good food to boot. Cheap, also.
  3. I think your best all-around spot for barbecue, in a tourist area, coming in at under $100 per couple, will be Hill Country. The brisket can be very good - ask for fatty!
  4. And when it's bad, it's... Kidding - I still like the once in a while meal at Nom Wah, just not for weekend brunch. I would've recommended Maialino and R & D as well. Then again, I'm not a brunch person.
  5. In the district itself, I've always had good luck at places like Estadio and Jaleo. Once you get into the suburbs, the restaurant scene changes dramatically, and you can find some fine Vietnamese, Chinese, and other se Asian places. Of course, there's Little Serow in the district, usually involves some waiting around.
  6. There really aren't any "best" ribs in DC. This place does a fair job...The Tender Rib. Tim Carman ranks bbq here. Older, from DCist. There's also Hogs on the Hill - I've gotten lucky there once in a while.
  7. This is good and timely. My wife and I will be visiting Madrid for the first time this fall. I'm hoping to go to DiverXO, but at this point in time, it doesn't appear as if they'll be open the week we're there. What's the word on D-STAgE? And coincidentally, the NY Times just did a little piece on Madrid in this week's Travel section... Travel Tips for Madrid
  8. Ooooh, ooooh, I see one!

    The Perfect Burger

How about just compressing them a bit more? I made burgers for 100 people yesterday, and not a single one fell apart, nor were they too compressed.
  11. You can sell that one to Hassouni when you're done with it!
  12. Did you buy a food processor and a table top juicer?

    Breakfast! 2015

This Time to Eat thread got me thinking this morning... With a nod to Mission Chinese Food's salt-cod fried rice, this is Tasty's "Lower East Side" fried rice, with smoked whitefish.
  14. I like to check the temp of my pizza stone when I'm doing pizza on it. As well as pans before sautéing, but basically it's a geek's tool. I also use it to check the body temp difference between my wife and me - for some reason, she's always 4° - 5° warmer than me.
  15. Nothing like a French omelet and a nice little salad for dinner, is there? We're regular breakfast eaters, at an early hour (between 7 - 8 AM) during the work week. But it's 9 times out of 10 a savory breakfast. Toast with a slice of cheese, or sausage and egg, etc. And generally a bowl of assorted fruit. Dinner can be any time between, say 6 PM and 10 PM, but I dislike going to sleep within 2 hours of having eaten.
  16. I like David's blog, and he's helped me previously on trips to Paris. But - this is another solution to a problem that has already been solved. A lot of work, and there is already good stuff on the market and easily available. Maybe not in France, though...
  17. I would have one of those immediately - it looks great.
  18. You're better women than me!
  19. Are there 3 of you for lunch (including the student) or only 2? If 3, how do you decide who gets which extra crostini?
  20. Flay's probably most in the fray, followed by MB and then, at this point in his life, AB.
  21. I think (at least from experience in a friend's backyard) that lower, indirect heat is better for outdoor oyster cooking. And months with an "R" are even better.
  22. Sort of like the Jewish vegetarian chopped liver - FEH!
  23. With a silvia and a rocky, trust me, I know from grind size!!!!!!! I also know about the width of the stream...but that may be related to aging, or something.
  24. 8 characteristics of water! Now you've convinced me...
