There are certain offal dishes that I grew up with that i do like. Examples: kidneys, sweet breads, blood sausage, and chicken hearts. Fashionable has nothing to do with it since I tend to eat at ethnic dives. I'll admit to liking the beef offal soup at Sripraphai (Thai)...which definitely includes challenging flavors. :)

The sample menu reminds me that I've been menaing to go to Tea & sympathy (NYC) to try their Toffee Pudding. :)

Years back when i had an office job for the nyc parks dept the Parkies used to complain about people picking ginko nuts in a particular park (don't remember which). The parkies said something about people picking the nuts...leaving behind a stinky mess (of discarded material) that people step in. Plus...the parkies wanted to propegate them...which was tough if all the nuts were taken.

I tend to bring fresh fruit on roadtrips such as apples pears, etc... Also, dried fruit, nuts, trailmix. And I bring a lot of (drinking) water. :) This supplements the sandwiches. :)

I wound up walking Dc but not hitting Georgetown. I walked the smithsonian, chinatown, dupont circle, adams morgan, etc...eventually eating at Capital Q. Thanks for the help guys. I'll save all the info you gave me for next trip. :)

I even like the chicken gyro at Karavas. :) *ducks and runs away*

Thanks guys. Old Town Alexndria, done that, I have a relative around there. Any other suggestions then? Has to be by metro I really may wander Georgetown...but maybe I'll head elsewhere for food. I wouldn't be driving, btw. Theres a short shuttle bus from the metro.

Thanks for the suggestions every1 Malawry: I hate to admit it....but if I go to Geaorgetown...food isn't my primary concern..I want to walk around and look at the shops. But...since I can't go anywhere for a signifacent portion of the day and not eat (hopefully good food)...I figured I'd ask for some suggestions. I have a day (Friday) to kill while my g/f is at work. I've already done most of the museums, and walked Dupont Circle and Adam's Morgan...so i'm running out of things to do that will amuse me for a day. I actually did get some Georgetown recommendations from elsewhere...so georgetown is still in the running. :) As a far as Chinatown...I asked about the Burmese place since we don't have much of that (worth mentioning) here (in NYC). Its just that i would need to find stuff to do besides Chinatown since its so small. ---- BTW, did you go to Grand Sichuan Sunday? You never did message me about it.

I've been to Tony Cheng's Seafood (upstairs.) :)

It looks like I'll have a free day in DC coming up and figured i'd wander Georgetown and see the shops. I need somewhere inexpensive to eat. Ethnic or regional American would be good, but I'm open to suggestions. Alternate idea: Anything inexpensive and good in Chinatown? The Burmese place? The BBQ joint? I realise Chinatown is small so i would have to hit another nabe as well to kill the time. (I've already hit the museums and Adams Morgan though.)

I agree. When I go to a specific group of friend's parties I tend to bring stuff I wouldn't dream of eating myself (stuff filled with dulce de leche as an example.) They love the stuff, and I'm happy that they do. I'd rather eat pumpkin custard from sripraphai...but it won't fly.

I went yesterday and split a 1/4 pound of chocolates with a freind...so I got 6 pieces...all dark. Of them...I really liked the expresso and the pistachio. Two I didn't like and two were eh. The passionfruit I know I didn't like, the others I don't remember. My friend liked the hit chocolate...but I had already had hot chocolate a couple of hours before at Donut Plant and wasn't ready for more. -
I'm still having fun with my home made quince paste and manchego and idiazabal (sp?).

Sorry guys, but my I'm going to have to cancel. My job needs me to do something that evening, so it conflicts. I tried to get out of it...but it wasn't happening. Another time. So scratch 2 off the list.

Other than the standard sides...I like to use greenmarket fall veggies. Often i'll do mashed turnips or rutabegas, and/or pickled beets w/garlic.

I don't see it on yellow.com. Here are the directions Nina posted. I may go my own if I can't wait till Nina to plan Tangra Masala again. :) --------- Take the R or V train to Grand Ave/Newtown. If you are on the express trains (E or F), switch to a local train at Roosevelt. Grand Ave is two more stops. Ride toward the front of the train, and take the exit at the very front of the station. Out of the turnstiles, take a left towards Queens Blvd South side. Take the stairs on your right. Continue on Queens Blvd in the direction out of the exit stairs, past the furniture store. Grand Ave is at the end of the block. You should see the awning for Tangra Masala across the street.

We bought spicy hot chocolate (both the mix and by the cup) directly from Jacques at last years chocolate show. He was a riot: *in French accent* "Men, buy eat my chocolate. the ladies will love you. Ladies, beware. I'm drinking saome now. " LOL. BTW, the chocolate show is the weekend of 11/15 this year. www.chocolateshow.com. -
Well Said. I fell the same way. Anyway...I find it funny that Campbells market their soups as ingredients (as opposed to just as soups.) :) There are different levels of the phenomena i guess. i have a friend who adds (sauteed ground) meat and a variety of herbs to (good) prepared tomato sauces...and that's close enough to cooking since work and thought goes into it. I don't feel sorry for those who can't cook, but I feel sorry for those who can't cook but think they can. :)

LOL. "Beau" is definitely the wrong word for the (male) friend I'm bringing. Trying to make my g/f jealous? :) Glad to have made the cut. :)

Yeah, but thats for a different restaurant, rockcentercafe. Brasserie 8 1/2 is better, right?
-
I had a good meal at Brasserie 8 1/2 last year. Nice food, decor, and service. It was a nice place to take a date. I used one of their $50 certificates, so it was affordible. They (Restaurant associates) are giving $25 certs for Brass 8 1/2 now, although they still give $50 for Nick and Stef's. Here is their the link for the discounts: http://www.ra-dineout.com/ra/ I wanted to rost the report on the other food site at the time but they were blacklisting Brasserie 8 1/2. They may not be blacklisted anymore.

I've eaten a lot of unwashed fruit (usually on the run) with no ill effects. I've been more careful lately. I will say that i'm more careful with scalding pasta water after pouring some on my feet a couple of years ago. I wasn't wearing shoes, only socks. Ouch.

Most of my friends would go down with the ship regardless...so unless I'm dining alone (which is rare) I don't really have the option to just walk out. I was treated like crap at a Queens Argentine restaurant (by the owner) once....and there was still no way the 2 friends I was with would have walked (party cuz their food was good, and they wanted to go back.) They still eat there although I don't. Do you guys have dining partners who would just walk out with you?

Ah, got it. You ahve in your mind what good pizza should be, and if it fits that mold..then its good. That is the mindset I find in people who don't like Di Fara's. I try to be more open minded when i try things. If it tastes good, its good. :) Please dont take offense Jason. None is intended. Goats milk/cheese does contain some lactose, enough to bother me a little if I don't take lactaid...but I'm extremely lactose intolerant. Hey Nina: Do u think Dom would make Jason a goat cheese pizza if he brought the cheese w/him? I feel bad that he can't eat pizza. :)
