  1. they're closed on monday, so calling won't help either.
  2. trying each of varmint's grappas satiated any possible craving i'll ever have for the stuff.
  3. sadder than john ritter dying? it's interesting that varmint thought the highlights of babbo were the pasta dishes. i always thought their pastas were outstanding as well, and generally remember them more than their meat or fish dishes. i thought i was alone!
  4. which one?

If someone's willing to drive.... I will take that as a hint in our direction. We'll arrange for a caravan of cars to pick people up from the ferry or something, but not for a couple weeks I think. i don't think white manna will hold a caravan of cars! (tiny little thing).

    Lobster 101

i just watched lidia bastianich cut apart a lobster and throw it in hot oil like no one else. somehow this thing was still trying to breath, and it was still moving, well after she cut it in half. pretty neat.
  7. that place on lex at 28th has fresh curry leaves.

i would say that even at 12 dollars, you're getting an inexpensive meal.
  9. and ain't that subjective.

and where will you get a decent steak for 11-15 bucks?
  11. i'm sure they're well-respected. but my points still stand about pricing. although i'm the last person to suggest that 60 bucks is mid-range. in fact, i think that's kinda cheap, if one includes a full a meal and wine. so i'm basically wondering what i mean.
  12. oh beans, you're right. I was talking about RL from my experience, which is the greater NYC area. where was my head. edit: who the fuck are Robert Parker and Michael Symon? do they have restaurants?
  13. i dunno about that. 5 bucks makes me a good meal. there, i said it too.
  14. i have a hard time delimiting entree prices that generally fall btwn 12 and 22 dollars. i'm not a bartender, but i look at the bill at the end of the meal. i appreciate your perspective, although i don't find it particularly telling when discussing the cost of dinner in NYC, as non-drinkers can eat at jean-georges for 65.

    i'm in.
  16. i've made a very nice meal out of those 5 dollar chickens with a little butter, herb, and TLC. and sides. but i don't make stock.
  17. i don't think there's any ganging up. i just think that people who eat daily in NYC would be more able to define "cheap" and "mid-range" than someone who doesn't. and i'm surprised that we need to discuss it. although, given the subject, i'll suggest that eating at RL with wine will cost at least 40 bucks per head.

good. my recs are: S&W molly's tavern on jane chumley's blue smoke and i want to try McHale's. i'm more of a lunch guy, and i'll only go out during the week. that probably makes me "out" for a lot of these things.

i'm in. although i'll probably skip the places that i know suck.
  20. chicken done well has actually moved me. perhaps i'm in the minority.
  21. i eat in NYC a lot. i don't consider 40 cheap. i consider 20 cheap. actually i consider 10 cheap. but i'll settle for 20. perhaps a new thread on "what defines 'cheap' in NYC" would be appropriate?
  22. i do love when a voice of reason shows its face. thanks dude.
  23. glenn, i thought you left in a huff.
  24. gossip is for tourists. sounds like you guys had a good time. i can't imagine how they're going to eat a meal at Blue Hill after all of that!
