  1. what if it's a business dinner? what if your babysitter canceled at the last minute? what if it's a gift certificate? what else should one be able to afford if they can afford a high-end restaurant? seems to me that if you're spending a lot on a dinner, maybe you don't have a lot left over. well, it doesn't actually seem that way to me, but clearly that can be the case. and for many people, it is.
  2. then again, the fine dining public probably wouldn't run in those circles to begin with.
  3. perhaps you're overly sensitive to this type of thing then? we agree that it's certainly not the majority, and i can't imagine the percentage of people who are doing this as a "power" play is significant at all. probably about the same percentage as the people who drive SUVs because they have a small penis. it's an interesting theory, and yeah, maybe a few people with small penises have bought SUVs, but probably not as many as people want to think. I think the SUV/penis analogy is not a good one. i was using the analogy to point out that the percentage where it holds true is probably insignificant. although sometimes i have little faith in the human race and assume the worst as well. other times i think they couldn't get a baby-sitter.
  4. several people here have obviously had the burger. i don't recall anyone saying that it was big, or required some special technique to eat. seems normal, and not too much of a hassle to eat to me. in fact, i've had many burgers that were much bigger. edited for spelling. i'm not sure where my head is today.

  6. that seems like a very harsh generalization. and one that is clearly inaccurate a lot of the time. but i agree that they have different priorities than some others. but don't we all.
  7. i agree. the place reeked of fish. i stay clear.
  8. King Fung. mostly chinese for sure.
  9. amen.
  10. with every thread like this, i find myself sinking deeper and deeper into ingorance. Lord, help me. for i'm a dolt. not to mention, i get more confused about the proper way to pronounce words.
  11. i'd like to as well, although i'm not sure that my sense of taste would necessarily be keen enough to make any kind of solid determination. on a related note, there's a point at which one must take what countless others have said on a subject, and just kinda go with it.
  12. color me a saint mario following yuppie snob.
  13. this all strikes me as a lot of work for a coffee!
  14. here's a tip: when you go to a steakhouse, order steak. at least the place is smoke-free. that's a good sign.
  15. i'd be curious to hear some first hand reports on this place. seems like it might be a contender.
  16. because english is a strange and forgiving language. and because only a handful of people give a squat. edited for spelling.

    Cooking in cast iron

question for those who have done both: i find that the range gets the pan hotter than a 550 oven (at least the bottom of the pan). any thought on this?

    Starbucks

i meant that the man stops at starbucks when he wants coffee (from what i've read). i'm not sure what he uses in his restaurants, although i'm guessing it's not starbucks. though i wouldn't be surprised. i should have been clearerer.

jean-georges gets his coffee from starbucks.
  23. i've had some bad margaritas that have gotten me ill all through the next day. they tasted fine the night before.
  24. so it's kinda like that Korbel "champagne" they've been pushing on us for years. that's unfortunate. i guess i'll have to check the labels, or, better yet, find a brand that i enjoy and buy it exclusively. like pomi.
  25. how that i think about it, i don't think i skimmed at all. however, i didn't use pancetta and didn't go nuts with the butter and olive oil. perhaps next time.
