Thanls @Chris Hennes I am a NOLA fan. So on the gumbo sampling - do you just really like it or are you looking for your "this is tthe one" moment? On that roast pork are those frizzled onions or some cool pork skin thing?

It is a known quantity. Why do people go to McDonalds in Singapore - a food heaven? When I used to stop at the SB with the wonderful ocean view that I linked earlier I was always amused at the United Nations of mostly Eurropean tourists chattering away in line. I'd usually get the drft of what they were saying. Most were staying at the Terranea Resort with plenty of drink options but there they were in line at SB.

To gve them credit, every event I put on at the local Botanic Garden - they gladly donated the portable coffee things, plus cups , cream & sugar + stirrers. Peets did once.

Oh ya! Reminds me of something I read years ago from Madhur Jaffrey - how as a girl she kept salt in her pocket to sprinkle on sun warmed ripe tomatoes as she walked the garden.

We have a whole new world of opportunity. Lots of buzz on the possibiities. Who knows what people wil come up with to feed those awaiting charge. https://www.asce.org/publications-and-news/civil-engineering-source/civil-engineering-magazine/article/2023/06/ev-station-reimagined-to-support-communities-and-travelers

Not part of my personal experince. Mom good cook, I love all veg - my problem was not being allowed a second serving even of veg cuz I was "fat". but when my son worked in an eating disorder clinic for juveniles the stories teetered on almost funny but mostly sad. Finding a "stolen"burrito under a kid's pillow kinda stuff. Anorexics on verge of hospitalization staff had to sit and watch eating. Like a strawberry cut in thin slices over 10 minutes...

The white stuff. Never seen golden.

Cool you got some Macienda product. How did it compare to the ubiquitous masa harina like Maseca?

The classic toddler in the highchair scenario except both dog & kid start to make it a game and adult finally catches on.

I have Nescafe in the pantry. I've posted this before @Shelby https://www.mygreekdish.com/recipe/greek-frappe-coffee-recipe-iced-coffee/

Think of it as coffee icecream whipped up with a bit of ice and maybe an espresso shot. Leans dessert/treat. Long work time in your hot garden in need of treat - you'd be there My sister amd niece went a bit ago to the one I linked with the ocean view befoe a cliff walk. Known quantity and in this part of town we don't have coffee places like they do in Sydney.

There is also the culture of the staff knowing you. And it is also round here a safe after school hang or taxi wait for kids as they wait for pick-uo from parents or for tutoringg, Kinda like that old TV show Cheers about the bar "where everybody knows your name" There is one closer to the ocean look out with outdoor firepits. Major hang out spot. I was there once working n area and they had a major West Coast barista competition.Fun to watch. https://www.yelp.ca/biz/starbucks-rancho-palos-verdes-3?hrid=edZEOj_HjYgkk_b1Mpdaug&rh_type=phrase&rh_ident=fire_pit

No idea where you live but here they are in the Mexican aisle in mainstream groceries.

Restrooms also and A/C. Used to wait at the one nearest LAX for a text that my guests were here They did not have a public restroom for customers - sent you across parking lot to the large chain grocery. Claimed issues with homeless...

@liamsaunt honestly answered the question recently here https://forums.egullet.org/topic/164739-dinner-2023/?do=findComment&comment=2394042

Well the nickname is Charbucks. There are 2 close to me in adjacent shopping centers. Some major chain grocers have a SB kiosk inside. The bigger one closed during Pandemic. Its true value was as a gathering place/free office space. Job interviews, tutoring, good WiFi. An iced Passion tea and a spinach feta wrap "grilled" set me up for hours. The smaller older one was managed by a friend for a while. She won a contest for branch selling most capuchinos and won a VW convertable bug. SB finagled it so she did not personally have to pay the tax!

I have the base subscription but this is behnd the Cooking paywall. Maybe a brief description? My childhood versionis just with an Einbren - milk based roux with finely minced onion.

@Alex Wow different take - go for it. I have yet to poach an egg myself. Maybe this will propel me. Just not part of my food life experience

Hey at least you know and the $ hit not too bad. Truly does not sound appealing. Me - I'd pitch right away to erase from your life insted of confrontng in freezer

That is why 7-Up with both small bubble and sugar was given (maybe before Alka Seltzer "plop plop fizz fizz oh what a relief it is" - more for indisgestion.

Looks like the letters for cheeseburger out of order but if intentionally humorous - a mark was missed. For years I've looked at Asian packaging using English words like at the 98cent Daiso. A lot of awkward wording and cutesie images but not intentional clever humor.

@BeeZee reminded me of my first and only Baked Alaska . I've mentioned it before. I was maybe 16 and taking care of a 12 year old - the kind of super bright one that later got into several Ivys. She was easily bored. I got out mom's big 3 ring Betty Cocker Picture Cookbook and she picked Baked Alaska. It came out SO well. No camera. All these things even if one-offs gave me confidence to attempt most anything in the kitchen. Even pulling sugar!

I appreciate the consistency of your husband's bread as usual. Recipe does sound appealing esp with the dark meat chicken.
