  1. My friend won tickets to see Paula Deen at a food show and took me.

I was never a fan of hers and even less of one afterwards as Paula's son and husband did all the cooking while Paula ran around the audience promoting Smithfield and throwing food at the audience. Paula also pulled a piece of her fake hair out, stuck it on a bald man and demanded it back. Klassy!!

We also saw Guy Fieri. He at least cooked and was much more entertaining.

I wouldn't have paid to see either one though.

  2. Well I think that was a cerviche free episode and Jen can cook something other than fish!

Robyn needs to go. It was luck that she won immunity but then she had to keep running her mouth about it.

I really think Ron didn't know what paella is.

And Michelle did not seem to like Toby. Does anyone? Why is he still on the show? Bring in Jay Raynor from Top Chef Masters! Bring back Bourdain! Anyone but Toby!

  3. Did anyone else catch this on Oxygen? So far only one episode is airing. The series officially begins Sept 22.

The show is basically a behind the scenes look at the restaurant. There are going to be webisodes with her recipes.

A full review of the show is HERE

I watched the first episode and was underwhelmed. I think she comes off as obnoxious and unprofessional. I'll keep it on the DVR to see where they go with it.

  4. HA! The French chef ends up in the bottom of the French challenge! And Mattin LIED about the asparagus! I hate when they do that because dude everything is on film!

I almost felt bad for Ashley but I don't like her enough.

Great episode and I'd be nervous as heck cooking for that crowd!

If there's another season of Top Chef Masters I'd like to see Robuchon and Boulud compete. I know it will never happen but a girl can dream.

  5. I was worried the challenge was going to be really stupid like creating gourmet meals out of MRE's or something cheesy.

I'm so glad Michael schooled me on risotto. Maybe he should have auditioned for The Next Food Network Star.

I also found it interesting that it was Michael's idea to pair up with each pair making one dish, then he went off and made his own dish. Then he wanted to take credit for his own dish when he was in the winner's group but as soon as he was in the loser's group, it was a team effort.

  6. Everybody should eat more Mexican food. This weekend we made shrimp enchiladas with poblano-tomatillo sauce from the cover of bon appetit June 2009:

I couldn't find fresh tomatillos so they came from a can, and jalapeños subbed for poblanos. This one was a winner.

I made this and it was outstanding!

    No tomatillo shortage here.

  7. I think Jesse will be the next to go.  Jennifer, Kevin, Bryan and Michael - all strong contenders. Two James Beard nominees and a chef who works under Ripert MUST be treated seriously!

I agree. I had to roll my eyes and laugh when Jesse started to cry in front of the judges.

I think the men vs women idea is lame.

And I think whining about a possible challenge (we're in Vegas so there has to be a wedding challenge and I'm gonna hate it cuz I can't get married!") is lame.

  8. I still don't get why people seem so offended over Chef Chiarello. He didn't do anything that would have offended me if I'd been there so I can't really find a reason to be offended for those who were there.

Many people are offended by strong personalities and favor Oprah/Art Linkletter-like (never thought I'd put those two in tandem!) blandness.

Well I hated Linkletter and didn't particularly like Chiarello either. It is possible to avoid arrogance and excessive self-regard without being 'bland'.

I loved the finale, it more than made up for the slightly boring early episodes, in my view. I love it when the chef contestants (in either TC or Masters) are free to cook a great meal with a minimum of constraints.

Do you mean Art Smith? Or sis I miss a show where Art linkletter cooked?

  9. It was off-camera -- but who asked Jennifer if she were a pastry chef???  That was just wrong (unless, of course, it was out of context).

We saw a lot of Kevin this episode -- I was worried that the editors were trying to telegraph something.

It was the guy with the short black hair who was putting everyone down. He did make it to the winners foursome though.

Michael Isabella. He also said something about, "one less old lady to worry about" when the one contestant chose to keep her immunity. And during the quickfire he made a comment about how there's no way a girl could keep up with him.

Gail commented about his asshattery on her blog

Side note: I want to reiterate that as judges we do not see any of the interviews, kitchen antics, or behind-the-scenes footage of the chefs in action while we are shooting the show. Our producers are quite strict about this to deter us from developing any opinions about or relationships with the cheftestants other than through the food we are served, and rightfully so. With that in mind, I was shocked and disappointed when I recently viewed this first episode and heard Mike Isabella’s sexist commentary. Hot-tempered and foulmouthed indeed. He may have cooked us a delicious dish, but his attitude left a bad taste in my mouth. For better or worse, my feelings about each chef’s personality will stay out of the kitchen and away from the Judges' Table. But would I have judged him differently had I seen this side of him in advance? I guess we will never know …."

  10. I really like this group. Man Atlanta is representing!

That one woman's bloody fingers while shucking clams.

When Eli mentioned drinking Padma licked her lips. HA!

I do a lot of vegatarian/vegan cooking and I have never warmed up to seitan. The chef's earlobes scared me more. I guess I'm old because I don't get it.

Puck's comments cracked me up. I like him as a judge.

What bothered me about the show were the HUGE popup ads.

  11. It seemed to me that the producers told Dale to act his brattiest on the show. Espencially when he got in Michael's face with the "what are you going to do about it." It was over the top but maybe that's what he's really like.

I was also sorry to see Lo go and felt really bad for her when she found out she was going to be outside with her raw bar.

Keller and Bayless dishes looked fantastic. I probably would have asked for seconds

I can't pick a favorite between Keller and Bayless.

  12. Interesting challenge. I have a friend who is gluten intolerant and allergic to 160 (yes 160) foods.

I'll have to tell her about Michael's dish. I looked at the recipe and I think the only thing she'd have to omit is the black pepper.

I'm glad Anita survived too. That soup looked gross!

  13. I predict Anita or Rick will win.

Art's Scottish Egg was terrifying. I'm surprised he squeaked by. I do like his personality. He seems like such a sweet guy.

And I wish Jay would replace Toby on the regular Top Chef.

  14. I work with a woman who eats nothing but baked b/s chicken breasts and lima beans. Breakfast lunch and dinner.

I never chalked it up to a disorder. I thought it was odd but each to their own.

I did ask her once if she ever got bored with it an she said no.

I don't know her well enough to ask her about it until she offers up information again.

  15. Think in terms of Chefs who have namesake restaurants in Las Vegas who we don't often see on American television.

I'd like to see Thomas Keller. But I don't think that will happen.

I think I'd faint twice and die from intimidation if I were in a competition and he was a judge.
