  1. I automatically reduce the amount of sugar, when using ANY American recipes. Also, depends what kind of European breakfast you're talking about. When I'm travelling in Southern Europe (France, Spain, Italy), I expect a croissant and/or toast with butter and jam, some juice and coffee. When I travel in the Northern Europe (my native Estonia, Finland and the Scandinavian countries), I expect to find some oatmeal, yogurt and sliced black and white bread with a selection of cheese and ham, plus a coffee and perhaps some juice. When in the UK, I enjoy a full fry-up
  2. That chocolate and sauerkraut cake was delicious (and the recipe was from Mr Lebovitz himself ): I'd also recommend my Blue Cheese and Pear Tart - that was tasty and unusual: You could use pumpkin spice mixture to season the latter.

    Dinner! 2008

A proper pumpkin dinner yesterday. First - a pumpkin soup with nutmeg, then a pumpkin and ginger loaf.
  4. Your Rugelach looks perfect! ← Thank you, CanadianBakin'! Yesterday I baked a pumpkin and ginger loaf. Couldn't really taste the pumpkin yesterday, but today the flavour was much more pronounced (I had a slice for breakfast):
  5. I made rugelach for the first time recently: And these crispy lingonberry and oat cookies were also a huge hit:

    Rugalach

I haven't got a drop of Jewish blood in me, but a Jewish friend was visiting me recently, so I treated her to some homemade rugelach. VERY DELICIOUS indeed I used this recipe from Clarissa Hyman's book "The Jewish Kitchen: Recipes and Stories from Around the World". It's an American-Jewish recipe, using cream cheese. I used a mixture of hazelnuts and walnuts in the filling.
  7. My two latest favourites: Nigella Lawson's no-churn pomegranate ice cream and David Lebovitz' prune and armagnac ice cream. I also love-love-love sea-buckthorn sorbet, but those berries aren't probably easily available in the US..
  8. Our dessert last night: oven-baked toffee apples.

    Shake Shack

All by yourself?? I was told to go and try their 'shroom burger and frozen custard when visiting New York last month. I liked their burger and the custard was nice, but I couldn't finish the latter, as it was way too rich and way too much. And I hadn't eaten lunch, so I could save 'room' for the burger . Cannot even imagine having that huge mushroom burger, patty, double stack and a custard

    Gout

Ouch, Busboy You'll find recipes for ground-elder and vanilla muffins and ground-elder pie on my blog. They're delicious AND good for you, trust me (I've written more about ground-elder here). PS Ground-elder is also known as goutweed in English - and that's for a reason
  11. I'm enjoying the strawberry season and made a big bowl of Eton Mess for ourselves and our 6 guests tonight: Although it's such a simple 'recipe', it was very much enjoyed
  12. Here's something we've had for breakfast/brunch twice during this week already - Swiss Toast with Egg and Cheese: OMG, Pille. Yum! ← Thank you, Emilyr
  13. How did you like your meal at Niche? I was in St Louis earlier this month, visiting Alanna of A Veggie Venture food blog. She took me and a couple of her friends for a meal at Niche. Although it was a Tuesday night, the place was packed and very lively (read: bordering at noisy). We had mixed opinions about the food, but my cold cold buttermilk soup with beetroot ravioli was extremely delicious, and I did enjoy my roasted rabbit with orange-carrot risotto as well. For dessert I chose S'Mores ice cream, and it was great, but I cannot really judge, as it was the first S'Mores of mine For other starters, the fried pigs head with spiced pear looked and tasted great, but the mixed salad (highly recommended by our waiter) received mixed reviews. The service was friendly. I was rather surprised that for a restaurant at that price range and reputation, there were no amuse bouche to start with. Not even a simple basket of bread. We did have to wait for our starters for a while (and were very peckish), but once the food started coming, all courses arrived in good time. Another place I really enjoyed it St Louis was Pappy's Smokehouse - we had their pulled pork sandwich, which was really, I mean really-really, delicious. (Plus we got a tour of the kitchen and saw Walter, their BBQ. Sometimes it pays off to tell the owner that you've travelled from far-far away Estonia )
  14. Woah. That looks totally awesome! ← Thank you, Isomer You can find a recipe here. My other favourite cold soup is Spanish gazpacho, and I love this version.
  15. I love this topic! The summer is going to be nice and hot here, so various cold soups will make a frequent appearance in our kitchen Also, I'm hosting various cook-offs on my Estonian site, and 'cold soups' is scheduled for July I made a cold kefir soup with radishes, scallions, parsley, dill yesterday for lunch - very refreshing:
  16. I made a rhubarb and sour cream tart two days ago:
  17. I made baked eggy tomatoes with bacon and German rye bread for breakfast today:

    Dinner! 2008

Dinner last night: roasted cauliflower for starters and a tomato and fennel gratin for mains. No dessert (very unusual in our house).
  19. We had lunch at El Bulli in early April, and were offered a 'normal' printed wine list. Well, it's more of a book - the red one on this photo:
  20. Thank you, Abra - I'll tell him you said that He uses silicone molds, and they're always beautifully caramelized outside, yet creamy-custardy inside..
  21. Refreshing this old thread.. Though I do most of the daily cooking at home, my partner is an accomplished cook himself. He loves making cannelés, and he makes them whenever when I'm returning from abroad. I love this little tradition of ours So when I returned from New York few days ago, this what was waiting for me: That's the recipe he uses, and they are sooooo good..
  22. I had breakfast at the City Bakery in New York last weekend - twice, not just once A pretzel croissant, a latte and orange juice on both occasions. Now back home. On Wednesday morning I had couple of cannéles for breakfast (my boyfriend makes excellent ones, and always when I'm returning from a holiday ). Yesterday morning I had rhubarb muffins, today a tall glass of kefir with some frozen raspberries and agave syrup.

    Dinner! 2008

I'm finally getting over the jetlag after my 12 days in the US, so I'm starting to cook again. Tonight's dinner: Sherry and Orange Chicken with a Warm Fennel and Orange Salad and Parsley Rice: For dessert: the Scottish cranachan (again!) aka whiskey-oats-whipped cream-raspberries.

    Dinner! 2008

I had some lovely new season's white cabbage, so I made a typical Estonian peasant dish and simmered it with pearl barley and milk. Lovely, sweet flavour We enjoyed it with some buttered rye bread: For dessert - some rhubarb pie.

    Rhubarb...

Hey, Chufi! Is the rhubarb season really over in Holland already??? I tried another rhubarb and coconut dessert today, this time Coconut Creams with Poached Rhubarb. Delicious, again: (You cannot see, but there are lots of vanilla seeds in the rhubarb compote. MMmmm.)
