  5. I am the same as lcdm (Ukrainian Catholic)...the one thing that defines Easter for me is the making of the hrin (horseradish with beets). Always by hand (food processor? feh!) , always with my 85 year old father over my shoulder telling me I'm not doing it right, always comparing it strengthwise to last years batch...years ago my grandfather and father would make huge batches to give away to people who were too lazy to make their own.. Basket blessing on Holy Saturday...tasting 3 different kielbasys from 3 different butchers and arguing over which is better....always the same arguments every year. Love it.

Elmora bagels (still the best anywhere), Snowflake bakery (mmm butterhorns... although once in a while we trekked to Wood ave in Linden to go to Buttercake) or Mother Hubbards....I forget how the landscape has changed since I grew up around there (my parents still live off Park Ave) dbrociner do the words pappy and nooks mean anything to you? on a side note....people always mention Tabatchnicks and Goodmans, but does anyone miss Kartzmans in Irvington as much as I do?
  8. I love Sickles and shop there weekly. Another place which is along the same lines is Dearborn Farms on 35 in Holdmel. They also have a decent butcher and do very good catering if you are interested in that sort of thing.
  9. We go there probably once a month or so (we live in town). We love it. Best dishes are definitely seared scallops and duck breast salad (both appetizers), and for entrees the monkfish and grouper (best fish dish I think) and especially the pork tenderloin (I love this dish). For a little while they were doing a duck breast spring roll appetizer which was memorable, but I am not sure if it is currently on the menu. Unfortunately the best dessert, pineapple rice pudding in phyllo parcel, has only been available on two occasions, but if its there you should try it. The atmosphere is quite subdued, given the confines of the room. Service is professional and without fanfare. It is BYO and there is a liquor store in the small shopping center across the street if you forget. The only downside is the lack of waiting space if you can't get seated immediately (no reservations for parties less than 6). To combat this, I would plan on eating between 6-7 when it is least crowded. Like I say, we absolutely love this place and agree with all of the reviews it has received in the press, this forum being the only spot I have seen it get a less than stellar review.
  10. I believe this same "experiment" was done several (10 maybe?) years ago by Newcastle breweries in England and sold in a limited production through Harrods. Actually I know it was done since I have one of the bottles and a certificate describing the exact same process/details. It was a gift, but looks pretty neat in its nice presentation box.
  11. I've never had the wings at Bro Jimmys..must try and diversify from my standard rib tip munching ways. I have always liked the wings at the Bear Bar on 2nd ave and 92nd though.

  13. Milt was the best. Big biker dude. Ex police officer. Everyone in town (Easton, Pa) knew Milt and Milt knew everyone. He managed to procure us a full 4 keg tap system for our barroom from a local place he heard had lost its lease and was closing down. He was an ok cook when he wasn't drunk (ever present Bud quart and Pall Mall red) but lets be honest, you can't expect much on the lousy budget these guys have to work with. Breakfast was always the best. He knew everyone's "usual" so you never had to order, just show up in the kitchen. He always had a knack for "finding" menu items that were no way in our food budget, which was nice, and he would just say "someone left it here and I cooked it" He used to let anyone who was brave enough use his car as long as it came back. Great car...72 gold Ford Galaxy with no headliner, a rag stuffed in where the gas cap used to be, and Milt's name spray painted in big black letters on one side. I've met alot of different types of people in my short 40 years but never anyone quite like Milt. He wasn't a great cook but he was a great friend. I miss Milt.

  15. Yes, but I refuse to go there. As a native of JC, and born at the Hauge (my mom was director of OB nursing there so I imagine she helped deliver a few of you!) I take exception to this comment. Why is the venerable White Mana (the original I believe---at least I know the building dates from the 1939 Worlds Fair) held in such disdain?? I have tied on many many late night feedbags there and nothing beats it. note: I read somewhere that there were actually 4 or 5 White Manna diners in NJ in the 40s and only the 2 remain. Not sure why the dropping of the extraneous "N" in the JC one.
  16. I believe that was the very popular cafe that was on W Front St. which is now the Salvadorian restaurant. Used to go there for breakfast and lunch which were both very good. I thought I saw a sign that said they were open for dinner now, which maybe would indicate a change in menu? Not sure but if it is the place I am thinking of, they took over where Mulberry St restaurant used to be. Haven't been there since they moved.
  17. Only one choice really Lodge grill pan and be sure to get one of these Approved crud remover Season (or splurge for preseasoned) and you're all set. FYI don't drop it or you will definitely break something.
  18. I always had a traditional Thanksgiving when I lived in London (89-97) and never had a problem getting an excellent turkey from Porterfords in Bow Lane in the City. At most I gave 3-4 days notice and was never disappointed in quality. I can't vouch for recent quality as its been a few years.
  19. Rock, I grew up in the area and the place you are describing sound alot like a restaurant called Wyckoffs, which was a steak place on the corner of North Ave and Central Ave in a big white building. It closed a few years ago and there is a small mini mall there now I think.

  21. Speaking of sauce and Hoboken though, I must say how much I miss Hoboken Eddies late great restaurant. Best dry rub ribs anywhere
  22. Why would you ruin steak with sauce? I do however relish it as a dipping sauce for a buttered onion roll..mmmmmm
  23. Best side is Lyonnaise potatoes...haven't been to F&J since we left Hoboken 2 years ago. Need to find a babysitter so I can get a fix. As much as I love F&J, they are in no way "Lugers in NJ" They don't have the same quality of meat, and besides that, a good portion of people actually go there and do not order steak. I do prefer their sauce to PL however (not as sweet)

  25. Won't vouch for quality since its more on the catering rather than restaurant side, but you could try Water's Edge Beach club in Sea Bright for the ocean view. I will vouch for quality with a different (Navesink river) view at the Molly Pitcher in Red Bank.
