Best.Thread. Ever. too funny! oh, and by the way, PIE!

I would leave out a large package of sanitary wipes with a sign instructing everyone to use them to clean up any messes they make in or on the fridge. I'd also post "The Rules" on the side of the fridge. I like the idea of everyone pitching in to buy mayo, kechup, mustard, etc, and you could tell the cleaning person to leave them be. We also left a roll of scotch tape out and let everyone know they could use it to neatly fold up the leftover food.

Good, I'm glad to help! be careful, it's very, very hot! It's serve yourself, and they have cream, sugar, and flavor enhancers, if you like. I just get mine black with sugar. Hope you enjoy.

I swear by the Wild Bean coffee sold at BP gas stations. And I'm picky about this stuff. Caribou is ok, I like Arabica better.

I'm in Cleveland ( waving hi) And the texture of the ones I've eaten was between that of a rich bisquit and a flaky pastry dough. I've had them stuffed with raisins, but also filled with strawberry jam. They are very, very good!

Chufi, thanks for another look at your wonderful city/culture/cooking, etc, etc. And have a wonderful birthday! -
I love to glaze mine with a mixture of apricot preserves, soysauce, ginger and garlic. simmer this in a saucepan on low heat till blended. No real recipe, more like taste to see if you'd like more garlic, etc. Add some black pepper too.

Sandy, you are doing a beautiful job with lovely pictures and food! Thanks for sharing, I'm really enjoying learning about your city. I love the pics of the stations and the markets. Btw, my daughter had a phase where she had Hello Kitty everything. I recall Alton Brown cooking the sliders and you did a great job. -
Oh my, beauteeeful! what do you stuff the mushrooms with? I use mild sausage, browned and drained, bread crumbs, a touch of minced onion bread crumbs and cream cheese. Crazy good. Love the dessert table, wow!

you have to cook them covered, it's a must. and, I always start mine way ahead of time, just in case the potatos do take longer to soften up. I agree, that's not enough liquid, you need to add milk.

Cut up fresh fruit is wonderful with sandwiches. how about a platter of fresh cut up vegetables and a dip for them? homemade potato chips too. Everything sounds good, frankly!

Oh, Yum! Cheesesteaks coming up? -
When pregnant with my first, my mother was baking a pork roast and I had to leave the house. Ugh, I'll always remember that. I too threw up in my own backyard, hubby could not get the door open fast enough. But take heart, it does pass, and you'll be ok. For me, oddly, the one thing I could count on not to upset my stomach was a tossed salad and pita bread. For my second pregnancy, other than the no period thing.. I opened the fridge up and wanted to puke my brains out. that was how I just knew I was preggers again.. Oh, and simmering potpurri make me sick. To this day, my mom cannot stand the smell of a certain soap that made her sick during her pregnancy!

Me too! There's nothing like it on a cold winter evening in ohio.

Me too Anna, that soup is wonderful, I've been making that since I was still living with my parents.

gini, my experience was to follow the planting instructions on the seed pack, make sure they have plenty of sun, and water but don't over water. Herbs are not picky, for the most part. We grew basil, dill and parsley.

That's a cool picture, Sparrow! we have snow this morning too... We were out last weekend doing the first stages of the clearing of the garden debris. What's cool about where I live is that my city recycles organic garbage into mulch. Here's a pic of last year's effort. This was the latter part of summer. To the left in the front you can see the lettuce going to seed. down the middle starting in the front is green beans, tomatos and squash, the cucumbers on the fence, the corn, which sucked last year, and the carrots and beets, which are hidden by the corn. Here's a front shot. please ignore Mr. Handsome. In this shot, to the left of the kiddie pool, you can see how dang much room the acorn and butternut squashes took. They pretty much took over that part of the lawn in addition to the garden! We joked that we'd wake up one morning in bed with those vines.. they were amazing. Directly left of the dog are the enourmous tomato plants from Burpees. They did fantastic, but we had pounds and pounds of green tomatos at the end of the season, although most of them ripened in the house.. we did five kinds, including a wonderful low acid yellow tomato. Right of the dog is the lettuce and green beans, both of which were winners last year. I'd like to get an early start, but last year we planted our herbs in April and then it snowed! we're west of Cleveland, Ohio. The big losers of last year were the zuchinni and the cucumbers, we didn't get enough rain and no matter how hard we watered, they never got happy.
-
We had great luck last year with acorn and butternut squash, tomatos, peppers zuchinni and cabbage. we didn't get a lot of rain so the cucumbers not so much. The lettuce went nuts, and it reseeded itself so we had two crops. I'll post some pictures later. I'd love to share our gardening experiences!

That looks very good Grub! How does this relate to say, shish kabob, which I like to make and serve on rice pilaf, but next time, I might try it on your bread. we use cubes of steak, mushrooms, onion pieces and cherry tomatos, sometimes summer squash.

Now Shmear This! ... what does shmear mean to you?
christine007 replied to a topic in Food Traditions & Culture
LOL We're going to do it our way, yes our way! I think of shmear as an extra large glop of whatever on bread, a cupcake, extra frosting, a big hunk of peanut butter on a cracker, but yes, most especially cream cheese! -
Lead us not into temptation ..what is your worst?
christine007 replied to a topic in Food Traditions & Culture
Anything pickled. Onions, mushrooms, cauliflower, olives. Any cheese on any cracker. With the pickled stuff on the side. Bacon, oh yeah. Slim Jims. -
Help: Side dishes for Wiener Schnitzel
christine007 replied to a topic in Elsewhere in Europe: Cooking & Baking
thin slices of cucumber marinated in olive oil/vinegar, salt pepper. that's what my Austrian cookbook says is traditional, alone with the plain boiled potatos mentioned upthread. happy eating! -
