  1. I sometimes boil and mash carrots with my spuds. Really good. And that casserole sounds awesome, Miss Amy, I'm not laughing, I'm drooling.
  2. Very interesting, you live in a really cool place, Flocko! I have a cookbook from the nineteen eightes with a recipe for fry bread, which, after cooking, is dipped in a mixture of bacon grease and syrup. Is that common in your area? I mean, in addition to using it for tacos. Sounds very good to me, how can you go wrong with bacon grease.
  3. Ann, that picture belongs in a frame.... Today, I made peirogies, fried onions and sour cream. Very rib-sticking.
  4. When you explain to your computer-less mom that you're going to make zuchinni fritters that Chuffi made, and your mom knows who Chuffi is. (true story) When you teach your entire family to roast califlower, and then make soup from said roast, only to find out someone beat you to it on page nine of the thread.

By far I have to say, Julia Child's creation of Geatau (spelling) of crepes, which is a wonder creation of crepes, layered with a cream/swiss cheese sauce, crepes, and matchstick pieces of broccoli, carrots and mushrooms, all layered in a butter dish and baked until the egg, cream and cheese mixture has set, and the vegetables are done. lovely, wonderful dish, but it takes the better part of a day to make, starting with the frying of the crepes, the chopping of the veggies, and the construction of the sauce. it's in her book, from Julia's kitchen, part two. what a wonderful dish. We've only ventured to make it twice. My second contribution would be a vegetable pizza, great at this time of year as all the summer produce comes into season this time of year. I was raised by a vegetarian mom, so this comes easy to me. Last year for thanksgiving, our main was a tart made of squash, onion, and blue cheese.
  7. Well, not a food they no longer serve, but yet... I totally remember the first time Burger King surfaced in our hood. I had to have been maybe eight? at that time. I remember so clearly the taste of a wonderful burger, fresh and honest, bursting the the taste of the very best cheese, onions, tomaTos and lettuce known to man. Sadly, the taste / and quality have suffered so much so that it is no longer what I remember experiencing for that first time..
  8. I adore beets and lima beans and canned tuna. I can't stand turkey. yuck. Love the thanksgiving sides, but hold the meat. no game, deer or otherwise. ocean fish only. spicy sausage I hate! and I hate garlic, unless there's just a whisper in the dish. cooked green peppers are nasty.
  9. I never remembing seeing a regional weather map like I saw on sunday morning, the entire U.S. is ninety or better! Whoa , global warming. I'm living on cottage cheese, tuna, slices of vegetables from mly garden, home pickled beets and hard boiled eggs. Keeping whole wheat pita bread in the house for easy sandwiches. and, of course, sweet ice tea, because this ohio girl is more than a little bit country. Have not found the courage to stand over my Webber grill in this heat.
  10. ann are you of English heritage? I ask because my english mom makes scones a lot. Sometimes we put strawberry jam right in the batter. Do you serve clotted cream with your sometimes? they are beatiful, btw, love the blackberries in them.

  12. Ann, I really chuckled when I saw you blogging this morning, I was just looking at your beautiful dishes in the Dinner thread, and I was thinking to myself what a great blog you could do! Really looking forward to sharing your life and cooking.
  13. I'm on board the same boat, Arne. When I fire up the smoker I hate to waste all that heat and smoke on just enough pork for the two of us. There is always plenty of extra pulled pork when I do butt. ← For that matter, I do the same thing when I fire up the Webber charcol grill, do extra burgers, dogs, chicken for the next day. Why go to all that trouble for one meal? nothing wrong with a breakfast of hamburgers. Also, it's just impossible for me to make small salads.. even when making a green tossed salad I just automatically grab my biggest bowl. Same with macaroni, poato salad, cole slaw, etc. Lucky for my, I have friends, family, neighbors, who enjoy my cooking.
  14. I pretty much do live on salad, especially in the summer. Growing up with a vegetarian mom has it's advantages, one of which, is a love of all salads. I'd pick mixed greens, raw broccoli, shredded cheddar, onions, raisins, walnuts and pears in blue cheese. Having said that, I still have a nostalgic fondness for jello salads of all kinds, especially the walnut/black cherry one. Cobb andCeasar are awesome too. so is taco salad. Wait, I guess I didn't really pick, did I?

    Pork Orgy

    A really nice sauce I make for pork includes vinegar, ginger, garlic, choppped onion and some apricot or peach perserves. I don't really measure, I start off with the jam in a pot on low heat, add enough vinegar to get it sweet/sour, and then add the other stuff to taste. simmer on a low heat and then brush on the meat that I'm baking in the oven. Serve with fried rice. My dad always made pork chops breaded in seasoned flour, fried, and served with stuffing, gravy, boiled potatos and kraut. I think the trick for cooking chops juicy is to use enough oil or fat in the pan, and lower the heat right after getting both sides nice and brown. Good luck, it sounds like you have some good eating coming up!

    Oxtail Soup

    Growing up with my mom from England, we ate oxtail soup all the time and it is very good. I'd suggest giving it more taste and body by adding some stew beef to the initial broth.
  17. Well, God bless and keep my Aunt Paddy. She was on a no salt diet. Notice, I didn't say low salt, I said NO salt. And, she thought we should be on it too. You haven't lived until you've eaten a slice of no salt bread, toasted, spread with no salt margarine, with a no salt soft boiled egg on the side. She made beef tongue one year, I ate it as a child, not knowing what it was. I still to this day don't know what she did to it, but I puked the whole night. She'd make cookies when we went camping, and my dad, bless him, would shout, "Dont' eat the cookies and go swimming,you'll sink!" She was the worst cook ever. We would argue over whoose turn it was to spend the weekend with her.
  18. wonderful blog! I too am following the basic diet plan, low carb, lean protein, etc, and I find I have a lot more energy and need less sleep. For me, it wasn't as much losing weight as it was staying at a healthy weight for my body. I love your kitchen, I have to admit, my kitchen would fit in yours three times over. Do you really feel you need a remodel?
  19. This is a wonderful thing you're doing. For food such as candy, cookies, crackers, and wet naps, etc, don't overlook the almighty dollar stores. They often have good prices on those items and many more too, if you look around.

  21. I am with you, Miriam. I'd rather stir and wait than get a mouthful of tepid soup. ← Oh, count me in! The big reason I never order soup when I'm out, it comes to the table lukewarm, no matter how I beg otherwise. Fear of lawsuits? I don't know, but I love to sit and stir my mug of soup and anticipate that first taste.

  24. Anna that IS cute! It reminds me of the ceramic dish I have for homemade baked beans, the handle on top of it is a piggy! Today's garage sale day here, I'm gearing up. Looking for some nice fry pans. I scored a microwave a few weeks ago (mine died) for twenty bucks.
  25. Hey Mizducky, I love to use the whole wheat pitas as "bowls" for my salads, it's awesome!
