Dude, you gotta have french fries. Skins on fries with plenty of ketchup. Maybe mini burgers too.

I was thinking England also. Jackal?

MizDucky, just wanted to say, you are the kindest, most wonderful person, and an inspiration to us all. I have a ninety two year old neighbor I bake for. You inspire me. -

Oh, those Scottish eggs are lovely! DROOL! I never had them with gravy, only mustard. -
I love, love! To saute a bunch of finely sliced mushrooms in oil and butter until they are nice and brown and crisp. Then I add fresh eggs, mixed with salt, pepper and a little milk, mixed up really well. turn down the heat and scramble, and at the last minute, add some finely grated swiss. Serve on toasted bread.

Ahh, Snowangel, me being outside of Cleveland, Oh, we are truly kindred spirits. I make BLT's using my first ripe tomato, and brought corn from our farmer's market, picked two hours before I ate it. I, like you, adore this time of year. The best dinner ever.

Howard Johnson's toaster muffins. They were thin, flat and square, and you toasted them in the toaster. Sold in the freezer section, they came in cornmeal and blueberry. They were so good, toasted crisp and spread with butter. My other earliest memory would be our constant English Chiristmas dinner of roast beef, oven browned potatos and parsnips, brussel sprouts , creamed onions and corn for the American wimps. Dessert was plum pudding or apple pie with Bird's custard sauce. Been eating this since I first got my teeth.

This year, I put in Rutgers and Mr.slicey. So far, I'm getting superior results, actually have one ready to be picked, and that's early for this climate. At least it's early in my experience. The plants are barely standing under the weight of the fruit, and this in a drought year! I'm pleased. My cherries are doing good too, I grew them from seed and got a ton of healthy plants. I"m going to do that again next year, but start them early, in the sunroom.

Just hugs and best wishes to all of you going through this. my best friend is doing this chemo right now, and I'm tempting her with foods.

I just stopped to ponder the American patty melt, swiss cheese, fried onions on grilled rye bread.. damn, that messed up my choice!
-
Glorified rice, get outta my head! That's my burger too.
-
I roll them in peanut butter and birdseed in the winter. Hang them from the tree.

All these ideas sound good. I also forgot, they're an excellent addition to vegetarian chili. Give it a nice, bland balance to the heat.

Hee, I'm ascared of my pumpkins this year. For Zucchini, I love to split them lenghtwise and stuff them. Here's some that have been really tasty Tomatos, onions, garlic, chopped, sauteed briefly in a little oil, throw in some cooked sausage and toss. Add the guts you scooped out of the zucchini, and bake in a moderate oven until the zukes are soft. You can throw some mozzaralla on the top too, let it melt. Also, white and wild rice, cooked in broth, with onions and mushrooms. stuff and cook as above. Hope these help.

Well, wrap those pups up and freeze them! They will keep forever if properly wrapped and frozen. Later have a fondue and bring them out to be dipped in cheesey goodness.

Hi Randi! Ok, I've been lurking and I wanted to say what a nice job you're doing with the meals, and I can really see how this is a true challenge, what with coming up with different foods to serve to please a crowd, and I think you have a lot of imagination and creativity! I'm really enjoying seeing your journey here. As for pleasing the seniors, I also wanted to reassure you that this is no easy task, as my mother who's pushing for eighty (and doesn't have a computer so I can talk about her), drives me nuts- NOTHING is ever right. She didn't use to be a complainer, and I'm really relating it to her advancing age, and I wanted to say that because I'm pretty much daily sucking it up and dealing with her, that you shouldn't take the complaints to heart. It's plain to see you're going a beautiful job and I know the seniors are grateful to you, whether they say it or not. And yes, if you'd served wheat bread, someone would have been unhappy. Like I said, don't take it to heart- my mother bitches if the stamps she buys are flags and not flowers or butterflies. And flips if a book is taken back to the library one day late- see, that's what I'm talking about! But thanks again for letting us into your very interesting (and tasty) world!

The three greatest potato dishes of all time
christine007 replied to a topic in Food Traditions & Culture
"Good" french fries. A huge baked potato with butter, salt and pepper. Salad on the side. My potato gratin, simple yet luxorious. thin, thin sliced potatos, milk, butter, flour, salt and pepper and a few tablespoons of finely grated onion. Cooked long and slow in a covered dish. Yum. -
To Chris from another Chris: Thank you for sharing this story. I was also born in this era, and I'm also a survivor of a loved ones suicide, a story I rarely, if ever, share, but your candor has moved me so. I still, almost forty years later, remember my first bite of Life cereal and being astonished at how good it was. There is such a strong connection in all of us between are present needs for comfort, and the foods of our childhood. again, thank you.

Percyn, you have the luckiest kitty on the planet! I brought an amazing amount of really good cherry tomatos, so we had BLTS, which I did not share with my cat, Linus.
-
Prawncrackers, hate to dissapoint you, but that looks delish, and I'd eat that anyday, I love burnt cheese.
-
A salad. mixed greens, chopped onions, the thinly sliced beef, blue cheese, tomatos and garlic croutons. yum.

Sometimes, the combination of being a single parent of a special needs child and an entire yard/house to take care of leaves me no time to cook, let alone sit and eat. So it's off to BK- Whopper with cheese, extra mayo, hold the fries. Eaten on the road (Extra credit, I drive a stick shift) and groaning with the hot, salty, cheesey greasy pleasure of the experience. This is my once a month. Taco bell, not so often, but I've been known to polish of ten tacos. and a diet coke, naturally.
