  1. Haha, yea right! I went to Noodle Bar one night, maybe a year after it opened, Chang was on the station in front of us. I said something like “Everything was great, incredible flavors. This is your place, right?” Chang looks up, with the straightest face, and says “no” and never looks up again. That was my Chang conversation. I’m positive yours with Colicchio was just a tad more interesting. Though, the Chang "denial" (as I call it) always makes for a good laugh. (Can I get a Ko reservation now, pls?)
  2. He was sitting at the bar after dinner the night I went to Tom:Tuesday Dinner. We had a nice long chat. (Not about his TV show, which I've never seen.) Totally approachable. The guy radiates authority, BTW. He just seems like he should be running a top kitchen. ← Would love to see the cliff notes of that conversation. Any harmless tidbits you care to share?
  3. I wonder (now that he’s more famous than ever) how approachable Colicchio is. Has anyone had any recent interaction? Like if I mozied over and said we really love the show but this year’s contestants kind of sucked (except for Fabio and not for his cooking), would he engage me?
  4. Isn't she precious? And tasty too. (We braised her overnight) Yeah, was time to change pics. I mean how many times can you look at Bush raising a freshly caught bass whilst Katrina victims wade through debris behind him?
  5. I should be flogged for trusting menupgs. Weren’t they on top of closings? (Who could blame them with the economy?). Anyway, yea, Spanks is finito. But still, don’t go to Virgils. You’ll be spitting out that dry rub (while thinking about this post) and wishing you made baby steps to Daisy’s or Hill Country. It's is an easy bus ride down Brdwy or 7th Ave. Hire a bicycle cab! Rent a Segway! Don’t settle for crap q!
  6. I think Virgil’s dry rub (and dry ribs) are nasty. Had a couple surprisingly good experiences at Spanky’s (43rd 6th/7th) though. Tender and nicely smoked buffalo short ribs and brisket. Who knew? I mean if you’re stuck around there I’d give it shot. Though any bbq lover on here will tell you to throw your slow friend in a cab (or the cross town M42 bus) or drag them to Daisy May’s for the real deal (46th and 11th). Whatever you do, don’t come back here saying you ended up at Dallas BBQ. Unforgivable!
  7. From WD-50: smoked eel, blood orange, radish, chicken skin. As delicious as it was beautiful. http://www.wd-50.com/imagewins_food/imagewin15.html . And the foie w/quince and mole lentils. http://www.flickr.com/photos/hellokitty893112/2144966801/
  8. If he brings a copy of Larry's pic there can be no issue http://larrylee.org/archives/2006/10/new_yeah_shangh.html
  9. No matter how long they’re squatting you’re taking a pretty big chance at ruining a perfectly good experience by asking any table to get up. The comp drink at the bar is often effective but can backfire esp if cash isn’t an issue. Better to risk pissing diners off on the way in than out. (Of course this is all trivial stuff : )
  10. I've been and it's very good (esp for the location). Reminded me of Gotham. Lots of impressive componenets on the plate but nothing you haven't experienced before (except for the pretty views on the Hudson). More of a formal/special occassion spot though. The venison w/figs and foie was exceptional. And I didn't see it but from this link looks like he spanked Flay. Anyone see it? http://www.lohud.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article...1277/CUSTOM0401
  11. I heard the Bite Club chef makes some of the best pizza in the world. Any plans to showcase this special talent?
  12. Since you'll be in and around the LES and mentioned pizza, I suggest the real (original) Rays on Prince and Elizabeth for a white and/or regular slice. Crispy perfection. And I second (or third) the Fatty Crab suggestion. Different, unique, delicious. Here's an old cheap eats thread. Most of these places are still around and worthy of consideration. http://forums.egullet.org/index.php?showtopic=80287&hl=
  13. No, you had it right. Remember that pic, Larry Lee posted in the Midtown Lunch thread? http://larrylee.org/archives/2006/10/new_yeah_shangh.html
  14. Yes, I believe so. - Had a thick, even layer of fat across the top about 1/2 inch thick.
  15. Nah, they're different, atleast on the Green Bo menu: Tong Po Pork (with 4 buns) 8.95 Pork Shoulder In Brown Sauce 11.95
  16. That's a great idea! I think you would easily find people willing to go. And well put Saydee....
  17. Just echoing Claudio...... I too was really impressed and touched by this eppisode. My ignorant self had no idea that conditions were as such. As if completely forgotten by FEMA and/or whatever govt assitance/agencies responsible for aid/rebuilding. Sad state of affairs to say the least. Really makes you want to head over and inject some cash into the economy. I gotta hand it to Tony for reaching out to Emeril and Emeril for accepting. Both realizing that personal b.s. is so trivial when compared to providing insight into this sad situation.
  18. Without straying too much from topic I took your advice and had the pork shoulder at New Green Bo last night and my paradigm has been shifted. It was excellent. Texture, flavor and portion size. ← And if you stray across the street Yeah Shanghai does a very good version too. Even better Shanghai Cafe. (Both over braised baby bok-choy if I remember correctly).
  19. Just a thought re Little Owl; I agree the food is really good for what it is but there's nothing romantic about it. It's bare bones, cramped and can get loud. If the romance factor isn't so important (and that's not to say these aren't romantic) you might consider Fatty Crab, Tia Pol and Degustation for innovative/fusiony Malay, tapas, and Spanish-French. (I've been out of the country for 6 months so take these with a grain.... )
  20. Very much enjoyed last night’s get together. So nice to catch up with egr’s (esp after 6 months in Asia with no American bbq at our disposition). Some things better than others at HC. The brisket is incredibly juicy (as many have noted) and laden with webby and solid layers of fat. It is delicious but I found myself doing more trimming than I would have liked. And is it bbq? It so wet it seems more like pot roast. Not to take away from the overall satisfaction. It was damn good. The beef and pork ribs were massive. Both pretty good, perfect crispness, right amount of seasoning, smoke and fat. The pork a bit too salty and beef slightly over cooked but both very edible. I agree with Nathan on the can hen. It was an excellent quality bird and very moist. Perfectly prepared. Also the spicy sausage (not spicy at all) was complex, smokey and much leaner than I would’ve guessed. Slightly over-priced but well worth it. But the true stars were the sides. Green bean casserole, Corn pudding, potato salad, and most of all baked beans. It is apparent there is much attention given to them unlike many other places. There is one real annoying thing about HC and that is waiting on an often lengthy line to pay your check. -Stuffed and about to enter a food coma, its the last thing you have patience for. Would def return to this place though.
  21. Went on the 4th with a bunch of EG'rs. I've had their que a couple times and wasn't wowed infact I found the dry rubs well, too dry and lacking in flavor (as I did this time as well). However the the flintstone sized sticky (beef) rib we shared was simply fantastic. Sweet, delicate char and pure fork-cut succulence to the bone....really amazing. The Carolina pulled pork was pulled perfectly.....not too much fat or overwhelmed by mustard. Sides were fine, cheddar corn and beans with ends. Also sweet pot mash and bouron peaches but we all know they belong in the dessert category. Looking frwd to a repeat visit when we get back from Asia in 6 mos.......leaving in 6hrs......see you all soon!
  22. Nothing to do with buying wholesale fish but if its a bust (and you're already there) you could chk out the bbq dude Meehan wrote up a couple months ago, Mo Gridder (and let us know if its worth the trek) http://events.nytimes.com/2007/01/24/dinin...html?ref=dining
  23. Don't forget 5 Front. Very good modern American and a cute date spot esp with the garden. Had a couple nice dinners there a couple yrs ago http://www.menupages.com/restaurantdetails...d=0&cuisineid=0
  24. Gennaro does some pretty good Italian http://www.menupages.com/restaurantdetails...14&cuisineid=35
  25. The crabs drive up the chk avg pretty good. Are they worth the price, work and mess? I haven't tried them. But they're like double the price of the avg entree/noodle dish. It's easy to get out with a beer, app and entree for under $40pp. An incredible deal for the execution and ingredient quality. I put FC in the Ssam category when I think of the "haute cuisine cheap" discussion
