  1. I was just reading a review of this new restaurant and was wondering if anyone here had any experience with it. Where is Smithville anyway? Here is the piece I was reading.
  2. Because a LOT of those folks from Atlanta, B'ham, Montgomery, etc know of and have eaten at the original Camellia Grill. Since the demise of most of the old line Destin breakfast places, they will be lining up. Even in the winter when you have to hide the sweet and low packets from the snowbirds. And there is nothing wrong with a decent burger. Yes, people eat a lot of seafood there but they eat a lot of other things. I used to live there and there are times, you just want a burger.
  3. I have been busy this week trying to get caught up with the new restaurants in Tulsa. Lava Noshery is on Peoria where Table Ten used to be. I had an excellent lunch there this week. Lucky's on 15th where Camarelli's used to be. I do not miss Camarellis, Luckys is still working on refining their menu and what they have now is pretty good. The newest place, KEO, on S Peoria in the Center 1 is our first upscale Asian dining experience. I had an excellent dinner here tonight. Thank goodness, I finally have somewhere to go besides PF Changs. The flavors and the ingredients were fresh and well composed. I also saw a new bbq place to check out. Oklahoma Style BBQ up on N Harvard is on my list.
  4. My grandfather grew up with Capt'n Nick Maltezos who owned the Florida Girl party fishing boat. We would go play on the point in the late 50s when there was nothing there. There was still nothing there in the late 60's when we would skip school and head to Panama City Beach for the day. If we went to Navarre or Ft Walton we ran the risk of getting caught by the truant officers. I did live there in the late 80s and early 90s when it exploded with growth. This was pre 4 lane between Destin and Sandestin when it took an hour to drive the 10 miles between the two. Now, with 4 to 6 lanes, it takes over 2 hours to drive between the two on a holiday weekend. PLus, Destin and south Walton County is THE Upscale resort area on the entire upper Gulf Coast. Do you realize how much money there is in Destin and South Walton? It has changed sooo much in the 10 years since I moved away. And the local population has improved to the point that the locals who eat out will support such restaurants.
  5. Soooo many people from New Orleans have beach houses in Destin. I remember waiting on all of the Brennans at one time or another when I worked at Kitchenique when it was at Shoreline Village Mall. A guess would be sort of a combination of both your premises. Plus, do you realize how many ex-pat Louisianans live over on the beach? Plus, all those tourists from Atlanta, Birmingham and Cleveland can dine at places they have heard of without going over to the city. As to the Disney in Destin. It was considered. At one time in the late 80s the Disney jet was spotted on a regular basis at the Destin Airport. Rumor was the Peter Bos was trying to unload Sandestin on them. I love Destin, it is so close to home and I love the city. Now I am homesick for the rest of the day.
  6. Don't - they open, close and move almost constantly! I'm sure you'll be sharing new-found treasures with us before we know it. ← Hush. Speak not blasphemy. We don't even have a Trader's Joe yet... please let us not lose what precious little we have. Speaking of... with the merger of WF and WO - does anyone know whether our local WO will still be operating as such, or if we get the lucky break of getting two new WF? u.e. ← I am so afraid that they are going to close our only W.O. because of the liquor laws of Okieland. We do not fit the profile the WF demands.
  7. My inagural restaurant week meal was lunch at Local Table, a relatively new comer from one of our local chefs. My lunch was a nice homemake corn chowder, a steak sandwich which was a tender slice of ribeye on baguette with piping hot french fries on the side. Dessert was fresh strawberry shortcake, fresh strawberries, real not overly sweet whipped cream and homemade shortcake biscuits. For $12.95, well worth the money and the time. Now, where do I go next. Being Sunday night, not a lot of places are open. Maybe McGills up on Lake Skiatook, or to get away from the specials, I noticed a new place open in the Center 1 comlex called KEO. I know nothing about it. That sounds like the challenge.
  8. goodie, two places to check out when I go to San Angelo for the National Ceramics Competition this next spring. How far is Abilene from Brownwood? I have to go there for a wedding sooner. edited to add, how disgusting, I think I have lived in Okieland tooooooo long
  9. From the Spot in todays Tulsa World. After years of having to go to Dallas or to Kansas City to enjoy a restaurant week, we finally get one here. It isn't much, but it is a beginning. Flemings and the Melting Pot are the only two I have never eaten at. But that will not stop me.
  10. Judy showed me where to go to get sausages, Krizman's in the Strawberry Hill section of KCK.
  11. earlier this summer I was driving down to Ada, OK and when passing through Prague and there was a couple of koloache bakeries. This is off I-10 kind of close to OKC.
  12. Here is Kansas CIty bbq in the eyes of a Chicago writer
  13. Here is a link from the NYT that reflects the graciousness and what a great Southern Lady Leah Chase is. President Bush was there for dinner last night and John Folse was helping in the kitchen. It does say near the end of the piece that she expects to be open in about 2 weeks for the public.
  14. From a good friend, I trust his tastes. ISO: 1. Nice restaurant to celebrate mother's birthday. She's turning 60, so South Beach "sceney" restaurants and clubs would not be appropriate. Ritz Carlton in Coconut Grove has an amazing Sunday Brunch. Talula in a quiet area of South Beach also has amazing food, husband & wife team run it & the service has always been top notch when I have been there. 2. Any other must dine restaurants in Miami (more for my own dining adventures). My familiarity with the Miami restaurant scene is sorely lacking. The only ones I know are probably outdated ( e.g. Norman's) and Ortanique (?). Michy's has already been on my radar for far too long, so one dinner will be there. I've been reading up on other recent reports on this site, but would love further input. Michy's for sure. Evolution at the Ritz Carlton South Beach. The Grill at The Setai Hotel. Vic's at Hotel Victor & Table 8. 3. Any suggestions on restaurants for my parents as they make their way down the Keys to Key West? They'll probably spend a good 5 days heading out and back, with overnight stays in the Keys. They love good food, but don't necessarily want fancy - just good and local (though not divey). Particularly, we have all be craving conch salad that we enjoy in the Bahamas (fresh from the dive) when my family vacationed down there in my childhood (before the cruise ships invaded). Little Palm Island 4. Nice hotel recommendations in Miami. My mom is considering the Four Seasons, but I'm figuring that there must be some comparably priced hotels that might also be of interest. The Setai South Beach or Hotel Victor on Ocean Drive both are amazing hotels with really great vibes & have really good on site restaurants. If you must stay downtown an alternative to the Four Seasons is the Mandarin or the Conrad. 5. Nice hotel recommendations in the Keys.
  15. what do you think about Karu + Y, is that the right name?
  16. What is the name of the El Bulli inspired restaurant, I am guessing it is up on Biscayne? I remember reading about it from posting by the chef. But I guess because it isn't on the beach it does not get all that much press. edited to add - I remember it was not in a great neighborhood and they spent a ton of money getting it open.
  17. How were the black eyed peas? I love black eyed peas. And i tend to over sprinkle the pepper vinegar sauce from my greens onto my peas.
  18. And some of the rest of are also glad to hear this news. I trusted his reviews mostly. Only once in a while did I ever disagree with his impressions of a restaurant.

    Mixing bowls

16 quarts, that is 4 gallons, that is pretty big. Almost a 5 gallon plastic bucket. What are they making? Are they a commercial bakery? I have never seen a glass bowl that large unless it is one of those very special things created by a glass artist and worth a ton of money.

    Tampa

I have great memories of the Mullet Inn on the Courtney Campbell Causeway. I lived there so long ago that the Kapok Tree Inn was considered a great place. And the little cafe on the corner of the Columbia Restaurant, going there for a real cuban sandwich and a bowl of spanish bean soup for a study break. Of couse the best cuban came from the Silver Ring. And Las Novidades was the best Cuban restaurant in town. And Cafe Pepe on Kennedy had the best Sangria. And the late night ads for the Valencia Garden, Salud and Happy Day #(however many times the ad had run), just about the time we had the serious munchies and close to the time the Right Reverend Adel Moncrief did the signoff. (remember when tv was not 24 hours) omg. edited to add, remember the hippie vegie place in Temple Terrace? I think that was the first time I ever had brown rice.
  21. From just perusing this thread, one who didn't know better would think that all everyone ate was roasted cauliflower with Jayme's Salsa, and both are the bomb.
  22. I picked up a copy at Borders this past weekend and have cooked from it. It has been a LONG time since I was so inspired by a Gourmet issue. For dinner tonight, I am making the grilled fish tacos. I made the pork and pozole stew starting with some of Rancho's pozole that I cooked to start with. And i served it with all the stuff the recipe called for. Pretty good. Wouldn't it be nice if all the issues were as accessable as this one has been. And so beautiful. I will continue to pick up selected issues at the market instead of subscribing.
  23. When I buy "heirloom" tomatoes, I make it a point to know my grower. I do not buy them at the local Wild Oats. They just aren't the same flavor. Now last summer we had a bad tomato year here in northwest Oklahoma. And it was HOT and DRY. Everyone at the farmers market had a bad tomato year just as we did here at the house. This year is different. A much better year all around. The cracking problem, heck, those are the ones we eat first. Or I make something with. As for the pretty tomatoes, having grown a bunch, I know that the pretty ones do not always taste as good as they look. I do not throw out those uglies, everything gets used. Our tomato season started July 4th weekend so we are getting to the back side of our harvest. And the melons, we have been having a great year so far for melons. Great flavors.
  24. Foodman gave me one of my favorite recipes, “Oil Preserved Stuffed Chilies” and now is the time for me to plan on making some more. I did have a jar get lost in the back of the fridge, and about a year later I pulled it out. The flavor was delicious, the peppers had mellowed.
  25. I add just a bit, basically to taste, to unsweetened iced tea just to give a hint of flavor and a hint of sweetness. Then after I pour over ice in my glass, I add toasted pine nuts. I find this very refreshing and tasty. And a real break from southern style iced tea.
