  1. Trip to Cocoa, Florida for basketball - 4:00 a.m. - starving - no hotel room (hotel overbooked, had to sleep in minivan until next day - stopped at a chain that serves breakfast all day - should have turned around when there were frogs stuck to the doors and windows, but after the day we had, we needed fuel - should have turned around when we saw the waitress (big hair, cigarette in mouth while she talked and took our order) and the cook - but after the day we had we didn't care - WE DID TURN AROUND when the waffles we were dreaming of came with fly syrup - guess that's what the frogs were looking at.
  2. Edys Caramel Ice Cream - slow churned and pretzel rods. Didn't need a spoon, just shoveled the ice cream into my mouth using the pretzel rods. Yum.
  3. Daniel - when the owner e-mailed me, he said it would be another 6-8 weeks before their kitchen opened. That was Sept. 15th - so I'm thinking sometime next month they should be open for business.
  4. I have a question - my Mother has recently shared her recipe for applesauce with me and I made it for the 1st time last weekend. I do not have a pressure canner or any canner for that matter - but I would love to make lots of applesauce and store it to use all winter. Can I just put it in mason jars and store it in the freezer or in some other storage container. If not, is there some other way I can make a few jars to keep for a few weeks at least. Please forgive my canning ignorance - and thanks for any advice. Teresa

    Using Up the Apples

My favorite is the Pink Lady - although I am going to look for Honeycrisps to try now.
  6. [i caught the tail (no pun intended) end of that Bobby Flay special last night and saw that one of the competitors had a banner that said they were from Linden, is this the crew from the Front Street Smokehouse. ←
  7. I seem to have answered my own question - there kitchen will not be officially ready and open for 6 to 8 weeks, but they will be having a "tasting" of sorts on the 23rd. Here is an e-mail I received from the owners. Maybe some of the egullet BBQ lovers would be interested in checking this out - especially if they're giving out samples of BBQ. 8. I saw these guys last night on the Food Network - Memphis in May with Bobby Flay (or something like that) - they were competitors. Wondering if anybody has been here or knows anything about them - their website says that they serve Memphis Style BBQ but the kitchen is a work in progress, but I saw somewhere that they were serving lunch. No answer when I called the # today around 11. Just curious if anybody has any info. Website P.S. Daniel - this is in your territory when you're in Jersey - maybe you can check it out next time you're in the area. Edited to add that I see they won a competition in PA on 8/27 - see here
  9. Daniel - what funny and beautiful pictures and stories from your trip. I mentioned in a response to your Majestic post over in the Elizabeth/Lunch thread that I was anxiously awaiting this thread - and you did not disappoint. The food looks so good I want to reach right into my monitor - and your time in Mexico made me laugh (only b/c you made it out safely). Can't wait for the rest of the trip. Thanks again for taking us all along for the ride. P.S. How big is the trunk of a Seabring - if you leave from the East Coast instead of Vegas, maybe I can stow away in the trunk.
  10. Come on Daniel - give us some more. You mentioned that you are going away tomorrow, don't leave us hanging.
  11. Last weekend my nephew got married at my sister's house. They confirmed 200 with the caterer, but only 185 rsvpd. We never would have considered calling the caterer at the last minute to change the # down - perhaps up if more people rsvpd, but never down. The extra food was packed up (very easy since the wedding was at her home) - and the following day my sister called several of our family members to come by and pick up some food - and she also had plenty to feed her house guests.
  12. Just adding my two cents - with eggs. My Grandmother was from Winston-Salem, NC and my Grandfather from Georgia, near Savanah. I, like my mother and her mother make potato salad with preferably yukon gold or some other whiteish potato (as opposed to a baking potato), boiled and then peeled and diced as soon as they are cool enough to handle. Add in mayo - NOT MIRACLE WHIP - probably 6-8 hard boiled eggs for 5 pounds of potatoes, sweet relish or sweet gherkins cut finely or maybe even just pickle juice, onion, cut finely, s&p, a touch of mustard - and maybe even a sprinkle of sugar or a dash of vinegar depending on the taste of the potatoes themselves (some need sweetning while others need a certain vinegary taste) - mixed carefully so as not to have mashed potato salad - and in the fridge until time to eat.
  13. Any chance you could share the recipe and instructions for peach empanadas or point me in the right direction? Just the thought of it is making my mouth water.
  14. Daniel, I think you are spending a little too much time in my hometown. But in honor of you knowing the language, I am going to check out Chez Maguy either tomorrow or Friday and will report back. Actually, my kids have friends who can translate for me, so I'll have a little advantage with the language. I know from other posts that you don't always work in E'town and also that you have another road trip coming up as well as a trip to China - so whenever you do get something exciting for lunch here, please continue to post, and in the mean time, I will continue to await your road trip threads. Teresa
  15. Appalachian - in my mind it tastes different (and better) and I think the fact that it comes in a crystal clear plastic bottle instead of a cloudy one helps with this theory.
  16. Yes - Mario's, don't know how I couldn't remember that. And no, I have not tried Chicks Seafood, but I have a few days off this week so I may make my way down there. I am very surprised by your pictures from Chez Maguy. Knowing the building I would never expect such good looking food to come out of there. I may give the a try. Thanks for the pictures.
  17. I think it might be distantly related to the jerk, but it is definetly spicy and very good. I don't know if there are many e-gulleters in Elizabeth, but actually this thread is what brought me to Egullet, so it is my favorite. I grew up and still live there. I kow you mentioned looking for Spanish food - my new favorite is Manny's on Frelinghuysen Ave., but that may be a little far for you. There is a great cuban restaurant on Elizabeth Ave - forget the name but I will check and post later. Thinking right near you, there is a pizza place on 3rd Street two blocks after Bond St. on the left, they have the best BBQ Chicken Pizza around. As you probably already know, the neighborhood you are in aint the greatest, but after seeing you sitting on your trunk eating BBQ in Chicago was it at 1:00 a.m. - I see such things won't stop you in your quest. Oh, one more recommendation sort of near Shack's - there is a greek guy who has this little diner on Jefferson Ave. (in between East Jersey St. and Elizabeth Ave.), most days he him or his wife are outside with a cart with some of the best shiskabob - oh boy are they good and cheap.
  18. Well, lets see - their fish is very good - and they give you a lot of it. I also like their spicy chopped bbq chicken - I think they call it Jamaican chopped chicken or something like that. If you wanted your ribs spicy - this dish may be right up your alley. As for sides, my son is a candied yam fanatic and he gets that every time, and I mean double yams. They are consistently good. Their collards are also good, only minor complaint is they don't cut them small enough which means the leaves are pretty big. Oh, and my son's other recommendation is their watermelon lemonade, although I think its either a love it or hate it type of thing. Only thing I would steer clear of is their peach cobbler/sweet potatoe pie, everything else - full speed ahead. So glad you liked it. From your previous threads it looks like you have sampled alot of stuff in E'town, but let me know if you need any other recommendations. Oh yeah - the lady at the counter is extremely friendly isn't she. Very big on customer service, equally with newbies and regulars.
  19. Are you asking for a cookbook on Spanish food or on Latin American food? ← I apologize - you are right Latin American Food. Got any ideas?
  20. Can anyone recommend a Spanish food cookbook, with recipes for things like empanadas, etc. more Columbia or Dominican Republic or Puerto Rican type recipes.
  21. Hi Daniel, Is this the one on the corner of 2nd and Bond - the pictures look good. I hope one of the others that is on your list is Shack's on East Grand St. - their food is very good. If you try it, please post about it. And good luck on your upcoming trip. I enjoy your posts about your travels so much.
  22. There are so many - bread pudding, applesauce, salmon cakes, turkey hash, ham and beans, sweet potatoe pie, beef stew, cornbread. How lucky am I to live next door to her still so my kids (and me) can enjoy her food all the time.
  23. Maybe the thread you are referring to is in the Special Occassions Forum - Pay Hommage to Your Mother, Her Culinary Skills (I don't know how to link other threads)
