  2. Sure And Twizzlers cherry licorice work well too. And then there's peanut butter play dough - equal parts uncooked oatmeal, dry milk, peanut butter and honey. Not too bad for the kiddos. Therese
  3. Sadly, Shake a Pudding goes the way of the dinosaurs, while Suddenly Salad defies Darwin, and lives on. -Therese
  4. I think you're on to something here. Somewhere along the way, the chocolate in M&M's changed. I'm thinking around the early 70's?? I remember saving up dimes and nickles and buying a big pound bag of them when I was a kid and thinking "YUCK, something is different" -therese
  5. When I was a kid, I thought the ultimate in adult party eats equaled one of those green slushy whiskey sours (Made with the fancy green maraschino cherries ) and a tin of smoked oysters mmmm) That, and maybe some cheese stuck on a toothpick like "T.O.F." mentioned, just screams air hockey and shag carpeting to me. -therese
  6. Starving... nothing at desk... dry Cremora.... sugar... oh gawd... Guess it's Cremora and sugar. Hmmmm that month old strawberry Brummel and Brown and frozen bagel are starting to sound like a feast. -therese
  7. What a heavenly test. Who cares if it's not scientific... it's BACON for crying out loud. Carry on soldiers. Must have hot slaw…now. -therese
  8. Resistance is futile - I love Smarties. As a kid, my friends and I would pretend they were pills. Make you all better. I noticed the candy store is selling candy cigs again! haha! Nobody wants to be non-P.C., so I'm sure they won't make it into the trick or treat bags. Why is the white part on candy corn the best? hmmmmmm -therese, m.d. (take two white smarties and call me in the morning.)
  9. Exactly!! Some white chocolate covered pretzels or reeeeally good milk chocolate almond bark A good book maybe a shot of tequila and leave me the hell alone! -therese

  11. Chili spaghetti. Fun to make, because you can vary the ingredients and toppings to your mood. Makes the house smell like heaven. I usually have all the ingredients on hand and the end result is always sooo comforting. -therese
  12. Wanted something sweet, made bananas Foster. Discovered we had no vanilla ice-cream - rats. Still good. -therese
  13. OH, don’t even get me started on raisins in my rice pudding. It’s wrong I tells ya! All that nice, rich, creamy goodness adulterated by little, brown, slimy blobs. Kimmy for president!! --therese
  14. Braunschweiger strange? nah. But then I'm from Cincinnati and I'm german. (With onions on rye please! Big dark beer on the side). I get the strangest craving for lemons with salt on them. I also get that weird cornedbeef craving now and then; it must be a sodium thing. --therese
  15. Cool! :) I did a global search with the word "smoking" and got 2500 hits. Is there any chance you can direct me to the thread of which you speak? Speaking of cheffing... isn't there a salve you can get for that? ;) smoking chefs Ask and yee shall receive. -t
  16. I'm seeing a lot of bland foods. Funny, when I'm in pain, be it emotional or physical, I take comfort from spicy food. Indian, Thai - anything that inflicts pain. The pain from peppers distracts me. If you see me veging out in front of the tube with a bowl of those little pickled jalapeno slices, it must be BAD. --therese
  17. oooh, The Rat Pack. Now that'd be fun. -therese
  18. This sounds wonderful! Thanks for posting it. I've got to try this. -therese
  19. Little Debbie snack cakes. Blech! Too many things I don't recognize in the ingredient list. How can they do that to flour, butter, sugar and eggs?! It's a travesty I tells ya. -therese
  20. Well that does it, I’m going to have to get there. I’ve only been there one time, but remember being dumb struck by the petit fours, beautiful and delicate. And this is a bit off topic but, Pomi's in Clifton has, in my humble opinion, the most amazing pizza and lasagna. Their garlic bread can reduce me to tears. -therese
  21. I'll most likely try the focaccia this weekend. I have a tried and true recipe I use, so it will be fun to see how this compares. We like our focaccia with garlic infused olive oil, rosemary, prosciutto, calamatas and parm. mmmm. BTW, I think all the tarts turned out great looking! And the twiced baked brioche pics lovely. I'm really enjoying seeing all the pictures. --therese
  22. Plax, I agree it was a bit of work. Honestly, when I read your post I thought, "What's to it? Ya cut up a couple apples." I was wrong. Things I'd do differently: I wouldn't buy the bagged apples. The bagged apples were so much smaller; it made a challenging project more difficult. I ended up slightly short on my compote. I started with almost twice as many as she recommended but my apples were just so puny. I'd also buy a decent mandolin. My cheapo mandolin gave me fits. Lesson learned. I'd roll out plenty of pie dough so I wasn't piecing it together! argh. Yes, I'm complaining but I did have fun making it. And it tastes great. --therese
  23. Gosh, I know I had a good apple fritter at one of those pick-your-own-apples places just north of Cincy... but that was a few years ago so who knows if it is still there, plus it might just be a Fall thing. I grew up on the East Side, but being from a big Catholic family, I had to leave the city because I was related to EVERYONE! Very funny! There are some beautiful apple orchards along the river near Hebron KY. They used to sell wonderful fresh apple fritters in the fall but stopped a couple years ago. You could also pick your own apples. I forget the exact price, but I think it was something like a half bushel for $8.00. They don't do it anymore because of insurance problems. Big bummer.
  24. Oven frenzy, what side of town did you live on, east or west? As I'm sure you remember, there's only one right answer... the side I'M FROM. You'll be glad to know the battle continues. I live within a mile of a Servatti's and a Busken's on the WEST SIDE and although I admit they are wonderful, I'm STILL going to whine. I had a big, fat, ugly, apple fritter from an Amish run bakery up near Akron. It was the most wonderful, warm, crispy, chewy, sweet, appley, yummy thing I've had in ages. I haven't been able to find a decent apple fritter in cincy, and I KNOW they should be here. Does anyone know of a place? I can't say I've visited them, but we do have quiet a few micro-breweries in the over-the-rhine area and across the river in Covington. Been meaning to hit the Hofbrau House, for kicks. And for what it’s worth, I couldn’t live without Skyline chili. -therese
  25. Some one mentioned Saga earlier, it's pretty good and easy to find. Castello (Denmark) makes a soft blue that has a butter like quality. It is the smoothest blue I’ve found. It claims to be triple-cream; not sure what that means exactly. OMG so good. Nibbled on crackers or stuffed in a big fat burger. mmmmm. Great thread! --therese
