  1. Lovely website and the recipe sounds fabulous, but what kind of zucchini do you have in France? Your squash flowers are much bigger than mine. I am using an Italian vareity of seed, but I would love to know what is being used where you are from.
  2. I've had it at Scarpone in the Monteverde Vecchio neighborhood (and it was pretty great). ← Scarpone sounds great! We are taking our ten year old to Rome in November. Any recs for restaurants and great food shopping would be appreciated! Thanks!
  3. I like them stuffed with cheese and fried, but I also make squash blossom rissotto, souffles and spaghetti carbonara with fresh shredded squash blossoms.
  4. That looks beautiful! Does anyone in Rome serve this? I LOVE lemon!
  5. We are taking our ten year old son to Rome for nine days this Thanksgiving. My son is a good eater and is pretty game to try just about anything (he has not tried brains, but he loves liver and kidneys). We would like some recs for good, not too expensive, authentic places. We could splurge one night for something fabulous. Also, we are renting an apartment, so some good markets would be welcome too since I plan on cooking a couple of nights. Also, is Da Gigetto (sp?) still fabulous in Trastevere? It was twenty years ago. Thanks!
  6. I confess to collecting solid fats (but I have just regular olive oil--no single estate, vintage nonsense). I do have goose drippings from last Christmas and duck fat preserved in my fridge. I have shown them to other people, and as a special treat, I'll fry my morning eggs in them.
  7. I like Fiesta Mexicana at Broadway and Argyle--go for the whole grilled red snapper in green garlic sauce and they have rockin' margaritas. After dinner, you can catch some jazz at the Green Mill.
  8. Well, include the Thirsty Whale's clams in your tee-shirt shopping expedition. You will not be disappointed. Thurston's is good, but no one does better clams than the Whale.
  9. I would also recommend The Thirsty Whale (the best fried clams evah!) and Gaylan's Galley (Lobster stew, stemed mussels and indian pudding), both in Bar Harbor, and The Docksider (but the Northeast Harbor location, not the Bar Harbor one). And if you have some time, take the mail boat to Little Cranberry and eat at the dock restaurant--great big fat lobster rolls! Also, the Burning Tree in Otter Creek is very good, and the Seaside Diner in Seal Harbor (it's the little shack on the town pier, run by Stevie Smith, the King of the Bad Fishermen). The menu at the Seaside is very humble, but with fishermen stopping by and dropping off supplies from their boats, it is the freshest seafood on the island, and very reasonable. No liquor there, but you can go to the gas station up the street and buy a few cold ones.
  10. There are a couple of more spots-- The Thirsty Whale in Bar Harbor has the best fried clams in the whole world. Gaylan's Galley in Bar Harbor is very good--especially the lobster stew and indian pudding.
  11. Here is my recipe for Tarragon Sorbet.
  12. Not quite pastry and baking, but I fry sage leaves as a little cocktail snackie. Take a handful of flour, a handful of cornmeal and about a half bottle of beer and combine. Add black pepper. Dip the sage leaves in the batter and fry in olive oil until golden brown. Sprinkle with kosher salt and serve right away. They are so yummy!
  13. 5 segments per show--mmmm...I know I mentioned exploring Devon Avenue in Chicago (the Indian hood) up thread, but what most people do not realize is that Chicago has the largest Asian Indian population in the US.
  14. There once was a girl from Nantucket She put all her clams in a bucket She put up a pot to boil But could not find butter nor foil So she threw them back and said "Fuck it!" or There once was an alderman named Moore Who sought to a way to enlarge his score It need not be a large coup Any cause celebre will do He teamed with PETA, foie gras no more!
  15. There also was a Massachusetts law that prisoners could not be fed lobster more than seven times a week. I have a feeling that prisoners were not getting nice little boiled potatoes and plenty of butter with their lobsters. But back to the tank issue. If lobsters are not purchased, then they do spend time in a tank at your local grocery store, but on the supplier end, lobsters await their turn to grace your plate in pools and "pounds" which are holding areas, fed by ocean water. The lobsters are banded, but they do not really use the big claws for eating (just fighting and eating eachother) and have lots of fresh ocean water. In this way, suppliers can insure a steady and fresh live lobster supply, even though most fishing is done in the summer.
  16. Who cares if they have "some awareness of pain". They are big sea bugs--members of the spider/scorpion/cockroach clan. Do we think about a cockroach's pain when we stomp on it? And they have the ability to learn! Don't make me laugh! I used to be a lobsterman, and if they are so smart, then how come trap design has not changed in over a hundred years? Because they do not learn! Lots of things get in and out of those traps, like octopi, but not lobsters and crabs. Anway, if he is such a big vegan, then how does he justify selling meat? Or honey? Or cheese? Or milk?
  17. Then I have the Chicago spot for you! It's a pretty divey Pakistani bakery/greasy spoon place, very plain and homely, and full of cab drivers. It's called Zam Zam. I walk down about once a week to get a special sandwich for lunch--lamb sausage, grilled veggies, fresh onions and lettuce, spicy yogurt sauce all wrapped in a big fresh piece of naan! We could have lunch at Zam Zam and then check out my favorite spice emporium and fruit and vegetable market just down the street.
  18. I like Miracle Whip too, but not on everything. I am also a huge fan of Heinz's Salad Cream--a similar product, but not as thick! That's a little harder to find, but can be gotten at Carribean markets. But what I really use MW for is it is the secret ingredient in my chocolate buttercream! The MW gives the buttercream a satiny texture and a slight tang.
  19. Congratulations! I would love to show the around the IndoPak/Russian treasures of Devon Avenue in Chicago.
  20. My husband lived on a dairy farm in Iceland for six months. He said the food was pretty bad. If it was not completely putrid, then it was bland and boring. He did say that they made some very tasty cheeses and obviously the fish was really fresh, but the rest was pretty foul.
  21. When I saw that commercial, it reminded me of a dish that a friend of mine makes when really drunk at 4AM. It is called a heebie jeebie (he's an Aussie; can any Aussies confirm or deny the prevalence of heebie jeebies). You take a waffle and top it with creamed corn, vanilla ice cream, maple syrup and crumbled bacon. I have never been drunk enough to try a heebie jeebie.
  22. Oh, Chicago leads the way, again! On NPR this morning, Ald. Ed Burke (who was behind the no hand held cell phones whilst driving ordinance) is now proposing to ban other "distracting" driving behaviors--most notably, coffee drinking. One can get around the cell phone thing with a blue tooth or something to that effect, but how do we get around drinking coffee without hands? In the spirit of eliminating distractions while driving, I think Chicago should provide a car (with privacy glass) and driver to ferry my small children around. It is very difficult to give my full concentration to the road while listening to their babbles and squabbles. If someone else drove them. then I could enjoy my coffee safely at home and not endanger other drivers.
  23. Here is a link to the Philadelphia City Council pages: Philly City Council I hope Philadelphians will take the time to write and not allow the same thing to happen to them.

If they are doing it like "Project Runway," then the answer is a couple of hours before they start taping.

Here is a discussion I found about fragolino from another forum that answers the illicit question: Fragolino thread
