  1. Frozen Hugs ( As my son points out with a sneer-white chocolate isn't even chocolate) Slightly better? chocolate chips, pecans and raisins
  2. I'm so sorry to read of your cancer diagnosis. My husband and I had a wonderful night at Alinea last month. We'll be thinking of you and hoping and praying for a sucessful treatment and cure. Tobi
  3. We spent 10 days in Italy in Apr '06. Many places that require longer stays during the summer or other busy times were agreeable to shorter stays at that time. We rented a car and drove from Rome to the Siena area spent a night in Levanto, 4 nites in Alba(Piedmont) and our last night in Milano after turning in the car. We loved the area
  4. Hi I'm baking the props for a local theatre play. It's set in the 1950's and has a lot of cookies. I've looked thru some older cookbooks, the web, and spoken to some nursing home residents. The best memory is of a small cookie with orange peel, pecans, and nutmeg. None of the recipes I found are quite like this. While I can just create a cookie like this or use the shortbread buttercream the web turns up, I wondered if anyone here had ever heard of or had a recipe for the orange style one. Thanks Tobi
  5. I've been having the same problem as BryanZ. I generally start calling for reservations 3 months in advance, if possible. Today is the 14th day that I've gotten the mailbox full message. Any ideas? Thanks, Tobi
  6. I've enjoyed reading your blog, and I'm currently stuffed from being inspired to go eat dim sum today. Your weight loss is impressive, and please pat yourself on the back for doing so well. I find it even more impressive with your knee problem, as I have a torn meniscus also and find it really interfers with getting enough exercise. I went shopping yesterday and found two types of shirataki at the supermarket-Orchids and House Tofu- and will give them a try in the next few weeks. Thanks for the idea ( I think-I read the post that said they smell like dirt! )
  7. [quote name=Elrushbo' date='Feb 5 2007 How's the ala carte menu? We went to Prime last trip, and loved it. Their steak was flawless-medium rare with a nice char crust and the best sauces. We were a party of four, and did a mix of ala carte and the tasting. I reviewed the thread robuchon before we went and while some of the dishes had changed, many were the same. They did an excellent job of combining our meals and we are planning to go back next trip. We've also been to craftsteak three times as well as craft in Dallas and while most of our meals have been good(one really bad night-food&service) it's not what I consider a steakhouse. The sides and the sharing are the strengths. Prime and Delmonico are more typical with Prime being our favorite in LV, though I know others prefer Delmonico. I'm looking forward to hearing a report on Stripsteak.

    Oklahoma Wines

Wine production in OK is still in its infancy IMO. While we have enjoyed weekend trips to some of the wineries with friends, we only buy the wines when we go, as of yet. None of the wines tried so far have made me want to go buy a second bottle so I hope someone else can help you with this. There are some wineries that you can visit from okc if you have a car and time. website: oklahomawines.org As to wine stores- Edmond Wine Shop 1520 S Bouevard St Edmound, Ok 405-341-9122 and Byrons Liquor Warehouse 2322 N Broadway OKC 405-525 2158 are our preferred stores.
  9. Agree with the recommendation for the buffet at Bellagio, another good choice is the buffet at Wynn. We tend to go for a late breakfast or an early lunch and follow with a late dinner. Most days that is plenty, and if its not lots of great places for candy or cake. We loved both our dinner at L'Atellier(Oct 06) and Guy Suvoy(Aug 06) but the price difference is 300+ vs 900+.... so it needs to be a big win!(and its not winning that built LV) If you don't mind buses, you can get 24hr or multi day passes to go up and down the strip. We use a combination of feet, bus and taxi. If you have the time and don't care where you sit, use the discount ticket places for the showgirl show, and you can also sometimes find two for one on the internet. Circo is lovely for lunch, sitting and watching the fountains while eating. Sensi also does lunch, as well as dinner. Bartolotta at the Wynn is currently our overall favorite. Last trip we went once for the fish and then returned a few days later for the hen and a meat based meal. But if you like wine be careful of the first recomendations they make, I turned them down after being dissapointed in the past, made some counter suggestions of my own- received good assesments of my choices and ended up with much better wines.
  10. Add another positive recomendation. We took my aunt and uncle for dinner on 28 Jan. When they first read the menu , they were worried they wouldn't have anything to eat. Afterward, my uncle raved to all his neighbors about the short ribs! My husband and I wished we had the time to go back. We also had wonderful scallops, the polenta, the duck, the sweetbreads, and a lamb T-bone as well as some other dishes, four excellent desserts, well-priced wine, dessert wine and excellent service. Our waiter asked how I heard of the restaurant-Egullet, of course. By the way the Wall Street Journal talks about Michy's in its SuperBowl food coverage. Thank yoy Markk
  11. I agree. It seemed that a BIG deal was made about not having expectations re the Kitchen. Also, the quickchallange was Raw and on a number of the episodes there does seem to be some relationship. And now I'm going to let you takeshots at me. IMHO it seemed that the woman were more adaptable than the men! Maybe it was editing but the woman looked at what they had and got to work while the men whinned. Sam could have cooked his eggs omlet style or like they do in the thin sheets for sushi and made great bagel hand food with his pesto as a spread with the egg on top and the bacon as garnish, but it seemed that he saw the sand and stopped creating(he's my favorite and I look forward to eating at a place of his in the future). I thought he was from New York- did he never go to the beach? When we studied history, it seemed the men"moved mountains" and the "little woman" cooked with whatever limited facilities were available, just like this challange.
  12. Thank You! It's been wonderful reading all week.
  13. I've eaten ther three times. We've had Italian whites that they recommeded each time. They were nice but I don't remember being blown away unlike the wines I had at Guy Suvoy last month. I know that this answer is lacking what you really wanted to know about the list, but Italian wines are not a strong point of mine so I generally ask for advice and in three outings none have stoodout. The food keeps me going back , probably again next month, I'll try to pay more attention if no one else answers this before than. Slightly off topic but I hope its OK, Is that my family wants to thank you for your info on Boccondivino, we enjoyed it .
  14. Have a wonderful trip. Its such a beautiful area and i agree with Albert on the views from La Morra. We also ate at Piazza Duomo, but we ate upstairs. The night we were there there was a large table that are server said were some of the other restaurant owners at the other end of the room, and us at our end. We were treated very well and in trying to put into some sort of ranking , I put it below Renzo and Artine, my husband liked it more than either of those and my son liked Artine better and Renzo less. Sorry for the confusing info but I thought that would give you more than one opinion. Im sitting here looking at a "relanghe" bar -Im not sure what the proper name is but it is a hazelnut nouget candy that reminds me of our favorite Alba restaurant - La Libera( we first tasted it when it came with our check) if you dont already have all your meals planned go look at some of the comments on this place and see what you think. Alberts- Two months!!! wish I was there. And Bill your frequent trips are the 1st case of Green Monster Ive ever developed on this site . I write so poorly that I lurked for years before deciding that I needed to join just to contribute and then found myself drawn into posting occ.
  15. We stayed in Alba for four nights earlier this year. We had planned to drive to dinner but our lovely Agritourista turned out to be on a one lane road up in the wine growing region. I had trouble with the ride there. However, we had planned some of our further meals for lunch so that we could do some sightseeing and this solved the problem. We drove to Renzo for lunch without difficulty, but at night thru Bra would have been bad. Also went to Combal. and toured the museum after lunch before driving back. Taxi's are doable if you don't go too far. Where we were staying arranged taxi service for us into Alba for dinner and also to Artine(via the ridge road-I would occasionally open my eyes and sneak a peak of the beautiful scary view). We also as was suggested above tended to space our wine outand drank a lot of water when driving. And take Bill's sugestions-they led us to many great places. Of our 3 weeks in Europe the 4 days in Alba were my favorite.
  16. This article left me feeling that he just wanted to be contrversial. If others are raving about the restaurants opening in Las Vegas, then he wouldn't. Also, the last time I ate at Bartolotta (I've had 3 outstanding meals there) I saw the Chef, and Guy Savoy's family came to check that all was well(a pleasent 3hr time). Many lv places now have resident chefsand in many "outpost" or "chains" very stable wonderful chefs are providing our wonderful dining experiences! In fact only at a little "strip-mall" ma and pop type place would I generally expect the owner to be coking every time it was open. In addition, not only is lv accessible in terms of reservations it is also accessible in terms of handicap accessible-we(husband and son) spent 3 weeks in Europe earlier this year and prehaps one could have been accessed by my friends wheelchair-she and I goto Vegas two times a year to try out the new places and eat at old favorites. Not everyone can go any place they would really like to.
  17. Wonderful Week of Food. I too have read many of your previous posts with great enjoyment. Thank you for your effort.
  18. Wonderful and inspiring, my son says that I burn everything when I grill, but after this week I am going to look thru the garage for my Weber. Perhaps Egullet rain ponchos are needed?
  19. This has even been noticed in Oklahoma. In Short takes on Sat., May 13, 2006, in The OKLAHOMAN, "Goose liver gets the boot." "Are the rough-and-tumble politicos going soft? We're left to wonder, after reading that city leaders recently caved to animal-rights activists and voted to outlaw the serving of foie gras within city limit. Foie gras is a gourmet item made from the liver of geese or ducks that have been artificially fattened. The method of fattening - forced feeding - is what raised the hackles of the anti-crowd. The alderman who sponsored the ban declared that its approval lets it be known to all "that we uphold the value of a civilized society." Or that the City of Broad Shoulders clearly is losing some of its brawn." As you may be able to tell just from reading this they gave it a down arrow. I've been reading these posts since the beginning and hoped this would not be the result, and by the way some of the best foie gras I have had was at TRU, and some of the worst was at Charlie Trotters.
  20. Hello. This is my first post to Italy, but I have been reading both the new and old topics for the past months. I enjoyed Schielke's trip and almost decided not to drive after reading it, but couldn't see how we could get where we want to go without a car. We have reservations at Renzo, Antine, combol.zero and Duomo, but I could never reach Conti Roero by phone and they did not respond to my email. We have thanks to Robert Brown, Bill Klapp, Divina and all of you other possibilities inthe Piemonte area as well as some reservations in other areas. Thanks again for all the great reading and suggestions.
  21. Hello. I have been reading both the new posts and the old as we planned our nights in Paris. I'd like to thank everyone for the good ideas Ive found, esp. John. I was able to obtain the reservations I wanted for Mon. and Tues. but also am having difficulty with Sun. I have tried to call Le Reminet but I keep getting a recording, and while my husband understands some French, its faster than he can understand. Any ideas? Thanks.
  22. It may not look it, but we did go places other than Las Vegas. Alex Las Vegas (Aug) Circo Las Vegas (Feb) Bartolotta Las Vegas (Aug) Red 8 Las Vegas (June) Silver Fox Dallas (Mar) Coach House Oklahoma City (July-some really outstanding specials) Prime Las Vegas (Feb) Tableau Las Vegas (June-wonderful wine!) Fix Las Vegas (June-after show fun & food-Thanks Nightscotsman) Sensi Las Vegas (Feb,June & Aug-a menu that I didn't think I'd like when it was 1st viewed, led to three great meals)
