  1. Seeing as how it is difficult to find this in the east end of london, I think you will struggle to find it in Vancouver. Particularly the eels as they generally come from england, spain or portugal.
  2. Rumour has it new place opening in crystal pools. Anyone hear about this
  3. Thanks to both of you for the help, especially the notes about changing the courses, i can not believe i didnt see that. As for both of you but more particularly bonner, if i am in your neck of the woods or vice versa, let me offer you some wine. As for bonner it seems to me, you spend a wack of time in van and london (uk) perhaps ill catch you in one or the other and offer you pint or preferably a bit of wine. Thanks again
  4. Hello all, I have a valentine menu for a special someone and would like to be able to say that i have actually paired wines instead of just being arbitrary. Could you please point me in the right direction. Starting of with a parmesan reggiano and goat cheese canneloni with basil oil small small portion just a taste then i am doing a small soup of carrot and blue stilton which i assume may not be a great combination but any wines to coincide let me know Then i swtich to a cold appey with a terrine of deer and i added sour cherries to it. before moving onto the largers course i have a chicken leg that i have prepared with a good deal of presentation bone, i then wrap it in proscuitto. I also have a trio of sauces for this dish. They are honey, tomato sweetened, and grain mustard. Next i have a lamb tenderloin that is cooked in madagascan peppercorns, with crushed minted new potatoes and carrots. This has garlic in it. Then for class i have added tiger prawns head on becuase what women doesnt think they are classy (who am i kidding !!!! lucky the date does) this is served with a risotti and roasted butternut squash. Thanks and if you think the menu has some serious backfires let me know aswell.
  5. Personally I hunger for a nice tuna belly ceviche
  6. Ahi tuna is a stupid thing to crusade against. Choose a type of tuna, not a place when demanding quality tuna. Ahi refers to hawaiian tuna, any tuna that is caught around hawaii, or chosen to be called ahi. Simply put the choice to label ahi tuna is arbitrary. Rather search for bluefin from down under where there are farms. But to say ahi is not sustainable seems fashionable and not scientific. See below for a list of all genus of tuna http://www.fishbase.org/ComNames/CommonNameSearchList.php and search for for tuna
  7. I called regarding dining at rosemeade for lunch and was informed they are not srving lunch at present, and have not for some time. That said I imagine they plan to closer to spring. Tried calling to confirm my suspicions but no one answered. As for cocktails, I would skip temple and head to either the bengal lounge for classic cocktails made properly, otherwise head to brasserie for the same in slightly different surroundings.
  8. I just heard of this today. The most famous chef in town does this, he has converted his garage into a kitchen and dining room, where he serves away at 100 a head. Robert Sinclair of the sooke harbour house supposedly does this for friends etc... only by invite sort of deal!
  9. i was not suggesting anything nefarious, only curious as to why so many were closed and as to whether others had also closed for a period. As the link pertains to mostly brasserie and herald i do not see why that should sum this thread up either.
  10. A brief walk through town today and passing by many restaurants, I noticed that many are closed. Bravo, Herald St, Brasserie, Wild Saffron, any others people have noticed? Is this just renos, seasonal, or what? When are these places if any planning on reopening? I know brasserie has posted by late january they hope to be open.
  11. Well I have contacted both woodford and la fee, they are just getting back to me regarding price of shipping etc... as they mentioned the ship according to wieght so a group shipment will present some savings but not huge ones and a group buy is unlikely as these things are generally pretty cheap. Anywas if you want to jump on check how much of them you want and then pm me. And lastly thank you very much Mr. Stearns
  12. Peychaud, la fee, etc... any others people can recommend. Prefer victoria area, but otherwise vancouver is fine. Thanks

    Riedel glasses

Where can i find cheap riedel glasses? I need them for a gift, i dont want O series crap either, and i dont need sommeliers series unless reasonable. Which basically means sommeliers are out of the question. Thanks
  14. As I understand it, autograt is a automatic gratuity (duh). As such under the laws of BC it is not required to be paid. So if you feel unsatisfied with the service feel free. Especially as 20% is insane, inst that what thomas keller charges. The difference and this is important is service versus gratuity. Service must be paid as it is like a menu item whereas grat is up to the diner. Irregardless of it being added in advance. But those who operate business;s in town will be better suited to comment.
  15. Cashiest of cash crops but only one a year. And cash crop doesnt mean it pays a high amount, but rather that it is paid in cash. Also 1900-1920s the rise in production of tabacco from other areas of the world namely AFrica would have depressed prices, possibly making in unprofitable to produce tobacco in such a short growing season.
  16. Hey Karen, Hopefully you are still around, and can put this to good use. http://www.sustainabletable.org/features/backtoschool/ It does demonstrate the success made just south of the border in washington st regarding school food problems. Of course it also glosses over how the economics of such a project are not there, organically speaking of course. Noble cause and good luck,
  17. I wonder about the sports bar comment. You comment would be more accurate especially in comparison to bc if it were directed towards steak houses. BC is full of bars that are horrible for showing sports, and worse is keno and that racer cars crap. Due to massive growth in GDP per capita in ALberta many restauranteurs have realized the possibilities for profits, and as such have moved to open up shop there.
  18. In london a restaurant called Hakkasan, offers a soup that goes for 120+ pounds a person you must call in advance to order. Another chinese restuarant by the same owner sells a chinese tea that is very old (over 200 years) for a small fortune.
  19. Sorry I am confused you do want people to book through your own website winegeek ? If so why are you training people on opentable? Did you get a chance to look at toptable.co.uk? Having learned a little more about the system and how it operates by being connected to your pos system, i see it as more beneficial. That said i think major progress could be made, in terms of improving display and information.
  20. As my typing disappeared, ( a sign clearly) I will be concise. The opentable.com system is poor. It is nice to see that you have solicited other restaurants experiences. I imagine that not many of them have recieved many bookings from this service. What are the fees involved? - membership and % of table charges or a choice of one or the other There is no menu, the page doesnt offer new events(like egullet does). The colour scheme does not inspire booking. Lastly it lacks user inputs. Essentially choose restaurant then time and date and number insert credit card thanks and goodbye There is so much more that could be achieved from a online booking site. My experiences with them have been through opentable in america, it sufficed only becuase I knew exactly what I wanted. This service will eventually become the new form of pamplet at the airport and hotels about which restaurants to frequent. So you must see that as happening and realize that to continue to recieve bookings through it you may have to cough up more later. To see a decent if not very good demonstration of where this system could go www.toptable.co.uk Yes it is london focused, but it is for the UK, France (mainly Paris), Spain(Barcelona and nearby), Benelux and New York as well. This site offers numerous photos if not virtual reality views of the restaurant. A proper description, MENUS, a map of how to get there(very smart). As well as offering critic reviews, and the ability to review the place in question and get something for doing so(points for a free meal). Beyond the simple review you can also write your experience, which is published on the site. You must of course use the service and dine to comment or review. They take the credit card to ensure against no shows. They also have food and restaurant news. Lastly they have amazing deals for great places. I dined Gordon Ramsey Hospital RD at chefs table for a fraction of the normal cost. These deals can have numerous restrictions like monday nights only etc... to bring people in or for new places to establish customer base. Depending on what they offer to you reflects your price. Still restaurants are not a internet thing so this has yet to become huge even in london but it is on its way. More importantly a far better option than opentable.com. Then again i dont think they will be in vancouver soon. But something could be done! even just for van city.
  21. http://health.telegraph.co.uk/health/main..../28/hfood28.xml i think this link will add those who have kids or know those who do.
  22. the reason schools shouldnt back you up is a it costs money for one and more importantly that is not their job! be a good parent, if you care about your kids do something stop their obesity, and stop shifting responsibility.
  23. So if I understand correctly this whole discussion began off the comments of KAB in the news about how she wanted to save our kids from crap school food. Noble of course, but how is this not publicity when the problem is not at school but at home? If as you have stated the problem is in educating parents and children why do you begin your campaign against school provided lunches? Especially when the vast population of elementary school children are fed from home. Sure there have been comments about high school cafeterias and vending machines, but this is a question of choice, best not to attack there. Of course we have all seen the food pyramid and it is still taught and progress could be made there, but attacking the school system is laying the blame falsely. If you begin on poor ground you discredit your attempts. Kab reconizes that this will be long and ardous, and more importantly be a partnership with children and parents. As such I still do not see how this could be about the food provided by schools.
  24. Okay this time I did a rudimentary search for byob. So I am curious after reading that you can bring your own wine to the french cultural center restaurant what is the law regarding this. Beyond that what is the method involved, charges, etc... If it is accepted what places are known for being hospitable to such practices. Also for those that have never done it what are the faux pas when bringing your own?
  25. i dont see it as a misnomer in comparison to preparing a meal in school it certianly is cheaper to use outsourcing. You simply can not rap economies of scale if you produce in house. Your food costs will be higher than the guy who produces 50000 meals to you 1000
