  1. After the BC Wine Tasting yesterday we tried to go to Cardero's patio. It was packed and we sat in the pub. The wok squid are quite tasty, but not as good as Phnom Penh. Maybe Phnom Penh should open a patio out the front. Then again, not sure about the view.
  2. Monday - West for the Innis and Gunn dinner (Kobe Flank Steak!) Tuesday - Mito Sushi on Granville for lunch, Monk McQueens (no highlights) and the Gramercy (Gnocchi) for snacks - Wednesday - Red Star for dim sum (note - egg tart and eggplant are not the same thing although they sound alike) Aurora Bistro for the South World Wines and Slow Food dinner (crip skinned BC salmon)
  3. As the heat wave continues, my unairconditioned apartment is no place to spend a sunny afternoon/evening. I am searching for some good patios. I started this year with Monk McQueens. The view was there. The food was lacking. Have had similar past experiences at Lift. I have fond memories of the Jericho Sailing club. Not fancy, but great burgers and huge plates of nachos. Since I was barred from the Vancouver Yaght club for inappropriate use of a seadoo, what choice do I have? Suggestions and comments please.
  4. Kelowna restaurants - Waterfront is great for tapas - Fresco - Bouchon - Bohemian Bagel for casual lunch - Hotel Eldorado for a great Sunday brunch lakeside. I've heard good things about the Yellow House but my experiences have not been good there.
  5. Menu at the Gramercy is awesome - I live right beside, so I go there all the time. They are doing a wine dinner with Mission Hill soon as well. PM if you want more details or to be added to their email list. Disclaimer - I write their newsletters, but I swear the pay is not enough to make me at all biased. ) I vote by my devotion to the place. Trevor will make anyone feel welcome at the bar. Even me.
  6. Wasn't Menudo a boy band in the 80's. Did you "have" them? What on earth is Menudo (besides the band - if you could call them that). Help me understand.
  7. What about the space above Mario's gelato where they used to have the IVSA tasting every month?
  8. I would love to view the films. Perhaps something could be coordinated with Slow Food? Cassandra
  9. Elements Tapas Bar would be good if you get there early as it fills up quickly and they don't take reservations.
  10. Let's bring this back to Mexican! I have a client in Marpole now and have had several tasty lunches at Casa del Amigo on Granville and 71st. It is mostly a take-out place, and their meunu is limited to tacos, enchiladas, burritos, etc., but it's tasty, has character and prices are good! They also sell a few mexican deli items and are celebrating Cinco de Mayo this Friday (May 5)!
  11. Two things: Mark - How was Wabi Sabi - what did you have? Paul - Don't get too defensive - we all have different tastes! For example - I have had nothing but great burgers at Veras! What do you mean my not enough bread to the bun?
  12. The Ethiopian Restaurant on South Granville, Selassie, appears to be closed. What's the deal with those restaurants right after the bridge going South on Granville? They are just strange looking (except Paul's - I get that). There is some Cheesecake place that has been there ever since I moved to Vancouver in 1986. Anyone been? Any explanation?
  13. What about Curious. Good drinks and tasty food.
  14. Privatization would force the operators to provide food that the we the consumer want. If they don't they will not make money. Right now the concessions are not forced to be profitable because they are subsidized, so there is little motivation for them to provide the goods we want. Brian - you'd probably still have hot dogs! Long live capitalism.
  15. Keith - Land coming out of the ALR basically means land that will no longer be available for agricultural use. This is a reoccuring theme around our Province, ultimately meaning that we will eventually be forced to purchase more of our food globally, wasting many resources transporting it here. No local agricultural land = no local agriculture.
  16. Well! I guess that means we're not dating anymore! Hmm! On a more serious note: Go to the Burbs. I like Illuminate in Tsawwassen, Pacific rim Grille in Port Coquitlam, Harbour House in Crescent Beach (good for a stroll after). Locally the Grammercy Grill on Arbutus is really good (I ate there last night) and still of the radar. New chef from the Ordinary has the kitchen in ship-shape.
  17. You can still try the chef at the Gramercy Grill. I have had some great meals there - lamb shank and a wonderful mushroom ravioli. I am returning tonight.
  18. Side question: What is the dish called when you stuff different birds into each other?
  19. Are you serious? Could they not have given it a better name? It would be like calling Sean's retaurants Fiction , Fiction (#2) and Fiction (#3). Let's hope they come up with something better, It's a great spot. ← Sorry for the confusion. It will be called something else I am sure, but it is the same people (Connie Marples) and the same theme! Maybe Vintropolis Marinaside.??
  20. The old Quay Restaurant on Marinaside in Yaletown will now be................ VINTROPOLIS # 2! I prefer wine to sports however a big sorry to all you sports fans!
  21. Andrew, I so agree! They started with just an idea of a diner, then they decided to redo the whole place, then they bought the entire building. Down the road I can see it all working and the area being much better for it. Hope they can keep up the finances and work through the kinks. ONWARD Butirmoth! Cassandra
  22. Ordinary Cafe on 4th is now closed. The building is being torn down. More condos?
  23. My sister came to town and was deeply disappointed to find the Bread Gardens closed (gasp!). She craves the cinnamon knots with the walnut sprinkles. Anyone have a great replacement to appease her?
  24. Is there anywhere in Vancouver one can buy Seattle Magazine?
