  1. Karole, For local non-medicated turkeys (no prozac even if they were depressed? - poor things!) http://www.jdfarms.net/aboutus/ Not to name drop, but this is appropriate given the subject. I had dinner last night at Bishops with Barbara Fairchild - editor for Bon Appetit Magazine. She mentioned that she always made "Roast turkey with herb rub and shitake mushroom gravy" from Bon Appetit November 1994. She varied the recipe last year and everyone was horrified. http://www.epicurious.com/recipes/recipe_views/views/801 I've made it myself several times and it is absolutely fabulous. Having the stock in the pan while the turkey roasts is key. I usually add a lot of different mushrooms along with the shitakes to the gravy. Happy roasting.
  2. A little off topic, but what is the word you say when you want the chef to lay it all out for you? O something?? Thanks.
  3. Where Cabana was is slated to be the new William Sonoma. ← You mean Caban, I think. I'm pretty sure there's already a clothing store in that spot - is that just temporary? ← There is a clothing store there. Williams Sonoma will be in the area though and that seems to be the only spot that makes sense. Hmm??
  4. Are you thinking of Restaurant Connor Butler on South Granville near 6th?
  5. FYI Whine Dictator = Wine Spectator Read it BELIEVE IT!
  6. Steve, Thanks a ton for all this great information. You are becoming an excellent source. I am heading up to the Okanagan and will definitely be checking some of these places out. Along with about 30 wineries! Cassandra
  7. Call me 2 days ahead of time, I will make you paella. In fact I am looking at starting a light jazz duo Sunday nights and serving a few comfort food dishes eg paella, ciopinno and a bunch of chowders. BTW no chicken or meat products will be present in the paella. Marcus Fish 604.734.3474 ← Marcus - which location? Thanks!
  8. THE MOUNTAIN CLUB- An Exciting New Restaurant from Owners of The Ocean Club Set to Open in Whistler This Winter UNRELATED THE SHORE CLUB - 400 seats in the Hudson Building by Hy's/Gotham folk and THE LAND and SEA CLUB - location yet to be determined
  9. After reading your original post and thinking about your original suggestions I am going to recommend Hamilton Street Grill as well. Steamworks and Dix can't hold a candle to Neil's food and service. Prices are reasonable too. They'll be some familiar items for the gourmet-virgins and some great choices for the savy-types. Your choices are not recommended. I repeat - not.
  10. Does anyone know of any descent Oktoberfest celebrations. Please not the Commodore. I am thinking celebrations with big mugs and lots of sausage (no snide remarks please I know how that sounds!). Fried Bratwurst, Bierwurst, Bockwurst, Knockwurst...... Some place where lederhosen would be welcome (had I any).
  11. If you can get tickets and get to Tofino, the Clayoquot Sound Festival is really worth attending. (So I hear and read). November 16th. http://www.oystergala.com/
  12. We all know when things sound too good to be true, they usually are. (When was the last time you got an update on that highly-photogenic German girl locked in the root cellar, or the Albanian family who walk like chimps, or the Italian family-with-dubious-income murdered in Mexico?) Remember: Con is the root of Connor. Just in case, however, I did make an on-line reservation. I'm looking forward to trying the Cigarette of Avocado. Memo, I see Dogen, Connor and Tupelo - flying home to me ← NOT A CON: This is a short version of our correspondence: Hi Cassandra, We are taking over the location this weekend (October 1st) and it is on the west side of Granville at about sixth, next to the cheesecake cafe in what I hear was an old after hours. We will have 24 seats avaiable for appointment only in our dining room. We are pushing hard for a Halloween party opening (fingers crossed, knocking wood), and I will keep you informed of our progress when pertinent. Cheers, Chef Connor Butler
  13. Parkside's Andre Durbach and Chris Stewart have bought the Henry's Kitchen space and will be opening a Mediteranean Style Trattoria. 4025 Macdonald. Henry is moving further East. Kits is getting some great new talent of late. Perhaps I'll never have to cross a bridge again.
  14. Two new openings on the horizon: 1) I have to answer my own questions!!!! Gatropod is hammering away where Khondoor Tandoori (spelling?) on Fourth was (Cypress-ish) 2) 1050 Granville by somone "heavily linked in with A-Town Productions, High Society as well as Club Vibes" Huh? AND 3) The Vault in Cloverdale by the same people that did the Washington Street Grill
  15. I go frequently for lunch and I am addicted to their turkey burgers!
  16. The Bagel place near Granville and Broadway closed.
  17. I'd definitely recommend trying CapoWwild mushroom bruchetta, B.C. snapper finished with tiger prawns, and grilled striploin were particularly memorable. Don't forget about their private back room for parties. Fun times!
  18. Can we please play nice in this forum. I am getting sick of the negative vibe I am reading here. I think flowbee may have just been asking a question. Why read more into it than that?
  19. More accurately: The Noodle Box 1867 West 4th Avenue Vancouver, BC tel: 604-734-1310 For a history of the restaurant, background on the owners and the current menu, check out www.thenoodlebox.net Let me know how it is if anyone goes. FG
  20. Go back a page and you will see the photos and description. Looks good!
  21. http://travel2.nytimes.com/2006/07/21/trav...es/21tacos.html Chasing the Perfect Taco up the California coast article in the NY Times. Too bad they didn't go further north!
  22. D on't know where to post this. Just had sushi at Red Tuna in Marpole. The tuna was frozen solid. Apparently they ran out of the fresh/unfrozen stuff. How about telling me that when I order the sashimi. They took 30% off the bill. Did not make me very happy.
  23. Beyond Restaurant and Lounge will open in the Century Plaza hotel sometime soon. No details as of yet. Anyone know the scoop?
