  1. yah, i dunno how it works but the saucy fried chicken stays somewhat crispy even with the sauce.... uhhhhhhh getting hungry!
  2. looks like u didn't the version with sweet spicy sauce. i would never order korean fried chicken without it!
  3. I mentioned the Vancouver location of Cco Cco chicken in this post. i tried it a long time ago, it was ok. i like the korean fried chicken at H Mart better (i've only tried the chicken at their Coquitlam location...pretty far from downtown to say the least). H Mart is also known as Han Ah Reum. Korean fried chicken drenched with spicy sauce is also available in korean restaurants around the city....can't remember specifically where, but it's certainly not a dish that you can only get at H Mart or Cco Cco.
  4. here in vancouver, canada, korean-style fried chicken is fairly easy to find. there's quite a large korean population here, and fried chicken is available at a lot of korean restaurants and also at some korean supermarkets (like h-mart). there's also a restaurant here called Cco Cco Chicken that specializes in it.
  5. i love those hand rolls! nice and cheap and filling. does eho maki mean "hand roll"? i see them marked as hand rolls here in vancouver canada. i see "tuna salad" here mostly, and sometimes natto
  6. we happened to travel down to seattle for the day (today) and were planning on trying out this place, but it was CLOSED! i raced out of my car and saw the handwritten sign on the door, "on vacation until march 1".....my wife suspected that they went back to vietnam for "tet" (chinese new year) celebrations. ahhh, next time then... (but we ended up going to Le Pichet, which we LOVED )
  7. sweet! thanks for the review! i'm always on the look-out for new malaysian/singaporean restaurants. i remember going to the original kedah house when they first opened, and i liked it a lot. i went to orchid delight last week, they probably have the best oyster omlette in town...their other dishes are imho a bit average, so it's great to see another place open up. mee rebus is something i always skip over -- maybe i'll give it a shot this time! SHIOK!
  8. i'm using one called Miko Brand Mild Miso. I think I bought it at Fujiya. It's quite nice, less salty than other miso's, but I can't attest for it being low-sodium... the container looks like this (link is actually pic of their Shiro Miso, not Mild Miso). good luck!
  9. did you get to break the yolk yourself? or was it served to you like that?

    donuts!

some restaurants here (vancouver) serve them with a dish of condensed milk for dipping. no congee. you just order/eat them like that! i think it may be a shanghai thing...
  11. wow, looks like you've got a lot of money to throw around don't waste it on all-you-can-eat anything. those places are dime-a-dozen here, and hardly ever match the quality of even mid-range authentic Japanese restaurants. i've had great quality sushi meals at Shiro on Cambie near 14th, Ajisai in Kerrisdale, Toshi's on Main near 16th, so those are definitely recommended if Tojo's is closed. they'll be a lot lighter on the wallet as well Kintaro Ramen on Denman is also worth a shot. Very good as far as Vancouver standards go. And i've had great experiences at Guu, so definitely give that a shot as well! however, don't go to Guu during lunch...they don't do the izakaya-style stuff at lunch (only set lunches) and the last time i tried it, it was disappointing... dinner's much better. will this be your first time in Vancouver? i daydream about the jamaican food i had the first time i went to Toronto...
  12. we were in tokyo for 10 days in september, we loved it! i found great value and quality in those supermarkets in the basement of big department stores. i usually bought chirashi's: if we ever go back, i would be happy just eating food from depachikas everything tasted fresh. much better than most of the stuff available in Vancouver. i think these were from Isetan somewhere in Shinjuku...
  13. i've been lucky enough to find a few new dotch cooking show episodes online. i love them! i like how the crowd gets whipped into a frenzy as the cooking progresses. the host who stands on the right, was he ever on "next stop discovery" or similar show? i recognize him...
  14. might be Jaliscos at Lonsdale Quay...i've been there a few times, thought it was ok. but i like dona cata better Cilantro & Jalapeno looks like it's worth a try!
  15. on the topic of ramen, does anyone know how to cook those soy sauce simmered eggs that ramen is often served with? i love the soft runny yolks and would like to make them at home!
  16. you don't even need hot pot soup base, my family uses plain water...it's great cuz by the end of the meal, the water's got the flavour of all the meats you've dipped in it and you can add a bunch of noodles and stuff yourself silly.
  17. wow that was good. i love how traveling = eating out lots
  18. i bought a 3-pack of natto recently...some different brand that i never tried before. it actually contained natto and barley! adds a nice bit of texture to it. i eat it cold on hot rice, and yes i mix it in. sometimes i supplement it with some gohan desyo it took me a couple times eating natto before i loved it. i also started loving bleu cheese and other strong-tasting stinky stuff...i wonder how cheese and natto would taste together?
  19. so maybe u should've tried yesterday's water! it might've turned out better!
  20. it's down the block from staples as well. we finally finished the crystal hunan leftovers/doggy bag tonight. man it took a while. more observations: the chicken organs dish has 2 types of chili -- a white pickled chili (actually not that hot) and chopped up small red chilies (super fire hot). it's almost like they consider chilies another vegetable -- the dish was 1/3 chopped up chilies.
  21. we were in the area today, so we tried crystal hunan. got the chicken organs with white chili (hot hot), the dried bamboo shoots with ground pork (medium hot) and marinated pork heart (cold appy). the chicken dish kicked my face in! it was so hot and painful, but in a good, refreshing way. wifey seemed fine with the spice level, but i was sweating buckets. the chicken organs were mostly gizzard...too bad i didn't detect any chicken hearts or liver. the bamboo shoot dish was very delicious...i love bamboo shoots and the smell doesn't bother me a bit. spicy ground pork dishes always kick ass. it was my first time having pork heart, and it was sort of how i imagined it...very firm thinly sliced muscle. similar to taiwanese cold meat apps. the serving sizes are huge. i think you really have to go in groups of four or more to experience more dishes -- typical for chinese cuisine. we couldn't even finish half of what we ordered our first hunan experience was pretty good, i'd say... as we were leaving, the stuff on other people's tables look really really good. saw some mini hot pots and what i think was that stir fried pork belly dish. must go back soon!
  22. went again to dona cata last night and they had an interesting thing up on the specials board: cactus with longaniza for two for $15. it's served with rice, refried beans and tortillas. the cactus is sliced, so it resembles green pepper, but with a sour flavour. imho it was delicious! the guy there said they get it fresh from the states. too bad it's not a regular dish... i also noticed they serve pozole now. have yet to try it though...
  23. i've heard about trying a piece of tamago as a guage of the quality of a sushi place...but what exactly am i supposed to be looking for?
  24. sounds great! gotta try some time... btw we love the falafel and shawarma at Abdul's BBQ on Kingsway in Burnaby at Crystal Mall. It faces Kingsway, you can see it as you drive by. Run by this Syrian guy, very nice and the food there is a cut above the typical stuff you see around town. He takes a lot of pride in his work and his recipes. Falafel is fried-to-order, shawarma is made from choice cuts of meat, and his hot sauce is a secret recipe. it would be interesting to compare the 2 places...
  25. i looooove grilled onigiri!! great for us people who can't eat grilled meat without a bit of rice
