  1. we just tried a huge assortment of their pan. our favourite was the "mt. matcha" one with a green tea-flavoured custard topping and the banana one. wife liked the 2 sweet potato buns, especially the one with the mashed up filling (the other one had black sesame seeds in the bun and chunks of sweet potato inside). definitely will go again to try their other ones, like the corn one that another customer recommended.
  2. Cafe D'Lite? Is that the one on W. Broadway near MacDonald?
  3. i loooove mochi! i'm so there...
  4. if you've ever seen an anime called "yakitate japan!" you'll know that watching it would make ANYBODY drool over japanese baked goods! i want to try Kei's melon bread!!
  5. i've always loved Churchs chicken. very simple, honest fried chicken. none of that fancy pressure-cooking or batter up the hoo-haa. their tandoori chicken was actually good imho...too bad they stopped selling it.
  6. y'all should try korean-style fried chicken, available with or without that sweet spicy sauce. very nice stuff! there's one place on 41st in Kerrisdale called "Cco Cco Chicken", sort of across the street from the Oasis bubble tea place. We had the plain undressed 1/2 chicken there and it was very nice and juicy, lightly battered and crispy. Not greasy at all. i'd also recommend H-Mart (Han Au Reum) on North Rd and Lougheed. They've got a stall in the corner selling fried chicken and red bean-filled fish waffles. Even with sauce added, the fried chicken still has the crunchiness of the batter coming through. Delicious!
  7. sweeeeeeeet! i can see papaya hut from my office i forsee lots of afterwork takeout
  8. nice stuff! now i know how my mom uses those tofu sheets
  9. Please has it moved or closed down? They have the best oyster crepe and chow-kwei-dill!! ← i'm not sure. i was just REALLY disappointed to see that they were no longer there. i agree about the oyster omlette...the BEST i've had in the lower mainland! i love the crispy bits in it. i tried making it at home once, following some recipe off the net, but it turned out disastrous a goopy, gummy mess! i'll leave it to the experts to cook up that dish...
  10. i shoulda mentioned that when we went, there were only 3 other customers in the restaurant...so service was fine i do have a soft spot for the singaporean place at richmond public market (used to be called Rasa Singapura, now called something else that's hard for me to remember). the steam table stuff can be a bit dodgy, but the stuff the guys cooks up to order is hawkerlicious! i noticed that Orchid Delight is no longer there...it was on Willingdon in Burnaby, in a strip mall across from a high school, and down south a bit from BCIT. in my post above, i wasn't trying to use "malaysian" and "singaporean" interchangeably. it's just that i've seen malaysian and singaporean restaurants share some common dishes, like roti canai/prata, chili crab, etc. and then i noticed that Kedah House offers fish head curry, so i though "hey, we're going to singapore, we'll try fish head curry there and compare with here"...not trying to diss either cuisine or over-generalize. what i love about singaporean food is that it's got influences from all over. it's true fusion food that developed organically
  11. I had only been to their previous location on Fraser near 41st once. I remember it being good...not fantastic. Their satay was awesome though. Nicely charred. We noticed their new location driving back from the ferry. They now occupy a space that previously housed one of those "Chinese and Canadian food" restaurants. Before that, it was a fish 'n chip place run by this Asian couple. It's in the same strip mall as Visions Electronics and a home billiards store, among other things. Anyways, we went there last weekend and was on the whole pleased, and would come again to try out other things on their menu. google map link http://www.kedahhouse.com/ Here's what we had: The roti jala was a new experience for us. We're used to the regular flaky roti -- this was totally different: soft, lacy, almost mushy. I likened it to vietnamese crepes (banh seo), except soft and spongy. I'd order regular roti (or even their extra butter "roti boom") next time... The fried rice was good. The crispy fried anchovies underneath the omlette tasted nice with the rice. Not much else to the rice though...just a few small shrimp. But it was good nonetheless. My wife liked the laksa, but I found it way too strong...too rich, too sour. It was a gravy-style laksa, rather than the coconut broth type laksa. Best dish was the beef. Very rich and tomatoey, tasted great with the rice. Tasted great the day after too, cuz we couldn't finish it all and had to wrap it up. Their new location is huge! I will be back to try other stuff. They also offer Malaysian/Singaporean specialties by request (fish head curry, chili crab) but they need to be ordered in advance. You can also bring your own fish and they'll cook it for you and just charge you labour. I've never had fish head curry before, but it sounds great! I'd like to compare how it is to the real thing cuz we'll be going to Singapore this summer
  12. if you're looking for mexican products: Los Dos Amigos (41st & Knight, right beside the new Duffins donuts) - i've bought horchata mix and tomatillos from there. Jalisco's (Lonsdale Quay) - i noticed they had fresh cactus for sale when i went last weekend. also have fresh salsas, etc. located in the food court section of the quay, beside the sushi place. Killarney Market (49th & Elliot) - they've got a small section of mexican products...chilies, salsas, mole, candy. also have fresh tortillas and mexican cheese in the back beside the processed cheese and milk. there might be more places...perhaps on Commercial?
  13. Just had dinner at Chilo's last night. He said that he's open every night now. I had 2 salero, 2 lengua, 2 carnitas. That was probably 1 taco too much was feeling very full an hour later...
  14. I'm a HUGE popcorn freak! I love popping my own corn at home using one of those stovetop pots with the thing you turn in the handle. (example here) I don't actually have the real Whirley Pop brand one, just a cheapo Superstore knockoff, but it works fine. The other day I found some organic popcorn at Famous Foods on Kingsway, and it turns out really good! Very nice airy crunch with no hard bits--unlike Orville Reddenbacher...I've tried Orville Hot Air and Regular using the stovetop popper, and it just turns out too moist, resulting in hard bits when you chew it. The organic stuff at Famous Foods was great! I've also tried unpopped corn in bulk from Kernels (popcorn places you see at the mall) and it's slightly better than the Orville stuff, but the organic corn from FF pops up bigger and crisper Now, can anyone tell me where to find extra-fine grind salt for popcorn? Supposedly it sticks better to popcorn than regular grind salt. And yes, I do buy the flavour shakers from Kernels...Buffalo Wing is my fave.
  15. Do they have the DVD set available to buy at the Cinematheque?
  16. I just went there Sunday around noon. Had 3 lamb taquitos (as Chilo calls them...aka "little tacos"). They were great! Tender, sorta juicy chunks of lamb...but there was a bit of cartilage/bone in a couple of them...but I didn't really mind cuz i love eating the cartilige bits off of bones. Wife had a couple "salero" (beef rib/side) that she absolutely loved. Almost like stringy beef brisket. There was a different salsa on the table today--one he made especially to go with the lamb. It was a red salsa but a little different shade from the usual red salsa he has out. I talked to Chilo a bit and he said that he had a great cinco di mayo -- lots of drinking. Maybe that's why they were late opening on Saturday I have noticed that weekdays have been spotty...sometimes open sometimes not...and never during the day, only at night. Friday through Sunday is a good bet though...but actual opening time can vary between noon and 2ish i think. Then he stays open till around 9 or so... Maybe next time I go (or someone else from this board goes) I should ask him point blank what his actual opening days/times are His wife ("Lupe") is in mexico atm, so maybe he'll open up more often if she's around to help?
  17. Stormin' Norman also has ostrich burgers http://www.stormin-norman.ca/menu.html
  18. we had some ostrich dish for dinner at Fortune House at Metrotown...it was like a beef stir fry, except with strips of ostrich instead of beef.
  19. I read some of the old posts in this thread and some ppl mention Koon Bo at 41st and Fraser... I remember going there a few years ago after "buy sun" (paying respects to dead relatives at the graveyard) and had this delicious chow fun made with their own homemade "shyoon choy" (sour/pickled veg). Does anyone know if Koon Bo is still there and if they still have this dish?
  20. ok, now i don't have any excuses not try this place! dr0000l
  21. sometimes i like grass jelly in my bubble tea...but then i guess it'd be called "jelly tea". ok, i've been to both Traditional Taiwanese and Ellie. Ellie's got Malaysian dishes too if I recall correctly...we were doubtful about the authenticity of the Malaysian stuff, but it tasted fine in any case
  22. Legendary Noodle on Main St, just a few doors down from Hawker's Delight. I've only been there once, and I like the food at Sha Lin better. We ate at Sha Lin a couple months ago, and it was fine. I love their cutting (?) noodles -- the ones cut from a big hunk of dough, flying straight into the water. I had some with curry flavour and pork. Really yummy!
  23. I believe it's called "Traditional Taiwanese Cuisine"? We've been there a couple times and enjoyed the food. They serve this interesting "paper hot pot" thing...it's food put into a cone of parchment paper, and it sits in a contraption that keeps it over a candle. The paper doesn't burn or leak.
  24. i can certainly understand if customers didn't ask for their burger to be medium in the first place, that they would send it back to be cooked some more. but if a customer requests a medium burger, they should be able to get one -- especially if your meat is ground fresh and you know where it comes from. i'll sign anything to get a medium burger.
