  1. That is great news - hope you get back with a report; in fact this thread lead me to an interesting url... zabihah.com ... which lists Afghan Kebab Hse #7! ~waves
  2. being the operative term...In NJ, I've found... Pamir 85 Washington St. (bet. Cobb Pl. & Phoenix Ave.) Morristown, NJ 07960 973-605-1095 www.pamirrestaurant.com to be excellent - tho' not particularly close to my nabe either (Montclair). And there's always... Afghan Kebab House West 50s 764 Ninth Ave. (bet. 51st & 52nd Sts.) Manhattan, NY 10019 212-307-1612 Their half spiced chicken every bit worth the trip.
  3. Depends on how you define "bakery". The Montclair vicinity could certainly use a patisserie; Patisserie St. Michel in the Fort Lee area is heavenly - but that's about it. We've good bread, and a world of Italian baked goods. But croissant or mille fuille or quiche or even simple tarts - you'd make a fortune.
  4. Oh yeah. I want to see one of those baby's do it's thing. Grilling/smoking/q taken to the next level...
  5. Whoa... Did'ja tell the Barista? Too bad - that guy could cook. Hope he turns up somewhere local. And cheap. Thks Rosie...
  6. The paella at.... 115 Grove Street Montclair, NJ 973.746.1996 was delish - big serving, too. Must return... (oops. not bergan/hudson - is essex. sry....)
  7. Not only are you, the NYT went so far as to suggest Phila is the city's sixth borough... The Next Borough Not me, mind you - the Times.
  8. Huh. Yet, the food sounded good; I mean if you'd gotten food poisoning, the lamb was gamy and the bad actors/fight (maybe they robbed ya too); we are talking worse ever here... Ain't the land of Sopranos for nothing. Welcome to eG. The beginning of your post made my mouth water, so fill us in as you eat around. And be ready to rumble...
  9. Had dinner the other night at Epernay and - seeing how's it's in your prospectively new nabe - you ought to try their fries. Really perfect in the Belgian/Francais way with a delicious aioli mayo (including presentation), all for only $5.
  10. I've (family et al) eaten at the Bellevue Ave location in Montclair many times. Pretty good, especially considering the alternatives (to my knowledge) - like, none. I like the Brisket Burrito (and burritos in general vs. other items) and they serve a 'bar' style, which is a smaller one with a side salad (always fresh). Chips are endless, guac's good and the establishment is a kids favorite. Kind tight (but you'd have to expect it), interior is colorful and festive; hits just the right notes. It's BYO and often very busy...
  11. Have noted, droollingly, your photo reports in that link. I cannot wait (maybe next week, my tastebuds tell me); ummm - Dhosa...
  12. Have eaten a couple of times at favorites in these threads... Thank you kindly for guidance to Saffron - 249 Route 10 East, East Hanover, NJ Ph.#: (973) 599-0700 Fx.#: (973) 599-9444 - ...which everything other nested reviews said it would be. The Kashmiri Subz Biriyani was unbelievable - and Onion Bhajia perfect. Can't wait to return (had the Nawabi Chicken ke Tikka as principle platter - an excellent tandori treat). In another Indian adventure, made my way to favorite Moghul in Edison - and was surprisingly disappointed. The restaurant was full of Indian folk (a Sunday night), we had a poor table and were roundly ignored. The topper was a goat Rogan Ghost which was all bone and no meat (yes - I've had goat many times and know what to expect). Upon mentioning to our server, his reply was a downcast 'sorry' and a bill quickly presented by the busperson. Good to now know Saffron is available!
  13. Too bad you didn't include links in your 'argument'; anyhow, googling 'dean's bean's', 'GM' & Newman's pretty much puts the picture together. That fellow at DB's is pretty passionate about fair trade coffee, maybe more so than most. But it is a serious situation and sometimes radical folk shine a light in uncomfortable ways to get things done expeditiously. And - on topic - DB's roasts better than any Green Mountain I've had off the rack.
  14. Interesting site, Mr. U-Roast-em; maybe one day... And I am familiar with LaMinita, can be quite delicious... On topic - I have recently tried Dean's Beans (www.deansbeans.com & available at many Whole Foods, if you ask) and they really live up to the hype. Quite something to find supermarket coffee (ok, in a she-she supermarket) that is fresh and professionally roasted. Their Rattlesnake & Uprising (breakfast blend) are very good...
  15. Btw - had the most magical Mai Tai in Philadelphia at Roy's (15th & Sansom); at bottom of their version resides a small dollop of nut liqueur... Good stuff. (the prix fix wasn't bad either; short ribs of beef - very good...)
  16. Interesting article here on 'world's best barista' championship. "...Poulsen’s signature drink, called ESB for “enhanced sensory balance,” mixed pepper, espresso and lavender..." 15 timeframe includes cleanup - pretty stringent!
  17. The Red Chimney, on Rt. 3, is no more. I've passed several times and it seems to have become a chicken/burger joint, something like "Falls View". Anyhow - there are more cars in the lot now than before... Btw (the edit), you have got to see Jason's photos in a nested thread below on "A Taste of Greece" (started by finker). I go to those shots just to drool!
  18. My kids are nutz for the brunch at C46 - the foods' over the top delicious - yet your buds discount the place...? It's easy to find bad, cheap food - why even discuss it...? Look, if all they've done is 'read/heard a description' they ought to give China 46 on Sundays a try.
  19. First - this was my minor rant at 'beer' - but I think wine needs food (whereas beer does not). So, some kind of snack/tapas/nosh is requisite... I used to have a *great* time at the Soho Bar & Grill when they had flights, etc., what seems like eons ago (ok, I'm dating myself...). It degraded into a pick up joint (or always was - just, at first, the wine was important) but they did a lot right - flights would be brought out on large trays, bar was spacious yet you could easily see what others had ordered... As the 'wine bar' model matured it became more of cushy retro scene - not as festive and, well, sorta boring...
  20. Finally made the sojourn to Patisserie St. Michel today - what a treat! We arrived on the late side of the day (closes at 2:30 on Sunday) and M. Schneider couldn't have been more welcoming and genuine to my family with tastes of just about any of the treats still on display. A bit of chocolate cake, some creme brulee, cookies and macaroons - and we left with a ganache, creme brulee pistacho, a bucket of macaroons and a couple of tarts. His pate feuilletee (the crust of tarts, etc.) and sablee is just perfect; Jason's accolades are well founded - and I can't wait to taste the mille feuilles. Oh - and a bit of crabmeat quiche - out of bounds; but then we were on our way to China 46...
  21. Hi... I'm interested in your beef buy from Greenwood Farms; can you drop a line in this thread when your butcher buddy is back at the market w/ the goods...? Many thanks.

    Wine of the Week Topic

I'm rather a newbie, but have weighed in on several WOW's. I hosted one and had someone opine, offline, concerning the drop-off in interest... Internet comminutes are fragile, sometimes proprietary, and often evolving. I think active site mgmt (overall) and then, forum stewardship, yield returns. eG is going through a period where the overall mgmt wants to create a kind of place - and then, on top of it - forum hosts moderate to create what they believe is their portion of that space. Given the many forums I've visited in this site, I have to believe that dynamic (including WOW, thread mgmt, etc.) is at work in Wine. WOW seems (still does) like a great idea to me, I will still participate, even if I didn't have the time to attend the eG class (but have read) and don't know as much about wines as board oenophiles.
  23. Seasons Chinese Cuisine Address: 1061 Bloomfield Ave, Clifton, NJ 07012 Phone: (973) 777-5538 Is *not* BYO... Has been my 'take out' place for a number of years, owners are very nice and chatty (last time in, in fact, we traded notes on C46). However their chef left a few months ago to start Sesame in Montclair and the food (esp. soups, delicate items) has suffered a bit. I often go to the stuff my kids like (Mu Shu, Peking Pork, etc.) but the roasted duck and salt baked shrimp, scallion pancakes - all capable (yet predictable). (added add'y)
  24. Toed the line of skewing a sacred cow by gentle criticism of Fascino this 'morning, will now temp fate. I adore Epernay; Mark & Courtney have a great restaurant where they do many things very well (including the intangibles) - the frisee is perfect. But I'm not a fan of their bouillabaisse. Bouillabaisse in the US is really tough - getting the right fish almost impossible. Epernay's bouillabaisse is sorta more like a fish stew - tasty, yes - but did not satiate my authentic bb fix. His short ribs, however - to die for. Damn good fries & aioli sauce, too. And great service.

    FASCINO

I agree on service - and then I'd add decor. Fascino has a 'certain something special' going on, the food is very good, but other intangibles should be addressed. I'm not one of the 'over the top' in love with Fascino - just a regular guy that has been there a couple of times. The menu posits parings of contemporary creativity but have a difficult time transcending the sublime. They cook very well -that's enough for most places - but for all of the gushing (and TV appearances) and price, well, I expect a notch or two up (what's up? Ah... I know it when I see, er, eat - experience - it).
