  1. If you are looking for something a bit atypical, Supper does a pretty good rendition of boneless Moroccan wings.
  2. I had some chaat "kits" in my pantry, which I decided to use when some relatives were over... Sev Puri - Add onions, potato, cilantro, chutney provided. Not bad, but had something missing. Dhai Puri - Puffed puri came individually wrapped, but were not crispy fresh, thus brought the overall taste of the dish down. Pani Puri - Same puri from above, but no yogurt and mixed the spices in cold water
  3. Welcome to the thread Cookbook Addict. I have ordered her book and will let you know once I have a chance to review it. BTW, a while back there was a thread on how many cookbooks eGullet members have and based on your handle, I am curious
  4. Cathryn, you know what they say....rules are meant to be broken!! So, we expect you to try eggs w/rosemary and post your experience here Blurby, welcome to the breakfast thread. Pawncracker, I will have to see if we can get Arbroath Smokies over here...that looks delicious.

    Dinner! 2008

Dr T, I am jealous of the size of the lobsters you get down under Using dried porcini mushrooms are pretty simple. Place approx 1/2 a handful of the porcinis in a cup and fill it with boiling water. Let it rehydrate for 15-20 min. The porcini are ready to use and the added bonus is that the mushroom liquid/broth that is left is extremely flavorful and can be used in risotto or sauces. Sometimes the mushrooms can have some grit (dirt) which settles on the bottom of the liquid, so be careful not to pour that or strain it through a muslin cloth. Thanks all for your kind comments.

    Dinner! 2008

Dr J, that plate looks just fine to me. Though, I do like my crab immersed (simmered really) in the curry and love how it absorbs some of that flavor. For Valentine's day dinner, I made Pan Seared Scallops with Porcini and Truffle Risotto - Half way through, I topped one of the scallops with some bacon salt that I recently procured and it rocked!!
  8. Well, I did try the roast pork and it rocks. Got mine with provolone and broccoli rabe and it rivaled the ones you get in Philly

    Dinner! 2008

Very nice pic Amrita...here are some that suck Hanger Steak Frites w/caramelized shallots and demi glace. Sunday's Dinner: Mozzarella w/Balsamic Vinegar and Cherry Tomatoes Roasted Chicken w/Edamame Salad (from Wegmans)
  10. Scrambled Eggs w/Mitake Mushrooms & Toast
  11. Thai L'Elephant in Phoenixville has Miang Khum as a "Chef's special menu" item. It is hard to find this appetizer of onions, peanuts, chilies, lime, coconut, dried shrimp and plam sugar wrapped in a leaf (traditionally beetle leaf, but since these are hard to source, lettuce leaves are substituted). I highly recommend this if you want an unusual and somewhat authentic flavor from Thailand.
  12. Pics from the lunch dagordon refers to: Tuna Tartare: Good, but not great, perhaps because the dashi broth(?) and shallots over powered the dish. Black Cod w/Miso: As mentioned, well prepared and not over powered by the shiro miso. Rock Shrimp: Decent as a snack, but not what I imagined getting Sushi platter: It was OK and not as good as the one to follow Toro, Hamachi, Hamachi belly, fluke and 2 pieces from near the fins of the fluke (you only get 2 per fish): King Crab: I was a bit skeptical at first, but the crab was sweeter, brinier and spongier/fluffier that I expected
  13. Blistering Barnacles I could not make it !!@@! Nice pics Philadining, did you use a lightbox?

    Dinner! 2008

Good looking food all around.... The cold weather lends itself to braising, so this time it was Braised Lamb Shank w/Mashed Sweet Potatoes. Don't worry, I did not eat the whole thing Since I also happened to add some veal bones to the stock, it made for a good snack with some toast and fleur de sel
  15. Breakfast today was Mitake Mushroom Scrambled Eggs w/Seaweed Butter
  16. Apparently the Italian Bakery on Ridge Pike also sells roast pork sandwiches. Haven't tried one yet...
  17. Some of the more seemingly pedestrian stuff like fried rice was really good and unlike the typical fried rice.
  18. Thanks to Philadining for bringing this 10 day old dosa house to my attention and how could I not try it out after seeing his pictures? It is a little hole in the wall place (which meets one of my criteria for good eats). It seems to be run by a group of young India boys (many of whom seem to be grad student types). What they seem to lack in experience they make up in enthusiasm. Menu is small, but seems to have a good mix of Chaat, Dosa, Veg, non-Veg, South Indian and Indo-Chinese dishes. They did not seem to have my original choice of Sev Puri or Dhai Batata Puri. So, I ordered the Spinach Malasa Dosa Peek-a-boo - inside shot and a Paav Bhaji - Well spiced, without being too spicy. Paav means bread, which in this case is grilled on a flat range with butter. The vegetables (Bhaji) include cauliflower, peas, potatoes, etc. Everything seemed to be made fresh and was worth the 10-15 minute wait. In fact, some things are so fresh and hot that I almost burned the roof of my mouth. The word seems to be getting out on this young restuarant. In the 20-30 minutes I was there there must have been at least 10 parties come in, many for take-out. Overall, the dosa was not as good as say Devi in Exton, but they are relatively new and have (non-veg) items on their menu which Devi does not. I will certainly go back again....and soon.

    Dinner! 2008

Prawncrackers, I am willing to fly across the pond if you are willing to share any of the leftovers from those great looking dishes.
  20. Tim, try the Popcorn PoBoy next time (assuming you are not allergic). If you don't like it, I will buy it you. The gumbo is pretty good...especially on a cold night.
  21. Ever since I got that great PoBoy from Satchmo's, I have been wanting to do back. Since it was a cold night, I had a cup of chili to warm me up while I waited for my sandwich to be made. Chili was bold with a slight sweetness in the finish and had no beans. What did I order???? Drum roll please...... The giant Muffaletta.....meant to be eaten by 2 (I have half of it in my fridge, lets see if it survives past midnight). Great tasting (and filling) sandwich. The bread could have been a tad bit fresher, but overall a very delicious meal. As great as the Muffaletta was, I think my favorite is still the Popcorn PoBoy with that addictive creole mustard.
  22. This is a "send back-able" offense in my book. Was it advertised as pepper crusted? The portions look huge. And that's from me, who likes to eat large portions. ← In hindsight, if I was not hungry or have a wine to tame the pepper, I probably would have sent it back. The portions were pretty generous and we made 2 meals out of them.
  23. Does anyone know of a place in or around Philly that serves Singapore Chilli Crab ?
  24. Went to Zacharia's Creekside Cafe for dinner last night. Since it was a last minute decision, we were lucky to be able to grab a table for 2 on a Saturday. The decor w/open kitchen, ambiance and menu reminded me for a larger version of Fioravanti in Downingtown. For our first course, wife got a Goat cheese and fig salad and I got the Duck confit croustade - accompanied with apple gastrique and goat cheese covered in walnuts For our mains, wife got Duck - served with a wild mushroom risotto while I got an Elk loin, with demi glace, wild boar sausage, winter hash and Brussel sprouts, which happened to be one of the specials for the night. I was looking forward to this dish, which at $35 was the priciest on the menu. Unfortunately, it was so heavily seasoned with pepper that I could barely taste the elk. The wild boar sausage on the other hand was very nice. Knowing that the pastry chef had worked for Jean George in NYC and George Perrier, we saved room for dessert by getting most of our mains wrapped up. The dessert tray they came out with was impressive but we settled on the Creme Brûlée Trio - which included Pistachio (which was divine), Vanilla and Caramel All in all a good dinner and while many dishes showed potential, none of them were a knockout. Next time I will try some of their seafood, which seemed to be popular.
  25. I actually like Rocco's brick oven pizza. You can get a small (personal size) or a large and the difference in quality (and taste) are worth the extra price IMHO, especially since the large is around $15, which is not bad at all. Can't remember whether all the occasions when I ordered the brick oven Margareta were on a Friday or a weekend, will have to keep as eye on that. They also have good pasta specials. $9.99 gets you enough pasta for 2 people, a side salad and a garlic roll.
