  1. Attended a recent wine dinner party at Blackfish. Some courses featured a comparison of old world and new world wines. The menu featured: Amuse Bouche: Beet air with Star Anise Smoke - Very El Bullish experience. When they were making this in the kitchen I thought the smoke alarm was going to go off as the entire place was filled with star anise smoke. Spring Carrot Soup with Rose Geranium 2006 Hermanos Lurton Rueda - The soup was served cold which was a bit of a surprise, in a pleasant refreshing way. Perhaps a touch too much geranium. Roasted Fluke, Duck Ravioli, Sunchoke Puree, Fenugreek Froth 2004 Jean Luc Colombo Condrieu Amour de Dieu and 2006 Four Graces Pinot Blanc - The item that stands out the most in my mind is the ravioli, particularly the duck filing more than the ravioli skin. Preferred the Condrieu (old world) by a hair, though they both offered great nuances to the dish. Foie Gras "Semi Frodo", pistachio, anchovy, carbonated lemon, pink peppercorn 2002 Schoffit Tokay Pinot Gris Rangen de Thann Clos St Theoblad Selection de Granis Nobles - Think Foie Gras ice cream.....hmmmm. Why can't I buy this at the neighborhood ice cream store? Some might think the pairing was a bit Cliche, but I am a sucker for a good sticky with Foie. ** Sorry, no image of this, too busy eating the Foie ** Veal Breast with Morels 1986 Chateau Beychevelle and 1993 Robert Mondavi Cabernet Reserve (tip of the glass to Mr Mondavi) - The star of the night. I could have happily eaten this if they had subbed this for all courses above. The Beychevelle was surprisingly young and took some time to open up but once it did....it was simply sublime. Cheese Course: Gorgonzola Panna Cotta, Crunchy Brioche, spicy Yuzo, grapes 1994 Croft Vintage Port N.V. Scheutz Randall Port - Good, but not particularly memorable for me Dessert: Smores with Homemade Strawberry Marshmallow, Chocolate Gram Cracker Crunch - If there was a slight miss this night, it would be the cholocate gram cracker, which was about as hard as a hockey puck and posed a bit of a challenge to break/cut without a knife for many diners. 1994 Croft Vintage Port N.V. Scheutz Randall Port Overall a great Monday night with good food, wine and company.
  2. Yahhh !! I sense an eGullet outing in the near future.
  3. Here is what the Indian mangoes look like...(I have also seen them in a black box)
  4. For breakfast today we made Vietnamese Coffee and Scrambled Eggs w/Sichuan Cold Chicken
  5. Laban reviews Jasper's and nearly a year later still finds the service missteps I experienced and reported.
  6. FYI...I saw some boxes of Alphonsoes in the Indian store in Exton, in the same shopping center as produce junction and Han Dynasty.
  7. Last year was the first time they were allowed back in the US and it was hard to find. I was finally able to buy them at $10/each + shipping from an ®etailer based in CA. However, just yesterday I bought a box of 12 for $30 from an Indian store in Norristown. Much better value this time around, though the quality is not the best. While the store owner was not sure if he would be getting another shipment, I might be getting 2 dozen super high quality ones shipped to me from India. If you are curious about the taste, PM me and I will share some.

    Dinner! 2008

VERY nice Bruce....and I'll assume my invitation was lost in the mail
  9. Eldereno, welcome to the thread. Boy oh boy...I was away for a few days and look at all these wonderful breakfasts !! Now I gotta figure out how to get those chile fed chicken eggs here
  10. Not to make excuses, but you might be on to something. I was thinking along the same lines, in that Sunday evening is typically a slow night for Indian restaurants and probably the night the regular chef is off (if they get a day off that is). Taste of India is good for typical Indian dishes, but Dosa Hut (relatively new hole in the wall) is growing on me.
  11. While I have not personally been there yet, the description of the place's setup and its partial menu reminds me of the Ratan Tata Institute (RTI), a literal food institute in India which serves Anglo Indian dishes. Wonder if the owners are trying to model RTI.

    Dinner! 2008

Sometime last week I made Flat iron steak with mashed sweet potatoes and a red wine demi glace sauce, topped with spring onion The week before I was in San Jose, CA and went to a place that served Singapore Chili Crab, which I plan to replicate at home.
  18. A few weeks ago, I was on the west coast and had Menudo (Tripe Soup) in San Jose, CA and Huevos Rancheros in Scottsdale, AZ
  19. Did I miss the recipe for the bagels?
  20. If they serve ribs on weekends, it might be worth the 15 minute drive from mine
  21. A few weeks ago the wife and I went to Liki (sushi and Hibachi place) in Phoenixville and ordered some sushi and bento box for lunch. It all looked and tasted good until we got home and didn't feel too well. I am willing to chalk that up to a rare occurance, but it did not leave the best first impression for me. Last week we went to Spiedie Bistro that Philadining posted about upthread. Unfortunately this place is anything but speedy. Service was friendly, but it took over 20 minutes to get a salad and a sandwich. The grilled meat tasted good but prices seemed expensive for the size of the portions. I wish them the best but given the awkward location, price point and long wait time, I am afraid the prognosis does not look very rosy. On the upside, the dosa hut in Eagleville near Norristown (I know its in MontCo) is cranking out good cheap Indian eats.
  22. 5 days of eating in SF including Yank Sing, Kokkari, Piperade, the fifth floor and Fleur de Lys can be found on this thread.
  23. Bruce, how did you like the Akuri? Try it with some tomatoes, it gives more depth of flavor.
  24. I have a reservation for tomorrow evening. Does anyone know if the Japanese Kobe comes with the "Uber Omakase" or the regular Omakase? Molto e, want to meet up tomorrow?
