  5. Relatively new BBQ place: Jimmy's BBQ Westgate Plaza 309 Lancaster Avenue Malvern Pa 19355 http://jimmysbbq.com/ Its in the same plaza as Royal Thai, Mino and Staples, not far from Classic Diner. Got the Ribs - Nice smoke rings, deep mahogany color on the outside Smoked Wings - Smoked Chorizo - They buy their sausages (sweet, hot or Chorizo) and this was not my favorite. The sauce they serve can be a bit sweet, but other than that, they are doing good and starting to gain some loyal clientele.
  6. Kim, a "slow cooked egg" or sometimes called "hot spring egg" is an egg that is cooked for a long time, about an hour in water that is around 65C. They originated in Japanese hot springs, but the recent trend was to cook them in an immersion circulator (which is what I did) or a water bath at 63.4C for 1 hour. This method allows the white to just set while the yolk is still tender. Sort of a version of "half boiled egg", but a looser egg white.

Nice sounding sandwich. Did the bread allow you to appreciate the subtle flavors of the Iberico bellota? I am guessing you bought the ham outside the USA?

  11. In India they are usually roasted directly over coals until the skin truns black and ruptures a bit, which makes it easy to peel.

  17. That's why it is on my short list...along with Cochon.
  18. 708 W. Ridge Pike Limerick, PA 19468 (484) 932-8180 www.craftalehouse.com This place opened in late Dec 2008 and has already attracted a loyal following of beer lovers. I happened to visit just after its 1 month anniversary. It is a small, cozy place who's ambiance reminds me a bit of the drafting room in Exton. The bar was full on this Saturday afternoon while the tables were about 1/2 full. The obvious draw is the beer, but the food is not bad as illustrated by the Fire Roasted Tomato Soup, Burger and Braised Short Rib Sandwich we ordered. The burger had a nice smoky crust on it but was served a little beyond the "medium" we had ordered. The hand cut fries and short rib sandwich was awesome. I noticed people at the bar ordering buckets of fries. Service was very friendly and knowledgeable, but the kitchen seemed a bit slow. They let you sample any of the beer you want, which was great help in narrowing down my choices from their superb list. Also took advantage of their 20% discount on carry out 6 pack. They are closed on Sundays but I hope they open for brunch soon...we could use a place like the Drafting Room or Classic Diner in the area. Gotta give support them for bringing good beer and food to a neighborhood where it is lacking.

    Cochon

Went to Cochon with 3 others earlier this week. Our goal was to sample the menu and everything on the menu sounded good, so we ordered almost everything, from the regular and tasting menus including: - Cauliflower Soup - Deep soulful creamy goodness with acidic accents to tingle the taste buds. - Boudin Noir on black lentils - Interestingly this did not have the strong flavor and smell compared to other interpretations I have tried before. Pickled baby turnips seemed to punctuate this dish. - Chicken Livers - The perfect blend crispy, silky textures, sweetness from the caramelized onions and tartness from the balsamic vinegar easily made this my favorite dish. - Escargot - Tender, garlicy ... who needs McNuggets? - Country Pate - Very good pate, but unfortunately out-shined by the other appetizers - Roasted Suckling Pig - WOW. Fork tender pulled baby pork (shoulder?) over black lentils, accompanied with some crispy skin. Unfortunately, no slow cooked egg in this rendition. - Grilled Pork Loin - Juicy and succulent but not as memorable as the suckling pig. - Cassoulet - Probably one of the better versions you can find in Philly area restaurants. The beans on the version we got seemed a tad overcooked and dry and our dish seemed devoid of sausage. On the other hand, the duck confit it contained was perfect. Monsieur TarteTatin, your cassoulet still reigns supreme. - Rack of Lamb - Well cooked to the rarer side of medium rare in a delicious sauce which was scraped clean from the plate with some bread. The lamb rack seemed to have a little fat, which enhanced the gaminess. - Pan Fried Skate Wing - Served on a bed of fennel and tomatoes. Sadly, the least favorite of the lot. Keep in mind that it was not a bad dish, just not as spectacular as the other dishes. - Chocolate crepes with butterscotch and bourbon ice cream - The crepes were bit too sweet but we were too full to mind. The ice cream was great. We might have even ordered a few more things I am not remembering. We paired the dishes above with wines from the Rhone, including 2005 Louis Latour Grand Ardeche Chardonnay 2004 Domaine des Remizieres Crozes-Hermitage 2004 Charbonniere Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Mourre des Perdrix ?? Guigal Cote Rotie A great rustic meal on an especially chilly night, with terrific camaraderie at the table. Sorry, no pictures.

    Dinner! 2009

Was a little cold earlier in the week, so I made some braised short ribs with some parsnips over mashed sweet potatoes. Does not look appetizing, but it hit the spot after 4.5 hrs of braising.
  25. Had a Chinese New Year dinner at Sang Kee last year and it was BYO and great.
