Because in Craft's case, I didn't want 90 percent of the stuff on it.

Various places in NJ at large wine retailers. The last time I bought any port was about 6 months ago, and I was paying around 105-110 per bottle for a 77 Dow. Warre, Grahams, etc about the same.

She's the one that ate my marrow at Craft, yes. I think its icky.

Insert tongue far into orifice. Move it slowly about from side to side until you feel the soft stuff inside. Then pressing your lips around the edges, suck vigorously. Who needs a spoon? You've greatly improved my marital life, thanks.

Good lord, when the hell do you plan to drink these Port vintages? In 2030? 2040? hell I'm drinking my 63's and still buying the 77's...

damn youre lucky. I wish we had a lemon tree. Can't do that in New Jersey, i'm afraid.

but is it really possible to make good limoncello without Amalfi or Sorrento lemons? I mean, they TASTE different, right?

Margies is excellent, and they have this really cool way of preparing their frozen custard treats -- they take these small blocks of frozen custard, and put them in this metal cup with this hole in the bottom, which is put into this machine which resembles a big drill press with a huge corkscrew thing on it. They put the mix-in toppings in there, and the screw thing shreds the topping and ice cream into this mixed up stuff, which they then pipe into the foam serving cups. Sort of like the Dairy Queen "Blizzard" but lots better. They also have really good frozen custard cakes, which are great for parties/barbeques etc.

Ocean King is a solid Dim Sum restaurant, but we havent been there in over a year. Same with Noodle Chu in parsippany, both were our mainstays in the morris county area when we were living there.

Man I wish we had a Wegmans in North Jersey. Anyone hear of any plans to put one in Bergen County?

Note to all: if youre gonna go to El Gran Mexicano for breakfast (they have huevos rancheros, mexican hot chocolate, omlettes, etc), you gotta do it during the week. We went there this morning at 11:30, and they shooed us away -- They dont open until noon during the weekensd.

Can't beat Uncle Louie G's Italian Ices (cream ice, non dairy) right across the street from East Kaiten Sushi in Bergenfield on Teaneck Road. Open usually to 9PM, later on hot summer days.

EU says only greeks can make feta
Jason Perlow replied to a topic in Elsewhere in Europe: Cooking & Baking
Bulgaria is part of the EU? I wasnt aware of that. Cant they just call it something other than "Feta" EDIT: OK, I read the ruling. So they have to call it something else, big deal. Like Shepherd's Goats Milk Cheese. -
Oh, duh. Its like Calvados then.

Isnt that technically vodka? Its a distillate of potatoes, right?

Rachel and I at at El Gran Mexicano last night. You're right, it's an itty bitty hole in the wall place with excellent food. I had 5 different kinds of tacos, rachel had the snapper. Food was excellent, we will definitely be going back. I will also add that their mole (which I asked for a little condiment bowl of to try with my tacos) is some of the best I've ever had -- very powerful, bitter taste, like good mole should be. The familly is from Puebla, and thats about the best mole there is, as it originates from there. The salsa is excellent, very strong cilantro/herbal taste, correct consistency for dipping, but not spicy at all. If you want to supe it up, they are more than happy to give you a bowl of mashed chipoltles in adobo sauce that you can use to turn up the heat. Awesome.

We havent tried Indigo Smoke yet. I can tell you this though, Fink is serious about his barbeque. He has this big commercial smoker in his kitchen and smokes his meats at least 10 hours before serving them, and uses mostly cherry wood logs. Probably the closest thing we have to real southern barbeque in NJ. Highly recommended.

Confession Time: Share Your Culinary "Sins"
Jason Perlow replied to a topic in Food Traditions & Culture
Cheese Bagel Dogs. Those things that you find in college dorm vending machines, Crappy hot dogs encased in a bagel like dough injected with cheez. Which you then microwave. Cheese filled Combos. Cause Combos really cheezes your hunger away. PortWineCheeseFood. Used as a dip for hard bavarian pretzels. Slim Jims. Funyuns. Tower Isle Spicy Hot frozen Jamaican Beef Patties. Nuclear. Frozen White Castles from the supermarket. I could go on.... -
Theres almost a Zen-like quality to the idea of Matzo Brei with bacon. As if all the evil confluences of the world collided to make something beautiful.

Greek dolmades, with a rice/feta mixture, served with a greek salad. Turkish and Lebanese ones are basically the same, are they not?
-
Rum cream, poured over ice.

Actually we have an exact bill... we paid for it in advance. And I hope it doesnt take longer than that. We're eating in the basement, we plan to cook with the outdoor grill a lot, and eat out.

Tomorrow we are having our kitchen demolished, in a remodeling project that will take 2 months. Here are the before shots -- Rachel will provide the ongoing narrative and we'll document its construction over the next few weeks. The Perlow Kitchen, prior to remodelling (click)

They were good, but had too much five spice powder in them. I hate that flavor when its too strong.
