  1. Chicken noodle soup (from a can... it's what my daughter prefers) and cheddar cheese bread.
  2. Oh boy... I wonder how overpriced it will be in Japan. Don't get me wrong, I like Coldstone Creamery, but it's so expensive that I don't go often.
  3. The kintoki that they serve at the Obon Carnival at the Buddhist temple I went to growing up was just sweetened, cooked azuki beans on a bed of plain shaved ice. I actually preferred it to the shaved ice.
  4. Ah, I recognize one thing in that picture... Marukawa gum. It's a favorite in our house. It's just the right amount of bubble gum for a small child. There's a restaurant in Visalia, CA that gives out boxes of it when you order their children's meal. My kids look forward to eating there when we visit their great-grandparents.
  5. ramen of the instant variety, leftover rice with umeboshi, or ice cream
  6. My father-in-law likes to eat fresh tofu with shoyu and katsuo-bushi. My mother-in-law buys those little single serve packages of katsuo-bushi though. My father-in-law wasn't too happy when I told him that they sell katsuo-bushi in packages like that in pet stores as cat treats. The look on his face was priceless.
  7. I hope you don't actually complain about this out loud. In most states in the US, that would violate the law.
  8. As a general rule, I don't go to fast food chains for good food, just for something to fill my belly and keep my kids happy. That said, I'm usually willing to try the new things that pop up at Jack In The Box, Taco Bell and Carl's Jr. Chain sit down restaurants are a different story... I expect tasty food, but nothing spectacular.
  9. Not all non-dairy products read like something out of a laboratory. Organic soy milk, for instance, has relatively easy labels to read. Not that soy milk tastes anything like real milk though.
  10. Do most schools in the US allow parents to have lunch with their children at school? I don't remember that being allowed when I was in school (though at my elementary school, almost no one stayed for lunch). It seems like Peter really enjoys having you come for lunch. Does most of the children like the idea? ← The school my kids go to allows it. They have what for the most part is an "open door" policy, which means I can observe them at any part of the day, except when the standardized testing is going on. I try to eat lunch with them once per trimester, just to make sure the adults that supervise during lunch are on their toes about older kidlet's food issues.
  11. I finally got around to trying the Mango Hi-Chew I picked up last week. They're really good. They got definite mango flavor without being too overpowering.
  12. Ah... life with little boys. My boys are 8 and 6, and since they each turned 3, they seem to get into predicaments like that at least once a year. I've got lots of grey hairs from them. Thankfully my not quite 3 year old daughter doesn't seem quite so ready to stick her fingers in weird places.
  13. What I find off putting about a lot of vegetarian cuisine is the concious effort to have some kind of meat replacement thing, like tofu dogs and they're brethern (sp?) and are molded into faux meat. I don't have a problem with not having meat on my plate. I like tofu without the need to disguise it. If I'm going to conciously eat something meatless, I don't want chunks of faux meat involved.
  14. I had a sunflower seed butter and grape jelly sandwich on a buttermilk white bread. Nothing too exciting. I've been nauseous all day (and who says you only get morning sickness the first trimester of pregnancy) and it's all I've been able to keep down besides a single mango hi-chew. Cheryl
  15. The husband creature says he'd actually try that ikura pizza. I'm more of a pepperoni, sausage, olive, zucchini, artichoke heart and fresh garlic pizza kind of gal. I'm not a big fan of shellfish or fish with cheese, so putting them on pizza doesn't sound good to me.
  16. When I was at the local Asian market on Saturday, I picked up 4 packages of hi-chew... strawberry (my favorite), lemon (for the hubby) and 2 flavors I haven't tried yet, passion fruit and mango.
  17. Wow... that bento set is really cute Torakris!
  18. Now that I think about it, my mom never made stir fry dishes that I can really call Japanese. Most of the Japanese dishes Mom made, barring yakisoba, were simmered dishes. I don't think Mom has ever owned a wok, and I'm pretty sure that my Nana (mom's mother) doesn't either. That said, I love kinpira gobo. I deep fry with canola at home. I don't know why, but I prefer it to soybean oil. I don't ever use peanut or sesame oils due to my kids allergies.
  19. Wow... that looks like a third of a tomato on that first burger on the freshness burger website... I thought my favorite local burger joint here was bad about about that (three 1/2" thick slices).
  20. The Marukai in West Covina, CA has a 99 cent section at the front of the store. Apparently there's also a Japanese 99 cent store somewhere in El Cerrito or Richmond in the Bay Area.
  21. can we please not talk about this show as if it's something to be proud of? ← I saw a few episodes of a show done by Christina of "Christina Cooks" years ago. I couldn't get over that condescending attitude of hers towards non-whole foods and non-vegans, not to mention the butchery of the terms "kombu" and "oden".
  22. The Zojirushi stuff is always more expensive here than in Japan. I really liked the second one you posted Helen... wish I could get one here in the US.
  23. I've been eyeballing bento sets like the one Torakris's husband has for my 8 year old to take to school in the winter. He can't eat the school lunches, and occasionally likes to have a hot lunch on a cold day. I've found the following here in the US. The Zojirushi Bento Series http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/brows...7298251-6168132 similar item made by Thermos http://thermos.smartermall.com/product.asp?sku=1917730 What I have for him now http://thermos.smartermall.com/product.asp?sku=1917913
