  1. McDonald's McGriddles (altho I don't often like sweet things for breakfast). Has anyone noticed that there are times when some type of 'bad habit' is what you crave and only that will do? Like I need a Quarter Pounder and a Whopper just won't do?
  2. My mom had a can with a lid that she poured all grease into, sealed it, and then put it into the trash. I do the same, or else I wait until it solidifies & then scrape it into something that will keep it from spilling over, and put it in the trash can. The only problem is if it leaks, you then run the risk of having the 'Raccoon' family pay you a visit . I had that pleasure once, and because they were enjoying themselves so much, also dined on part of the plastic trashcan the trash service provided!! Not to mention - having a septic system forces you to think before disposal, b/c you don't want to pay to have the tank pumped.
  3. Mmmmm - what would this consist of? I don't know a lot about Indian food but love trying anything new - please elaborate.
  4. Can you tell me where the Farmer's Market is in DelRay & its hours/days? How does it compare to Arlington & Dupont? Sorry about the above post
  5. The one I was thinking of seems to be a summer-only thing, but this one seems to go year-round. I work in Arlington rather than live in it, so I'm usually at the Del Ray farmer's market in the summer, and eating supermarket root vegetables in the winter. ...Come to think of it, I should try to go to the Arlingtton market more often. Er, at all. As for hypermarkets, Harris Teeter can't compete with Super H, but then, nothing can. The only supermarket chain I know of whose patrons can turn milling about apparently lost and aimless into an organized agressive action that would impress Napolean. My shopping-fu is weak, weak, weak. ←
  6. OK, here's a new one! My husband, a former DC cop, always has to sit so he can 'see' (for a good reason). SO... when we started going out, I had to figure out where he had to be and where I had to be. Now I sit with my back to the door/window, and he gets the great view!!! Such a pain to always look at a wall and miss all the action. But on the plus side, I am now with someone who will share his meal , and (even better) appreciates my efforts in the kitchen and lets me fix whatever I desire!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  7. In Fells Point, try Kooper's, a bar w/free happy hour food and, according to my husband, the best sandwiches EVER!!!
  8. I agree, keep the wine section. If there's more about ethnic cuisine, then it would be helpful to see suggestions of stores where items can be purchased. For those of us who live in the far 'burbs BUT who are willing to drive to find what we want, it would be great to have an idea of where to go to make the day successful.
  9. I'm SO excited about this thread! I, too, am new to Thai food and now find it more interesting than Chinese (as a kid, we didn't eat out much, and Chinese was as 'adventurous' as my parents wanted to be). I recently purchased "Hot, Sour, Salty, Sweet/B] and Simply Thai Cooking and am (proudly) no longer a "Larb Virgin" :raz As a relative newbie to eGullet, I'm happy to have been directed to the eGCI course and as sure that I'll get lots of great ideas.
  10. My husband is happy to give me cooking things because he ultimately reaps the benefits -- a Boos cutting board (you don't want to know what I'd used before - it's a wonder I still have fingers left!), silicone spatula & spoon, serrated knife, Les Halles, Hot Sour Salty Sweet cookbooks & - almost the best gift - help cleaning/straightening out my kitchen cabinets and drawers
  11. 40 mph winds, 11 degrees, no school today - short ribs braised in red wine with mushrooms and pearl onions - plus time to shop for Christmas dinner
  12. Me too - but I'm not sure I want my kids 'adapting' to some of these - could be a bit embarrassing!
  13. I use tins from Specialty Bottle like "Marinade" mentioned. They come in all sizes, and you can choose either clear or solid lids. Very prompt service. I got the same size as my Dean and DeLuca tins and stuck the labels on. Stacked, organized and ready to cook
  14. Leeks simmered in olive oil are very good also. I think I'm on a leeks kick; panade of leeks & mixed greens with cantal cheese is on the menu right after Thanksgiving.
  15. Add 74 for me - plus 3 on order. Today I started reading thru this thread from the beginning and am up to p. 16. Besides being entertaining, I've also gotten a lot of ideas for books for my Christmas list! Although as you can see above, some of them are NOT going to wait until then
  16. When my kids were little, I tried to get them interested in something 'canned' but never had any luck. So much for trying to make lunch easier for me . Strange to say, my son did like Vienna sausages - shudder.
  17. No - looks nice but ditto on pain to clean & temps are never constant, sometimes it takes forever to heat to the temp I want.
  18. It's Friday, NOT QUITE after 5:00, but I just mowed the lawn in the hot sun and I'm having a vodka and tonic - slainte.
  19. Recently had ouzo for the 1st time (Lesvos) & have fallen in love. The waiter brought it neat & also a glass w/ice for me to see which way I liked it --- neat, please. Didn't bring or suggest the water. What other brands are out there that I should try? Also, I know there are anise-flavored liqueurs in other countries - any recommendations on which of those I should/must sample?
  20. Thanks Ida - that's an idea that should work. Guess I'll be going to the market this weekend.
  21. Thanks for the offer but I'm in MD. After all the "no's" on the dried variety, I've decided to 1) go to my favorite Thai place more often and 2) plant some seeds and carry the plant around my house throughout the day to stay in the sun and thrive!!
  22. You can buy it at Amazon (?), but on eBay there's a store called "Wildcrafted Herbs & Teas" that's organic & the leaves are dried whole. It's fairly cheap, around $3, & that's the one I was thinking of trying.
  23. It's very hard for me to find (& impossible for me to grow!) Thai basil, but I LOVE it when I get it fresh. Does anyone know if the dried variety is worth using? Obviously I'd need to make adjustments to some recipes, but would be willing to if I'd still get the same wonderful-tasting results.
  24. I'd be willing to go to Balto - heard there was an area of Greek restaurants there but haven't looked into it. What's there that's good? Thanks
