  1. slightly offtopic, but you started it so.. fyi: the courthouse is currently undergoing renovation.. as such, the swearing in ceremony is being held at the Association of the Bar of the City of New York courthouse on 44th..
  2. Let me offer up Bryant and Cooper as an alternative to Lugers.. different experience- still a steakhouse with house dry aged meat but they offer (in my opinion) better atmosphere, plus, it's more of a dining experience and they offer great shellfish and seafood alternatives should one not want to consume huge quantities of beef..
  3. Barazza, the Afro-Cuban bar on C and about 6th does the same.. first place i ever had a mojito, about three years ago..
  4. isn't this what everyone who ever bitches about Il Mulino bitches about??

    fish tacos

the green cactus chain out on long island has the best fish tacos that i've had in ny.. in a pinch zarella's, in grand central station, will barely satisfy a craving.. the nyc branch of maui taco doesn't do it for me.. komodo, over on A, has a decent asian-mexian fusion taco.. i prefer my fish tacos to be a battered, fried piece of fish, in a soft corn tortilla, with shredded cabbage, some sort of creamy sauce, a lime squeeed over them, and maybe a couple of tomatoes..
  6. i'd say it's heads and shoulders above sandobe.. really not even a close comparison..
  7. you near john street bar and grill?? pretty good burger, cooked as you like it, although they do tend towards the rarer side.. it's $3.50 with potato chips, another two bucks to add their home made fries which are usually worth it.. not corner bistro/mc donalds style frites though.. more of a squared off steak fry.. their buns are delivered bakery fresh throughout the week, and are burger buns, not oversized brioche style rolls which i can't stand with my burger.. it's not worth travelling more than a block or two for, but it's in my neighborhood, possibly yours??
  8. there's zaragoze deli on a and 12th or so that has a bunch of products.. not worth a trip just for it, but if you're in the neighborhood.. they have great tacos in the back as well.. on amsterdam, between 103rd and 104th is a larger and better stocked mexican grocer that has fresh tortillas, meats, cheeses, etc.. walking up amsterdam, until at least 110th you'll pass at least half a dozen mexican grocers as well..
  9. Fish, on bleecker, has an oyster special.. something like $8 for half a dozen oysters and a beer or glass of house wine.. can't remember if it's happy hour only or all the time at the bar.. http://www.menupages.com/restaurantdetails...d=0&cuisineid=0
  10. so we had dinner here last night.. i don't think i got it.. there was nothing wrong with any aspect of the meal, but nothing that, in my mind, elevated it to a three star dining experience.. the food was fine.. the service was good.. the place was br guest style generic chic.. i really could have been anywhere once inside.. we sat upstairs in the back corner looking out on the entire room.. while we were literally next to a doorway, we were pretty happy with the location, as we were seperated from the banquet that ran the length of the room and seated everyone, literally, right next to each other.. the waiter was great, knew the entire menu, the specials, the wine, etc.. in fact the service staff was great throughout the meal.. the bread comes with the previously discussed white bean spread.. it was like a thinner version of hummus.. it would have been improved immensely by not pureeing the beans, a la, po and babbo.. the parmegiano crisps were cold and nothing great.. we had the grilled octopus and the scallops for appetizers.. for mains we had the pasta with lobster and the garganelli.. they were fine.. nothing really outstanding though.. for dessert we had the blueberry tort and the semifreddo.. the semifreddo was great.. the blueberry was forgettable, really lacking any true flavor.. the highlight of the meal was the chocolate that they sent us home with.. mind you, i didn't dislike any part of the meal.. the wow factor just wasn't there.. i don't think we set an overly high expectation for the place.. nor did we go in looking to dislike it.. it just seemed too polished and generic for me without any character of its own..
  11. three letters for you: NYU that being said, i think that the chain aspect is probably the only thing that makes chipotle any worse than san loco..
  12. The food at 'the truck' is fantastic and very reasonably priced. I used to walk from CU at least twice per week for it. The only bad thing is that there's no place in the area for one to comfortably sit. Get the taco the sopes are a relatively new addition to the menu and pretty damn good as well..
  13. fyi: they hollow out limes, fill them with tequila and then float the extra shots in their margaritas..
  14. that's interesting.. i wonder if the owner of salon mexico on 26th knows about this.. seeing his passion in the food his kitchen prepares, i'd be suprosed if he didn't make a stink about this..
  15. is it really? then they changed their name yet again. it was something after Los Dos Rancheros. i miss the days of going to LDR for "cheap tacos" and then hitting the bellevue across the street til all hours. a perfect night. Yes, really. I'm looking at a takeout menu right now. I've found the tacos to be on the dry side, but their enchiladas mole is surpringly tasty. Authentic, I don't know. no its not.. Salon Mexico is a higher end mexican located on 26th between 3rd and lex.. http://www.salonmexiconyc.com
  16. in the east village there's Zaragoza deli, on A and 12th or 13th.. it's a tiny hole in the wall with a grill in the back that serves up decent tacos, etc.. the meats vary based on the day and the availability.. there's also a full fledged tacqueria on Avenue C, somewhere between 10th street and 14th street.. on the west side of the street.. i prefer this place over Zaragoza, because they offer seating, etc. and it's still a two dollar taco kind of spot.. a newish mexican place just opened up on houston and b or c, but i haven't been to check it out yet.. i'd skip the mexican place on the corner of 12th and A, although some do like it, i find the food and atmosphere there miserable.. On the lower East Side there is Cafe El Portal, on Elizabeth, a couple blocks north of Spring that's decent.. certainly better than Lupe's, which is on 6th avenue a few blocks north of Canal, around Watts Street.. there is the taco truck on 96th and broadway in the evenings.. good street food tacos, tortas, flautas, etc.. there's another truck that parks on the corner of 104th and broadway, but its hours are more sporadic.. the same truck can often be found on 97th and 1st or 2nd avenue during the week until around 3 p.m.; sadly the taco trucks that used to be a fixture on 14th street on the weekends are no longer there.. Moving towards the higher end, I'm not really a huge fan of Rosa Mexicana, Maya, etc.. I have recently enjoyed a great meal at Salon Mexico.. inventive Mexican, good amount of seafood choices.. the space isn't as luxurious as Rosa is, but i like the low key environment, great food, and the huge tequila selection..
  17. Marie's Chunky Blue Cheese is always in my fridge.. when i'm lucky and they have Super Chunky it's there too.. but that's more of a dip..

    Triangolo

we've hased out the il bagatto attitude and failure to stand by their reservations issue before so i won't go into it.. sufficient to say that they wouldn't have been so accomodating of you're friends' lateness.. lavagna is great.. my favorite east village italian.. they take reservations and are pretty good about honoring them in a timely manner.. and letting you sit and chill while the rest of your party arrives.. it's under a hundred bucks per couple..

    Delivery Pizza

i'm big on the reheat.. lombardi's pizza happens to have the biggest delivery zone in nyc.. the fact that they make a pretty damn good coal brick oven pie, and deliver to my otherwise food deprived neighborhood qualifies them for sainthood in my book.. anyway, my routine is to order the pizza and preheat the oven to 450 at the same time.. pie arrives in about 45 minutes, and the slices go in individually onto the preheated stone.. of course, the first slice out is sacrificed to the stomach god, but the rest make it into the oven in a timely manner..
  21. does this mean the guys from green day were eating in the front room again??
  22. i'll be there on sunday.. just look for the guy with plates of barbecue and the vegetarian girlfriend chomping down on some ribs..
  23. john street bar and grill has some good wings.. somehow, they wind up with an inordinate number of drumstick pieces which i prefer.. really good, handmade three dollar burgers on buns freshly baked and delivered in the morning.. bt that's talk for another message..
  24. check out newspaper sales ads from a lot of electronic stores in nyc.. at the very bottom, in the tiny little print after their id#, you'll find a notation that all prices reflect a 3% cash discount..
  25. Hmmmm... not so sure about that. I can't find any documentation, but I thought cash discounts were also illegal. Wouldn't everyone use such a loophole if that were the case? What always confused me is why gas stations can get away with charging less for cash. I wonder if the law regulates industries differently, or if states are the ones actually govern such things. state law covers this in ny.. provides that you are permitted to give a cash discount, but not charge a surcharge for credit card usage..
