  1. how much of Per Se's client base do you think egullet represents?? i'd think anticipation is building, if anything, amongst the general public.. given the spate of recent openings, and the fact that they've been mostly ubertrendy hot spots to see and be scene, with mediocre food, i'm pretty sure whenever Per Se does reopen, it'll be quickly followed by reviews noting that it was 'Worth the wait for the treat of eating in Chef Keller's restaurant..' if you don't like the way that it's been handled, don't eat there.. i've only heard of two instances, on and off this board, where they failed to notify a reservation holder.. and one of them was for later in the day of the fire.. but cut them some slack.. i can't imagine anyone is sitting on their laurels while they're closed.. it'll reopen.. we'll all get our opportunity to eat there.. we're all hopeful they'll call us like they said they would to reschedule.. in the meantime, let's enjoy the restaurants that are out there and be happy there are alternatives..
  2. Nona's Kitchen chips, available at New York area Whole Foods do it for me.. they come in a BIG paper bag.. fresh.. baked then fried.. they're almost as good (and sometimes better) than the freshly fried chips from the local mexican restaurants.. i was hooked from the moment the three year old kid ripped open and started in on one of the multiple bags his dad was loading into their shopping cart..
  3. Every time I go out to my girlfriend's, it's only there at night (not sure why at all). There's a post on here somewhere about the best post-drinking meal different people have had, and this is definitely one of mine. witht he exception of the 14th street taco trucks that used to park near 7th avenue on the weekends, all the taco trucks i know of come out at night.. i prefer the 96th and broadway truck..

    Per Se

Why is it that we make fun of early bird specials when FL = Fort Lauderdale - and not French Laundry. Perhaps I am unusual - but I like to start eating dinner between 7:30 and 8:30 - and I don't understand why I should spend more than $500 to eat at times which might be suitable for my elderly parents - or for people who are eating post-theater - as opposed to a reasonable time when I usually like to eat. i had a 7:30 reservation.. i found that if i was willing to be flexible in terms of dates, they were flexible in terms of times.. of course, this happened to work on the first day the reservation lines opened.. and it was my understanding that they were only doing a single seating the first month or so, regardless..
  5. 11 Madison Park Menu, courtesty of MenuPages.com
  6. allessandro's not there anymore.. the guy who's been making sandwiches for him for the better part of the past year is now the only one there.. i like the tuna with mozz, peppers and arugula..
  7. CLASSIC: mix hellmans mayo with a lot of dried dill, dijon mustard, salt, and a drop of garlic powder.. let meld for a few minutes while you chop the celery.. grate the carrot.. chop the jalapeno.. then mix it all together.. MELAMPO STYLE: can of yellow genova tuna in olive oil opened and spread on semolina bread, oil and all.. covered with sliced pickled cherry peppers, baby arugula, and fresh mozzarella..
  8. you're right- we're well past it.. uhhm.. but to answer your question- no matter how facetious it might have been, i'd say it's because most people aren't walking into daniel with bundles of CASH like the majority of luger's patrons are likely to be..
  9. it's the same dog.. all in the cooking.. same with Katz's, although they buy the 6 or 8 to a pound, instead of the 10 or 12 to a pound that the papaya guys use..
  10. i'm intrigued by the fact that Jim Goldman, of Brother Jimmy's fame, is the owner of the place.. i'm praying the food is better than BJ's.. and that it doesn't quickly disintegrate into the beer swilling, fishbowl drinking crowd that they manage to shoe in to Brother Jimmy's..
  11. Or pray the ATM nearby has not been emptied. Jamie and that you're not mugged walking from the atm to the place.. i've often wondered why an enterprising thug doesn't camp out by the broadway J train stop and knock off every group of guys walking over to lugers..
  12. march 17 ressie baby.. i'm keeping my fingers crossed..
  13. i didn't get that the stove had to be replaced from any of the articles that i've seen.. sure it got wet.. 'doused' in fact, but it'll dry, no??

    Moustache

i've got to side with eric on this one.. i've eaten in the east village location about a dozen times and brought in their food about twice that many times.. living down the block from them, it was a great last minute kind of spot, and the garden in the back is nice.. having since moved away, i've never craved it nor hae i travelled back for their pretty much unique food.. i love the fact that the pita comes freshly baked, from the oven to the table.. their baba and hummous was always good.. i liked the merguez sandwich and the feta and egg pastry.. and the ribs are good.. all in all,the food is pretty solid here.. i guess the reason i've never gone back is the lack of atmosphere the east village location has.. tables are piled on top of each other, but there's not the buzz you'd expect such a configuration to achieve, a la il bagatto, frank, flea market.. maybe the west village locale is different?? that said, i'd like to check out their other place, the one with the ~$30 price fixe multi-course meal, whose name i can never remember..
  15. uhhm.. great.. so, based on your 'list', you can walk into a bistro type spot on the upper east side, one spot in the middle of bumblefuck-murray hill (you WERE kidding about les halls, right?? i mean the food just basically sucks.. great, they have good fries.. good thing they're never packed so people have to wait at the non-existant bar, huh??) or go to the west village and hit un deus trois.. from what i took of your explanation "fair enough: it is a list of bistro-like places around the city which are good solid restaurants. easy to walk in & have a good meal at a reasonable price either at a table or at the bar" means to me you'd want to have a spot or two to drop in on in most neighorhoods that you'd be walking about in and decide to have a drink/meal.. so, based on your 'list' and exclusions, why would you ever leave your neighborhood?? great- selectivity rules.. at some point, a frisee salad is a fucking frisee salad.. especially when you're in soho and can walk into balthazar and sit in 20 minutes.. so you have a drink at the bar?? big deal.. at least the room isn't filled with half dead white men and their trophy women..
  16. i'm in the minority that thinks bringing junk into the movies is wrong.. here's the thing- your local theatre makes no money off your ticket price for the first week to three weeks of the run.. like maybe .10 on the dollar goes to them, and it doesn't really even cover costs.. the smaller the theatre (i.e., small independent local joint) the less money they make 'cause they can't negotiate a great deal like the big chains do.. so they jack up the price of concessions to make money.. your bringing in of the same stuff that they sell at the concession stand is being cheap and will wind up putting your movie theatre out of business.. if you want the popcorn/reese's/goobers, show some support.. now i can understand if you haven't eaten a meal and don't want to eat the junk they sell, or eat healthy or on an otherwise controlled diet that doesn't allow for concession stand munching, but come on folks.. it's not the same as a breath mint or gum.. you want the crap.. pay for it.. ever hear a man who wasn't cheap begin a sentence with "I'm not a cheap guy, but..."

    Megu

At dinner the other night, the topic of Megu came up.. i found one link about it's impending opening a few months ago, but nothing more.. from the hipguide (click for complete blurb): anyone know anything??? 13,000 square feet?? 25 chefs?? someone here has to know something.

    Geisha

kazuo's sushi is, in my opinion, well worth whatever you have to go through to get it.. kind of like jumping through the hoops to get a reservation at jewel bako back when he was there.. go on a tuesday or wednesday if you're willing to kick out the money..
  19. sparks has private rooms for groups of your size.. they'll do the standard menu or let you price fixe it with a pretty large range of options.. if you're looking for a private surrounding, this is the way to go.. cite can accomodate big groups.. it's noisy and boisterous and people get drunk pretty quickly.. this is where i go for my birthday dinners.. just don't let them give you a table in the grill.. not as pretty.. for next next few weeks, cite is pouring some (relatively) higher end wines..
  20. i'm thinking that the pricing mentioned above is being extrapolated from the french laundry website.. seeing as how http://www.perseny.com is not functioning as yet, and the recording is devoid of any information regarding price, i'd be interested in knowing if anyone actually asked what the pricing is like.. me, i figure it's cheaper than flying out to cali for dinner at french laundry..
  21. just got through.. maybe half an hour on redial?? 7:30 on a thursday, about six weeks out.. nice people..
  22. so i'm assuming this one won't be on opentable anytime soon..
  23. you're correct.. they'll only reserve tables in the back room, unless you're a large group, in which case they'll sometimes reserve the very front tables in the front room for you.. front room is walk in, first come first served.. great at 5 on a sunday.. packed and 'lively' on a friday a nine.. and the front room is always loud.. which is why i love it for early dates.. i love lupa for its accessibility.. you'll wait an hour for a table, but don't have to plan it out 30 days in advance.. kind of like your corner italian red sauce joint..
  24. relax.. it was more of a jesting post, although upon my rereading of it, doesn't come across that way.. reservation policy is, i'm pretty sure, the same as at babo.. 30 days in advance.. if you want to be there, call at 10 a.m. 30 days before and you should get in.. otherwise, you wait with the masses.. and, for the record, whenever i've been it's been tight at the bar but the crowd outside has been waiting for tomoe next door.. of course, ymmv..
  25. difficulty in getting a table?? like, showing up, giving your name, and having a couple of drinks at the bar or across the street and coming back in an hour?? i like Lupa.. the food is really good, the atmosphere is loud and gives it an energy in the front room that the back lacks.. it's a pretty spontaneouous outing for me.. often preceeded by a few cocktails in the neighborhood and some indecisiveness over where to eat..
