  1. i would have to agree with katie. although he may have significantly overreached from a business viewpoint with avenue b on the heels of fishmarket, the tales of neil stein's untimely demise are grossly exaggerated.
  2. Yes, that's it. Next time I have my teeth cleaned is revenge time. A chopped liver sandwich w/ raw onions before the appointment. Maybe a char dog from wiener's circle too. that's quite the creative revenge. you should throw some other stinkers in there. maybe chew on some garlic to settle your stomach after the sandwich.
  3. point of fact, or rather question of fact: what the hell are eyeteeth?
  4. liaodong is in manchuria, right? the geography memory ain't what it used to be.
  5. not as slow as rich. you should see him waddle to the bar to get either another beer or the glass of water in between.
  6. oh, that. in that case, i didn't fully get the joke. i was thinking along different lines.
  7. what kind of cheap vodka? are any of them neutral and clean? or might i have to go the route jason is suggesting? in that case absolut i would guess. although vodkaphiles.com lists smirnoff red label 80 as being relatively neutral and cheap. r ight now, that's my leading contender as far as vodka choice. as far as flavors, i'll test various options. the jolly ranchers one is probably at least one of the three, just b/c it's so interesting. i'm thinking anise might be another, although not sure i want it that sweet. i'm also thinking about an asian fruit perhaps, just to see how it would come out. one of my favorites is longan, although i'm not sure the flavor would come out. might be worth doing a mini batch of that. hmm, might hafta buy more canning jars.
  8. i was just there today. there is a statue? i will have to look around. i was looking at the buildings more. my bad.
  9. menton, you left out lunch at the terminal. plus, post drinking late night snack down in Chinatown. plus, the actual drinking after the fork dinner. i think holly's fibbing about the statue.
  10. mark, what's the name of the place? i called the 2 local liquor chains around here and they don't have it. alternatively, is there any other one close to that price and smoothness? you didn't mention odor and taste, but i assume they're non existent with the poland spring?
  11. if i can get to one of these egullet shindigs around the country, i was thinking of what i wanted to bring. beverages, non-alcoholic and alcoholic seemed interesting to me, and I had spoke to someone about infusing vodka. so, now I'm planning on infusing some vodkas. was thinking of buying a cheap vodka and infusing it. went out and bought 3 canners' jars today. so i figure i'll do 3. the questions are: any recommendations on the vodka choice? been a while since i've had cheap plastic bottle type vodka but might go that route. but are they really non-odor and non-taste? was also thinking of just getting a bottle of smirnoff 80 proof (red label?) and using that. any recommendations on what to infuse it with? obviously flavors that I like would be good, but looking for other flavors that I might like that I might not think of otherwise. So, fire away. any recommendations from people who've done it before? i was planning on just throwing the ingredient in the bottom of the jar, dumping the vodka on top, sealing the bottle until i feel like opening it for something. should i make it more complicated than that?
  12. it amazes me that we've got nine pages talking about this and we're five months out. such is the awesome power of the varmint.
  13. 'nuff said. let that roll around in your head for a while. let it run around in your brain for that last hour before you fall asleep every night. then make that choice. yea or nay?
  14. correction, between Provencal and Lyonnais, I believe it should be.
  15. exactly. i believe that is the next wave. it has already started, as you mentioned, but will continue and add both depth and breadth. we're only really startng to differentiate between Provencal and Lyon, etc. and between Northern and Southern Italian.
  16. You got sharp eyes there, awbrig! The bartender kept playing peek-a-boo, and I had to ask the church ladies to summon somebody so we could get our wine. I think they were still getting the kinks out; there weren't any lamb shanks there either. All the more reason to head over there again tonight... The lamb shanks were the highlight of the evening for me. No wait, the spanakopita was. No wait, the favas and artichokes were. No wait, the pastries were. (I went with several friends--we were supposed to go out for drinks but I convinced them to go to there instead--I don't think I saw you guys, judging from the pic, but we went about an hour after you said to meet). you mighta caught us, jas. we didn't leave til about 8:00 or 8:15. katbert, don't worry there is a significant dessert selection for you to devour. the entrees were athenian chicken, lamb shank, salmon sauteed with garlic and something else, pasticchio, moussaka. i'm actually gooing back for lunch in a few.
  17. yea, opposite side of pond from jon, but i gotta take some time to digest all that. comments later.
  18. quick rundown of people: katieloeb herbacidal andrew fenton lisa1349 + 1 (what's with the number---don't even tell me the year you were born :-) holly moore mrbigjas (possible) more are welcome!
  19. where is she tending? we can conceivably drop in later tonight after greek festival. we are looking for a place to treat alcohol abuse.
  20. Sorry, missed this one in the general flurry. I was distracted by my disappointment at being left off the "chicks" list. I didn't know, K - I swear I didn't know... Okay, let's see, where were we? There's K (for Katherine? Katy? Kitsy? Kandee? Kelly?) Purvis and Claire and Maggie and Marlene and Katie L and Heather and Malawry and Rachel and... and... have I left anyone else out? And all the fun guys, too. Oh, and and Holly, I'm looking forward to meeting you and filling you up with some good ol' Southern Hospitality. I am sure you can use some. I've been concerned about your health, having recently heard that you had been "stricken" with something or another. holly is a fellow, not a lady. just thought that might be relevant.
  21. yea, even so, she should have the basic eye for what looks nice. regardless of whether she designed it or had somebody design it, she should have had final approval.
  22. I note the same thing in Minneapolis with the Hmong population. The parents and grandparents, raised "in thehills" are far smaller than their chidren and grandchildren, the latter born and raised in the U. S. Question: I know that when I lived in Bangkok, delivery food (as in noodle, fruit, stir-fry, etc. carts traversing the streets, ringing their bells, stopping at houses as residents trundled out with their bowls; this would not be deliver of the "phone for pizza" variety) was a way of life. Does this exist in China? I remember well how much my sister and I loved the nights my parents were out at a party and we'd wait for a particular bell and run out with our bowls for baa mi. well, definitely. here in the US more sugar in everything, more than asians are used to. they always gain weight. i've seen it in my family, others in chinatown, etc. i'm not aware of that kind of delivery being available in china, at least not in the various places I've been (see above post).
  23. at this point, katie, andrew and I plan to be there. perhaps 6:45 ish? We were thinking about how to identify us. What about togas? Andrew, you take the lead on this. Alternatively, we could just hang out at the front gates of the church.
