  1. Hmmmm....

Cross MST3K and "$40 a Day with Rachel Ray"...

Mutant food-travel spawn of the demon seed?

Maybe.  It'd definitely be funnier than s**t.

I smell a possible new topic: "FN Shows Most Amenable to MST3K Treatment." (The challenge, of course, will be to keep it relevant to food and eGullet, as opposed to totally spinning off on quirks of the host, etc.). I personally don't have the bandwidth to start such a topic, but I'm not above inciting someone else ...

    I hereby nominate "Unwrapped"!

  2. "Daughter was fine after spewing, and even blew him kisses."

    Beautiful! Lmao

Don't we all wish we could blow kisses at people who caught our yuck?

Thank goodness I have no spewy-spilly type of stories to tell, but here goes:

I like wine. I am not in the economic bracket that affords long studies of wine, or sampling of expensive vintages. But I try my best to learn and to taste what I can when I can afford it.

Okay, so keep in mind I'm a vino newbie.

Two different times at restaurants with my ex, I ordered a cabernet sauvignon. Because I like white wine, and I figured it was just like a sauvignon blanc. Cuz.....well.....sauvignon!

    Right.

Boy did I feel like a dork when I got a glass of red and said "but I ordered a white"

Ex was no wine-expert either, but he did like to feel superior.

    Wheeee.

  3. The Naked Chef?! We don't keep a TV, so I'm not sure of this. But I believe that's what I was told.

    Miriam

Actually, I believe it is Bob Blumenthal (not sure of last name) - the guy who drove around the country in a van shaped like a toaster to promote his book - who first mentionned this method. Well, that's where *I* first heard of it anyway.....

I wonder if Electrosol makes a good marinade?

  4. This is an interesting question. I'm curious to see other EG'ers answers. I've never had a meal that went beyond the general timeframe of an hour.

I don't think I'd want to be at the table much longer than that. For one thing, I imagine it promotes eating after you're full. In any case, I'd rather lounge in a chair, and have a less structured setting to chat with my fellow guests, than be in a formal dining setting for too long.

  5. I agree with many here who said they don't like thick/creamy soups in the heat. I'll add chili and burritos to that list. Too much density feels bad when the humidity is pressing on you all day (and often night). Chocolate cake, or most types of cake really, are a no-go too.

Thinking back, my favorites of summer: corn on the cob, hotdogs/hamburgs on the grill, ice cream/sorbet, watermelon/honeydew, cherries(!)

I remember my mom used to make great tomato, lettuce and mayo sandwiches on toasted wheat bread. Big wet sweet slices of Tom, and crispcool iceberg lettuce...*sigh*That is the bee's knees.

More recently, back in Toronto I would end up buying an ice blended coffee almost every day in the summer heat. And I ate Korean fairly frequently.

  6. Megan, you don't like cheese???? Really?  Any cheese or just pre-grated fake cheddar cheese?

Okay...we went to Bellingham yesterday and we picked one up to poke at and it was a bit grizzly.  The gravy is different in the US than it is here in Canada and it's not as good.  The corn is tough...the cheese adds nothing but fat...and the chicken nuggets were not good.  In spite of harbouring a secret love of instant mashed potatoes it was just not something we wanted to eat.  Plus I can't eat mashed potatoes without orange salt, so that put a damper on things as my car stash of the stuff was empty.

"Orange salt"? I've never heard of such a thing - is it actually orange flavoured?

  7. While visiting Vancouver this past week, I had lunch at Oysi Oysi 2 days in a row. I really enjoyed it. Not bad prices, alot of variety on the menu, relaxed and quiet atmosphere, and friendly staff.

Lunch Day 1: Raw Oysters, Salmon Sashimi, Baked Oysters.

Lunch Day 2: Raw Oysters, Lunch Combo A (miso soup, choice of tempura shrimp and yam or vegetable, choice of chicken or beef teriyaki, choice of sashimi or california rolls - all for $7.95)

It was a pleasure, though both times it was way too much to finish.

    I reccommend it:

  8. At Third street and Wilshire, just across from the Barnes and Noble, is a restaurant called "Monsoon" that I like. It's an asian fusion place. And the restaurant has a really interesting decor.

I realize you said you eat later than most, but just so you know - they have a reasonably-priced happy hour menu which features the Yummiest Egglant dish.

    I reccommend it.

  9. I could not stop cringing whenever they showed Stephen talking down to the guests. And I love how he handed one table a scorecard and said "We appreciate all your compliments" or something to that effect. What a presumptuous jerk. Obviously, he's got some incecurity issues.

Dave.....I think Dave has a drinking problem. He seems to have fuzzy judgement, and is emotional as hell - which is very unprofessional in front of the judges.

I hope Dave wins, I do think he's good, and he has a good personality when he's not melting down.

It was nice to see Ted on the show. Is Queer Eye cancelled or something, I haven't heard of new episodes in Ages?

  10. I miss family dinners in general. We didn't have regular Sunday dinners, but we would get together for birthdays and christmas for a while. I think they stopped happening altogether about the time I was 12.

I very much hope that, whenever/however my own family forms, I am able to reinstitute the 'sunday dinner' tradition. And board games! It's like twisting arms to try and get my friends into playing them.

    Great article. Very heartwarming.
