  1. They are indeed a franchise. A franchise that has gone through an unfortunate metamorphosis (sp?) becoming more cookie-cutter and bland than before. I prefer The Dutch Wooden Shoe Cafe ... 17th & Cambie. Esentially the same thing, but with that dark attitude reserved for foggy mornings after the night before. Have the Salami-hash Pannekoek with Hollandaise. I can feel my arteries clogging as I type the words ... A.

  4. First off Mr. Maw, I think it rather uncouth of you to hijack the thread ... although if you can foot the bill I'm sure all will be forgiven. Second, I've decided on Brasa for Friday. "J" and I will do the Sitting Room solo on Saturday, followed by dinner at Crow. Third, a 3-1 win is not what I would call a thrashing, as much as I would like to. I'm still paying for my Weber Bullet! I may be talked into smuggling back some lamb prosciutto however. Speaking of Salumi ... when are they open? Their web site is what Vancouverites refer to as web-site-lite. I understand it's Tues-Friday 11-3. We may have to come down early! A.
  5. One of our family favorites is a recipe contibuted to a fund-raiser cookbook by former BC Premier Dave Barret ... Grilled Salmon with Dill Aioli. Very simple and really delicious! My personal favorite ... Whole fish, bone in, stuffed with lemon slices, drizzled with s&p, grilled over charcoal. Wild Pacific salmon is best left to stand on its own. A.

  7. Yeah! That was me - I really do like their savory pies. But barolo, linking it to the Georgia Straight - ack - they are dead to me! But - do click the link to the Georgia Straight today - the 'Single of the Week' looks suspicously like a certain bespectacled forum host. Daddy A - there are easier ways to get a side dish. Careful Canucklehead ... my wife lurks these hallowed halls! BTW, I look NOTHING like the "Single of the Week" apart from shorn head and glasses (his are butt ugly!) Kiwi Pie Company product will also (if not already) be available at Swangard Stadium for Vancouver Whitecaps' games! Cummon everyone! White is the colour, soccer is the game .... A.
  8. Thanks everyone for the rec's so far! Make sure you pop into the Vancouver, BC & Western Canada forum anytime you're up our way so I can return the favour! I forgot that I had already boomarked The Sitting Room ... place looks pretty inviting, and it's MUCH closer to the hotel (not an issue, but nice). I'm thinking The Sitting Room instead of Brasa. I think we'll pass on Lark this time for the simple reason that Crow is MUCH closer (again, not an issue, but nice ). Did I mention we LIKE walking ... just not that far ? Does Crow do reservations? If not, when's the best time to go. Outside of that, I think Matt's is in order, as will be 10 Mercer as we've done it before and really liked it ... good sized martinis! Speaking of which ... what's the poop on Tini Big's? Saw it on some schlocky Top 5 show on FN and thought it looked kitchy enough to be interesting. Thanks again A.
  9. Oh, I'll back up that shameless plug! One of the nicest breakfasts I've had in a while was at Artigiano about 6 weeks ago. Latte, croque monsieur, fried taters and the Globe & Mail. Just needed few people in the place so I could spread out! A.
  10. This is a really interesting discussion, and I'm really looking forward to hearing more at C next month ... BUT (you knew that was coming didn't you?) This is the Vancouver, BC & Western Canada forum. While this thread started off speaking to the issue of sustainability in BC, it's now drifting into "General" territory. If we can add to this discussion as to how these issues affect our region only, let's hear about it.   11. My wife & I are coming down to Seattle May 13-15, and we'll be staying at The Inn at Queen Anne (505 First Ave North). We'd prefer not to drive anywhere as we intend to consume a bottle or two of local grape ... although short cab rides are OK. Based on some of the more recent threads, here's a short list: Brasa (I hear Happy Hour is worthwhile ) Cascadia Lola Lark We're not looking to break the bank (hell, we're still paying 25 cents on the dollar!) but want something "nice." Anything we're missing or that shouldn't be on the list? Tapas, small plates, martinis, local wine/ingredients ... all a plus.. Thanks in advance. A.
  12. Another weekend, another chance to feed my face! Thursday lunch was at Ocean 6 Seveteen. I really hope this location is kind to the new tenants. Easily one of the nicest decks in the city! Justin had a grilled chicken sandwich and fries, I had a bowl of chilled tomato soup and the salmon/risotto cakes. Really really nice! The soup was not as much like gaspacho as I was expecting, but was perfectly refeshing. The risotto cakes were nice and crispy, and were filled with creme fraiche (or something like it ... didn't take notes ). Salad of pea sprouts in a tangy citrus vinaigrette on the side. Great lunch. Phnom Penh for lunch with the Lunch Mafia on Friday. Mooshmouse et al can fill in the details I missed ... Garlic Squid, Garlic Chicken Wings, Butter Chicken, Papaya Salad, Cambodian Noodles, some vegetable matter Ling was afraid of ... all washed down with Vietnamese Iced Coffee. As good as Phnom Pehn was at my first visit, it was even better with a larger group. The Mill Friday after work in an ever-ending quest to find the best deck in the Lower Mainland. The Mill doesn't have a deck so much as it has a vast portion of the Seawall on which it is allowed to place tables and chairs ... and yes, umbrellas! Being follically challenged, coverage is important. The umbrellas however were not required as the towers in the area did a great job of blocking out the sun. As warm as it was, the shadows cast by the towers had most on the deck looking fro sweatshirts, and one table even asked if the restaurant had blankets! The food? Not much to say .. nachos, mushroom caps, wings, humous ... all very average. The Moosh's had salmon and halibut entres which they appeared to enjoy. Beers were cold, wine was warm-ish. The service was humourous (not in a good way), and provided us with an evening of entertainment. Our server seemed quite perplexed when "J" asked if we had a wine list. "Oh! You want to SEE it!" When she returned with the list, she flopped it down on the tabel, waved her hand at it and said "wine". Now I don't expect a sommelier, but indifference is another story. Elixir for breakfast on Saturday morning before my showroom day. Nice room, especially when it's not crowded with people hoping to catch a glimpse of Tony Bourdain Wasn't too impressed with the coffee, but everything else was fine. Not as good as Provence Marinaside IMO, but a good start to the day nonetheless. A.
  13. Any idea who's doing her kitchen Jamie? Her Yaletown location used cabinets from her neighbours at Showcase. On W 2nd she'll be near the Redl showroom. As she hasn't come to see me, I have to speculate Redl got the job. A.
  14. AHEM! Ling, don't let them bully you into an apology! Your experience is your experience. My experience is similar, restaurants are reluctant to cook steaks that rare. I will agree however that the hanger I had at HSG just after DOV was almost moo-ing. Chef Fowke, unless you cooked my hanger that night, I've never had the pleasure of eating your cooking. Let's remedy that soon shall we? A.

    peppyre's questions about green peppercorn sauce reminded me of dinner last Wednesday ... Hanger Steak & Green Peppercorn Sauce on Orecchiette The package on the right is the remaining peppercorns. The green on the plate is the last of an avacado ... we're very low on veggies. A.
  16. That's too wierd ... I had hanger on Wednesday night, and also wanted the same sauce! Granted, my peppercorns were fresh, but stilll ... wierd. I found a couple recipes on Epicurious (nothing on RecipeGullet ), but they all invovled pan-fying the steaks to get the jus, and then degalzing, etc etc AS I was grilling, there wasn't going to be any jus, per se. I suppose you could use the jus that collected as you let the steak rest after you grilled it. Beef stock? I'm grasping at straws ... I ended up making a green peppercorn cream sauce for some pasta and had it as a side.
  17. You a Moody girl Snacky? I love Pajo's! Spent many a swim meet at the pool in Rocky Point Park. I told Andreas at Go Fish! to check out Pajo's cones as an idea for his place. Funny thing, he lives in PM and had never been to Pajo's.Another addition to the waterfront scene ... The Mill Bistro - Never been ... nice views. A.
  18. Aren't the City Cooks episodes taped ahead of time? Wife & I were at Amuse for a tasting during Wine Fest and the Abdel said things were doing "well" (take that for what it's worth). A lot can happen in a couple months. A.

  21. Regarding cooktop size ... it depends on what kind of cooktop you're looking at - a drop-in, or range-top. When looking at a drop-in, pay attention to where the knobs are. A 30" cooktop can effectively become a 24" cooktop if the knobs run down the side [Example - CLICK]. In this situation, I like to use a 36" top whenever possible. Of course, a range-top [Example - CLICK] has all the knobs on the front, thus freeing the entire surface for cooking. Reason for Wolf? One word - simmer. Wolf offers the only true simmer (unless things have changed recently) in the market. Others offer a simmer feature, but the flame turns off and on to maintain the lower heat. Wolf's simmer is a separate, smaller burner that remains on. Better control. A.
  22. The Bins (there are two of them) are a couple of my favorite places in Vancouver. You need to get there early (5-6ish) or wait for a seat as they are quite small. Room is loud and crowded, but I really like the food. Small plates, decent wine list. However, based on the list of Seattle places you provided, other than Wild Ginger (based on reviews only - never been myself), I don't see a fit. I'd second Fiction, Fennie's, Lumiere if you want fancy, West (which I would do instead of Lumiere), C is a great choice for Waterfront-like dining, Chambar, Happa Izakaya ... how long are you here for? I'll take you up on that offer soon. Wife & I are coming down May 13-15 A.
  23. Just finished reading the article (Started subscribing on-line! How geeky is that?) What I find interesting is how they neglect to mention the people on eGullet who supported his decision. I guess the negative angle makes for better press. Badiane, Chef Feenie has been encouraged to join eGullet. However, based on some recent posts, it seems a bit like inviting a Christian into the lion's den, just so we can find out how he feels as he's being eaten. I agree with your point ... if you want to join the discussion, then join it. A.
