  1. (Who said anything about them being better?) And I for one am glad you've decided that anybody with any sort of celebrity is forbidden to make any choices that topple them from whatever pedestal you or society has placed them. God knows Feenie isn't human. No, he's an Iron Chef! The culinary master, just one step down from Pope Benedict XVI ... Sorry, sarcasm doesn't work well online ... A.
  2. I once spent 4 days working my way through a St Honoré cake after a break up. Just cream puffs and coffee. I was soooooooo handsome afterwards, especially my complection! A.
  3. Amen. I saw an interview an number of years ago with the late-great Freddie Mercury (singer for Queen). The reporter had asked him what he thought about critics who accused him of "selling out" on their latest album. His reply: "What the f**k do they think I do for a living? I sell records! Technically, everything I do is "selling out." If this gets Feenies out to Burnaby sooner, bring it on! A.
  4. Um ... does anybody have anything to say about Chambar? There's a perfectly good thread over HERE (CLICKSTER) about bringing birthday cakes, hangar steaks, and McCoffee into restaurants. Geez eatbc, now I'm grumpy. A.
  5. You'll be able to answer that yourself when the $18 soap dispenser gunks up and no longer dispenses. Having said that, I've had $45 Grohe Dispensers do the same thing, but the cheaper ones seem to be more likely to fail. A.
  6. The West Van Library has a f**king fireplace??? Unbe-frickin-lievable! Heaven forbid tax money goes to buy ... um ... say books? Or for a raise for grossly underpaid librarians ... right Andrew? A.
  7. Guys, guys, guys ... I am secure enough in my masculinity that I can handle the odd tea cake. Besides, if it makes "J" happy for an afternoon, then it frees me up for the occaisional testosterone bing with the guys. It's not whether you win or lose, but how you play the game ... A.
  8. Won't walnut oil go rancid eventually? ← Yes it will. Use mineral oil, or the linseed oil. The information found at the John Boos site (posted upthread) is as good as any I've found. You should also get yourself a scraper, and use it every day (see John Boos for more info) A.
  9. This is what frightens me. Not the testing, or even the disease (although scary in their own right) but the lack of coverage. IMO, the story now is not the supposed cover-up of the positive tests in 1997, but the fact that there was/is virtually no coverage of the story in the American media. The public can't rise up against something that doesn't "exist." I expect this sort of media manipulation from sources like Fox News, but I had hoped for better from other sources. A.

    Dinner! 2005

The weather hasn't really been warm enough for me to fire up the smoker lately. But last week I was jonesing for some chicken, and the kids were willing assistants. Chicken rubbed down and ready to go. Rub recipe came from Ron Shewchuck's Barbecue Secrets - the recipe was for Fajitas, but we had not tortillas so we improvised. The boys and Gromit making sure the meat is safe! Smoked chicken!! 1/2 went for dinner, the other half is in the freezer for when the next craving hits. Chicken was served with a salad (organic baby greens evoo & balsamic), shitake mushroom risotto and home made foccacia. Wine was home made Borolo A.
  11. Not to be outdone by Mooshmouse & the High-Tea Triad, "J" and I spent this afternoon at the very exclusive Our Backyard Garden. Cappucino and Persian sweets were the fare, and it was so nice we were able to take full advantage of the patio. The coffee was excellent ... pulled by a master Norwegian barista of impecable talent (although he did look as though his shaved head could use a good once-over with a blade ). Pastries, we were told, came from Sena Bakery (3982 Hastings Street, Burnaby.) Much use of pistacio and honey, even some philo in there as well. The coffee was needed to cut through the richness. Many items were reminiscent of Indian sweets, which was just fine by us! Grand total: $8.50 and there's still some left in our fridge. A.
  12. My head hurts. Seriously, I have a huge bruise on my forehead from smashing it against my desk after reading this tripe! The benefits from nuclear fission outweigh the drawbacks? I'm sure the folks who "survived" Horoshima, Nagasaki, Chernobyl might disagree with you. But hey, I'm sure they're relieved that 20% of the world gets cheap electricity. We make mistakes and learn from them right? Give me a foot-dragger over a profit taker anyday. It doesn't take a genius to figure out which one has the best interest of the human race at heart. A.
  13. Never thought to ask ... too busy stuffing my face Next visit. A.
  14. Jeez Bob! You know them's fightin' words around here! I've never eaten Chinese food in TO, so I can't make the comparison. But all Asian cuisines are well-represented in Vancouver. Understand that Vancouver is very much NOT Toronto or Montreal insofar as food is concerned. Our influences are much different. Chef Fowke came up with the best description of Vancouver I've heard yet ... calling it the "Wild West" of Canadian cuisine. If I was to suggest one place for you to visit, a place that you would kick yourself for missing, it would be Go Fish! (nobody here will be surprised at that coming from me ) Full disclosure: I have absolutely no connection to Go Fish! whatsoever, I just really like the food. The fish & chips, grilled salmon and oyster po'boy are all must try's. But IMO, I'd go for the soup alone. Go Fish! is also near what I consider to be the Foodie highlight of Vancouver .... Granville Island. Also near-by is Patisserie LeBeau for gaufres, and Les Amis du Fromage for, um, cheese. Sorry about the lack of links ... I'm on my way to work .... Hope this helps. A.
  15. I've never been to the Carribean, so I have no frame of reference ... but I liked the goat curry and patties at Riddum & Spice on Commercial Drive ... at about 4th I believe. A.
  16. The only thing I ever wanted from my Grandma's estate (she passed away about 5 years ago now) was this: The World's Greatest Pepper Mill! I still hear her chuckling every time I use it. A.
  17. This might need its own topic ... Today in the Georgia Straight, Angella Murrils reporting on okonomiyaki at Modern Club. Weren't we just talking about this? Makes me wonder who the reviewers are "going by". A.
  18. Nothin' wrong with mayo on almost anything! For a lunchy atmosphere ... um, this may be a stoopid question, but are they open for LUNCH? I have a job going right around the corner from them and am always looking for lunch options (ask anyone ) A.
  19. Found a couple US sites with references to the situation: CommonDreams.com LA.Indymedia.Org So far they're all re-reporting the CBC report. A.
  20. Okay, NOW I'm really interested!! A.
  21. How about foodies who happen to be skinny like yours truly? Soba ← Or Ling for that matter. What the hell does this have to do with the article? I understand people not "getting" this woman, just the same as I understand people not "getting" women who chose not to have children. Live and let live fer crissake! A.
  22. I'm in, but sans liquor. We'll be taking the kids. Then again, I've never needed liquor to hurl abuse. Speaking of which, the BC Salmon Farmer's Association will be there (keep an open mind, keep an open mind ...) On a serious note, I'm interested in checking out the Chili and Barbecue Festival taking place during the show, and learning a new trick or two. Eat Vancouver Web Page (CLICK) A.
  23. Thanks for bringing things back OT Xando ... and your points are excellent. I often wonder what exactly qualifies as "good design" sometimes. To me it has as much to do with funtionality as it does with aethetics. Case in point - Rangoli. For the record, I LOVE THIS PLACE. Design wise, it is eye-barfi indeed, but my ass in forever numb when I lunch there (I'm also on the record as stating the seats at Rangoli are the most uncomforatble in Vancouver -sorry Vikram ). Having said that, congrats are still in order to AFTERglow ... success-laden as they are. A.
  24. I had to go back and have a look at your latest punch-list. Sho 'nuff "Install Cabinet Knobs" was there! Sorry, occupasional hazard ... it was the first thing I noticed. How ARE you opening the cabinets BTW?? Nice range dude. A.
  25. Okay, it should be noted that I am a SON and a FATHER, thus I was breaking no "rules" by cooking on Mother's Day Don't get me started on Father's Day A.
