  1. I'm currently reading a non foodie book but recently read "A Meal Observed" which is a really wonderful story about the famed restaurant Taillevent in Paris.
  2. Spent almost 3 weeks in northern Spain last month and absolutely agree about Martin Berasategui. We loved our dinner at Kursaal which was not as spendy as Arzak but more than Can Majo in Barcelona. Speaking of Barcelona please try to go to Cal Pep. it was one of our most unique experiences and the food was great too. Be in line before the doors open or you'll miss out. Our favorites in San Sebastion for pintxos hopping: Casa Vergara, La Cepa and our favorite Ormazabel in the old town Bar San Marcial by the concha Also if you get a chance it's a very nice drive to San Jean de Luz from San Sebastian. For my recent trip report you can go toFodors:
  3. mmmmmm....we are making 'psghetti and meatballs tomorrow night! We like our meatballs beef, with some parsley, breadcrumbs and grated parm in them. Light though. We like our sauce homemade, simple red sauce...cooks for about 30-40 mins. Uses canned Italian crushed tomatoes. We like LOTS of fresh grated parm on the dish!! We like dried speghetti! And we like it all with a little green salad, some homemade garlic bread and Chianti!!! Can't wait for dinner tomorrow!
  4. Just as a fyi if I remember correctly they bring you a platter of fruit, nuts and blue cheese after dinner- whether you order dessert or not. Someone confirm this, it's been over a year since I've been.
  5. yep! But it's only open Tues-Fri from 11 -4 so plan accordingly. Late in the afternoon is better as you can usually snag a seat at the communal table and have some vino with your yummy meat!
  6. I don't think I mentioned Chapel? it's on Capital hill and has $4 martinis from 5-8pm. Fantastic flavors too. Take my advice, don't try to work your way thru the menu without a driver! haha!
  7. There was a recent article in the Times I think, commenting on how Dahlia has really improved their service and food recently thanks to them having the James Beard award. I think Union is a great "must check out" as is Salumi for lunch if you've never been (didn't I read about your love of sasauge on the BC site?). I think Le Pichet is a real treat if you like bistro french and how about checking out the cocktails at Sambar next to Le Gourmand in Ballard for an off the beaten path find? Have fun while your here! Oh and Fandango is indeed closed.
  8. I really love Chez Maitre Paul which is not far from where you are staying. 12, Rue Monsieur le Prince75006 metro Odeon. This restaurant does dishes from the Jura region. The chicken in yellow sauce with morels is not to be missed!! I've eaten here on 2 different occasions, once with my husband and just again in April with friends who live in Paris. Everyone agreed this is a great find! Reservations are a must as it is quite small. Dinner for 2 with a bottle of wine ran us about 75Euro. Very well priced and really wonderful food unlike the typical bistro. A family owned restaraunt I like is Chez Rene 14, boulevard Saint-Germain - Paris 75005 Subway : Maubert-Mutualite. this little bistro does up all the classics but isn't ramped towards the tourists. When my mom and I ate there twice in the same week we became "regulars" and were seated near the families attorny and dentist! Very large portions, wonderful family and excellent food! Dinner for 2 with a few glasses of wine about 80E Have fun! edited to correct that both of these are more in the Latin quarter but are very easy metro stops away from you and well worth it!
  9. I just thought that the bar at Waterfront might be nice and what about El Gaucho? Do they still have the smaller jazz venue downstairs?
  10. Chapel is on Capital Hill. they make great martinis and the space is very unusual, it use to be the chapel of a funeral home. It's not grim at all though, quite the opposite. They have a great Happy Hour every weekday 5- 8pm. Check it out so you can see for yourself. I swear they have like 30 different flavored martinis!! I had my 35th b-day party at Palace last year in the private room. We had 14 people and it was really fun. What spa are you going to (location)?
  11. How fun!! Places that come to mind afor food are the Capital Club (private room), Assiago (I've been to a few large group b-day parties here, they set up a long table), Palace Kitchen (private room but you can leave all the windows open to the restaurant). Drinks at Il Bistro, Zig Zag, Brasa, Chapel.........
  12. We were just in the Rioja wine region (haro/laguardia) and talked to some people who had done this. I would think working in this type of area would be awesome!!
  13. Oh that is just down the steet from us, I will stop in and check! thanks!
  14. Excellent you guys, thank you! I was just at the creamery but totally forgot to look for the wee little quail eggs!
  15. I want to try to create some Spanish influenced pintxos (tapas) with fried quail eggs. Does anyone know anyplace in town where I can find them? Thanks!
  16. I thought about this thread last Fri as I drove from DT to Ballard. There is a new (?) taco truck on 15th just over the Ballard Bridge (50th), anyone been??
  17. I haven't been but keep in mind that it is part of a chain from the midwest(?), not that this is bad but it's not a true NW restaurant. I really have to disagree with the comments on Waterfront- I still feel that it is the best for seafood on the water (but it is dressy). Just my 2 cents
  18. Salty's can't be beat for it's view but IMO the menu is from 1980 and the prices are overpriced for the quality. There is MUCH better food to be found in Seattle but I like to go over there for a cocktail and the view some times.
  19. Personally I think Waterfront is the best. They have a gorgeouse waterfront location right on the pier, amazing views, the food is fantastic and the service is top notch. We actually used their private room for our wedding rehearsal last year and couldn't have been happier. I just went to Rays recently and granted we ate upstairs for the view. The food was very mediocre and the service was terrible! My fish was overdone!! I won't be spending $$ there anymore unless it's happy hour.

    Geoduck

Many canned clam chowders use goeduck instead of clams as the meat so you may have already had it and not even known!
  21. My husband had a few of these last weekend. They are really good!!! I think it's Hendricks gin though? I could be wrong- I thought Ciroc was Vodka? Anyway it's super tasty! He usually has the gingerini mmmmmmmm
  22. Call Shannon, Annie or Jane at Mangetout Catering: Mangetout Catering Inc 1910 E Prospect St Seattle, WA 98112 (206) 329-1227 Tell them Wendy Willis/Miller sent you
  23. We also grill ours with the husks on, we peel them back first and remove all the silks then wrap the husks back up (you can remove some of the thick outer ones if you like) and place them on the grill for about 15 mins. turning often. Also you can wrap a piece of bacon around each corn and then pull the husks up before grilling- adds a nice smoky flavor. When they are done, remove the charred husks or just pull them all the way back and tie with some kitchen string to keep them out of the way when eating. Make a few different flavored butters by mixing ingrediants with softened butter and then chilling it to firm it back up. We like to add paprika, herbs, roasted garlic, YUM!
  24. We use Bartenders Friend for all out stainless AllClad! Works like a charm if you make a little paste with it.
  25. We hadn't been to Barbacoa for over a year and we had a Restaurant.com gift certificate so we went last night. A great evening for sitting outside at a table on their front sidewalk. We love the mojitos here. They are the best around IMO. They use grapefruit juice, fresh squeezed, which I'm not normally a fan of. But here it works! and they give you a sugar cane stick which is quite tastey for chewing on! We shared the Queso Fundido appetizer. We had to wait quite a long time as they were busy but we had our mojitos to keep us busy The Queso was served in a small cassarole dish, melted cheese with ground and almost crispy chorizo along with pico de guillo (sp). Small flour tortillas on the side. You scoop the cheese into the tortillas and make little burritos, pretty good. I especially liked the texture of the cheese contrast with the crispy chorizo. I ordered the center cut ribs w/ mashers and onion rings. The ribs were just ok I thought. They weren't falling off the bone cooked. the smoky flavor seemed just on top. The meat was good but not great. The sauce was thick and a bit too spicy for me. The onion rings however rocked! My husband had the chicken breast which was wrapped around a piece of Andouille sasauge and some peppers, then "chicken fried". This was a huge hit! And it was served with corn bread pudding which is a favorite of ours. Very good, his dish was the winner. We had another round of mojitos with dinner. Total was $60 before our gift certificate. We really do like this place for a casual tasty meal on QA!
