  1. What a great thread, and it's bringing back a ton of memories.....

When I was very young it was always birthdays at Ferrells Ice Cream for me and my friends. So fun!! Then as I got older we had parties at home. Mom always made these funny cakes, in shapes like snowmen (b-day is in DEC) or the like. One year she made me a Baked Alaska! wow!!

Once in high school I always got to pick a restaurant to go out to, and I got to bring one friend. This tradition held until last year when she passed away from cancer. We had many memorable meals together, trying all sorts of restaurants which really manifested into my "foodie-ness". Here in Seattle my favorite for years was the original Dahlia Lounge (as seen in "Sleepless in Seattle"). My mom would lug in all these presents for me and we would make a scene unwrapping gifts at out table!

For her 60th b-day she got to open her present at the table of a French restaurant, a trip to Paris with me, her first and last.

Last year, the first without my mom, we had dinner in the private room of Palace Kitchen (another of Dahlia's Tom Douglas' restaurants) with my husband and 13 of my closest friends- my family now.

  2. BTW the rooms in the Andra are very cozy.

Our celebration includes a stay at the Andra so I'm pleased to hear that it's cozy. It sounds like skipping breakfast wouldn't be a bad idea thogh.

Thank you all for the kind welcome. I'm sure I'll continue to post as I've never been accused of lacking an opinion! I love food and, despite my original rave, quick to point out anything less than stellar. I'm more offended by mediocre food than by outright bad food.

  3. Also where are you staying? The University Best Western on Brooklyn and 45th is very cool art deco-ish and the lounge, The District, has a good happy hour. Also we think Perkengruven on the Ave has the best coffee. If your there on a Sat. don't miss the farmers market- corner of Brooklyn and 50th. The yummiest struedles made fresh by the Struedle lady, as we call her!

We also like Cedars indian food, corner of Brooklyn and 50th.

  4. Saw this mentioned in today's Fresh newsletter:

THIS WEEK: GET YOUR KNIVES SHARPENED AT THE FARMERS MARKET: Professional

knife sharpening will be available at selected Markets on selected dates

beginning this weekend. Kitchen Song, a locally owned knife sharpening

business will be on hand at the U-District and West Seattle Markets to

sharpen your essential kitchen tools for very reasonable prices ranging from

$2.00 - 4.50 per knife. Shoppers can drop their knives off with the knife

doctor for sharpening while they shop…

NOTE: Shoppers should bring knives to the Market wrapped thick in

    newspaper…NOT cloth or plastic bags!

Anyone have any experience with them?

  5. I picked up some really nice cucumbers at the u dist farmers market on sat. that will make a great tzatiki tonight and will go will with a nice medetrainian inspired dinner.

Also picked up some really nice tomatoes for gazpacho tomorrow!

Corn that I turned into a fresh creamed corn last night was still sweet and juicy.

Saw lots of winter squash popping up and the new crop of lettuce seems really good too.

  6. Had friends over for dinner, the theme was pork!

kirs w/ onion tart topped with crispy bacon

2001 JK Carriere Willamette Valley pinot noir

    McCrea late harvest viognier

as always pls excuse the bad spelling!!!

  7. We dined at MB's Kursaal restaurant in July. I thought it was fantastic, here is what I wrote about it:

<<That night, with the help of our hotel desk staff, we went to Martin Berasategria's restaurant Kursaal which is also in the Kursaal. What a fantastic restaurant! They deserve a star for sure. The layout is very minimalistic, tables very far apart. The staff is top notch and each staff member presents a different course to your table, each being an expert in their courses. The food was phenomenal...on the cutting edge without going over. We wanted to share a few things and just like in the book "A Meal Observed" which follows the staff and days of the famed Taillevent in Paris, instead of splitting things they gave us each our own portion and just charged us once.

We each had a glass of sherry, shared a bottle of wine, app and 1st course split, each had an entree, dessert, coffee and after dinner drinks for 150E. We loved this restaurant!!! As at the restaurant in Barcelona Kursaal provided small baskets for womens purses, cute! Really though I hightly recommend a night here. I also heard that they have a lunch tasting menu that includes a glass of wine for something like 20E each! Mr. Berasategria is very famous in this region and has 4 or 5 restaurants around.>>

I'm sure his namesake restaurant is well worth the price and the drive but we just LOVED this restaurant so if you get a chance......Have fun!!

  8. Hubby and I checked out Pair on Fri. I thought it was on capital hill but we are very happy to know that it is in wedgewood, very close to us. Just 2 doors down from the Queen Mary teahouse.

No reservations taken, we had a 40 min wait at a little after 7pm. Got seats at the bar and each had a glass of wine and shared the heated olives in orange zest and corriander seeds as well as the guygere (sp), I love these little cheese puffs! The restaurant only serves beer and wine, no liquor liscense.

Seated about 45 mins later. We shared all our plates. Started with chacoutrie which had a salami, serano and land jaegger. yum! Then went for the lamb with tapanade (could have been done a bit less IMO), the special risotto with mushrooms and crispy leeks. Cheese dish after had a blue, a goat and another firm mild sheeps milk. all were very good. 1 bottle of Sangiovese with dinner.

Dessert, we shared a decadent chocolate pot du creme with crushed chocolate covered espresso beans. I had a muscat and my DH had a port.

Everything we quite nice. The interior is charming, french farm house style. Candlelight but not white linen. Service was good from start to finish. We gorged and the total was $140ish.

Will absolutely be back to try the mac n cheese and salmon toasts amongst other things.

    (sorry for the bad spelling!)

  9. I messed up (my timing).

I was at Troiani Saturday night for a late light supper. Finally looked at the bar menu and Happy Hour offerings. Currently, they are serving M-F, 3pm to 6pm, $5 house martinis, cosmos, and lemon drops --- and all bar bites for $4.00. This is insane. This includes stuff such as octopus salad, burger & fries, mussels (great preparation with fennel, coriander, and orange), gnocchi sandwich, and grilled prawns.

I think this is a must try, once my schedule gets back to something more sane.

Girlfriend and I checked out Troiani last night. This may be my new favorite place!! First off valet parking is free at 5pm, yeah! Then the bartender Patrick use to work at Sapphire before it sold and is great at the drinks! We both had the cosmo's which are made with basil and are just the right sweet/tart balance. $5ea!

The $4 plates are amazing!!! We had seared ahi, done just perfectly on a bed of fennel, oranges, basil chiffanade and yummy olive oil. This is GOOD!!!!

Also tried their crab cakes. 2 large cakes with an amazing romensco (sp) sauce. Really nice cakes, tons of crab, on a bed of arugula.

Grilled prawns with salt and paprika. Big fresh tasting prawns with great grill marks. 6 on a plate!

Seriously this is a fantastic deal. Not only that but Rick Troiani came and spoke to us, showed us around the restaurant. It is very nice. I still wonder if the regular menu prices are a bit high but I have to say the food was outstanding!

to top off our already fantstic night the front desk manager gave us 2 tickets to last night's Hairspray as she couldn't get off work. We had 12th row and it was fantastic! ok, back to food.

Go for happy hour! or if you are near the restaurant for lunch I looked and they have really well priced daily lunch dishes.

  10. Salumi is only open Tues-Fri from 11 till 4 so plan accordingly. This is a deli so don't get all dressed up! I like to go a bit later as I find it's easier to get a seat at the communal table which is great fun.

I love Le Pichet for lunch or dinner, it's another reservation place because it's also small.

I think that any visit to Seattle should require a Tom Douglass restaurant, my personal favorites are Palace and Dahlia.

Also you may want to try a few happy hours, just went to Troiani on 3rd and Madison last night....AMAZING appetizers of seared ahi, crab cakes, grilled prawns, etc for $4 each!

Also in Belltown I think Marco's Supperclub has a good northwest vibe and the food and La Panier in the market for gorgeous baguette sandwiches or morning pastries is a gem!

  11. Pasta with Sage in Brown Butter is a staple in my house! While penne or your favorite noodle is boiling, melt a good amount of butter in a large saute pan ( I use 4 TBS to 1/2 lb. of pasta) . Once the butter stops foaming add whole or roughly large chopped fresh sage leaves, they will "fry" up and give an amazing aroma! Drain the pasta really well, add to the butter and sage, grate some parm or pecorino and toss. Green salad on the side, a perfect meal.

Microwave popcorn for those really desperate nights!

  12. Greetings. There was just me and Dubkat. We both ordered the tasting menu. I have to say that our serving person (tall guy with glasses, name?) and Hans (sp?) a person in a black suit were very nice.

Did the waiter in glasses have dark hair and dark glasses rims, a bit of an accent?? I've had him too and he is also very nice.

In the 3 times I've been to Union I have always been given tastes of things or sent little extras, mainly from Jason the bartender who rocks!!

  13. I've always seen cabbage served in my tacos, I usually have fish but have had it with asada also. Even here in Seattle I will get cabbage sometimes, I think Aqua Verde serves theirs with cabbage. Anyway, I've had this in Cabo San Lucas and Zijua on the west coast.

  14. Forgive me if I'm the only one who has this lack of knowledge but since I'm not a gardner I always wonder what is really at it's peak to buy at both my farmers market and the grocery store. I'd like to try to prepare dishes that are more seasonal, say a more European style of cooking with what is fresh. Since so many things are available year around I get confused by what is actually in season!

So right now....early Sept. I see a bit of corn and beans still around, potatoes arriving at the market as well as some squash. What do you think is peak right now for cooking with???

  15. While at Flying Fish not to long ago we told our server that our party of 4 was heading to the theater after so needed to be done by whatever time. Then when they came to take the order one of my friends was thinking out loud about the crab legs. "That really is messy and takes a while to get through, might not be great for your time restriction" the waiter said. We all were thinking the same thing so we appreciated her validation. I think it's better to err on the safe side. I think it's like people who order Tartre in France and then yell because their meat is raw!! Might as well point it out but then let them make their own decision!! I think that is where the server at Wild Ginger went wrong.

  16. It was a now-defunct Chinese restaurant in Spokane, Washington.

BTW - one place you should eat if you're ever in that city is Patsy Clark's.  Great wine list, excellent food.  At least, that was the case when I worked there several years ago...

Oh lord, I grew up in the Can (as we called it), Patsy Clarks was originally owned by the Campbell Soup people. First time I had escargot, dressed in my Jr High satin prom dress...bless their hearts.

My story....recently in Tuscaloosa Alabama we found and ate BBQ at Dreamland. All they serve are ribs, white bread and sauce. At the table next to us this very blond woman and her very blond family ask the waitress if they have any sides like cole slaw or beans. The waitress replied "that there is white people food! This is barbeque!" I almost fell off my bench (into my sauce) laughing at the shocked look on the woman's face!
