  1. Hello. I am searching for a place similiar to Gablers, which is no longer in business. I'm looking for a very casual, "beer and crab joint" kind of place. In the Chesapeake area. Off the beaten track, not Obricki's or similiar. Well spiced crabs...oh, my mouth is watering just typing this. Gabler's, in Perryman, was on the Black? Shark? Blackshark? river, looked like it was about to FALL IN the river, actually, hadn't seen a coat of paint in decades, newspaper over the tables, crabs in a bucket, call ahead to reserve your dozens. Any suggestions appreciated, NJ couple experiencing crab withdrawl!!
  2. That used to be a pushcart in midtown, 5th and 54th...maybe in the mid 80's...did that guy open a place? He had great sausages, and long lines during good weather!
  3. There is a bathroom, in the kitchen...years ago my son was able to use it, maily by grabbing onto the frontof his shorts, and jumping about..he was 5. There is also definitely soda. There are a few Lorenzos only one Lorenzo's tomato pies.

    Simply Sublime

While Mark's BLT is close to perfect, I prefer Beefsteaks, still warm from the sun, a dollop of spreadable goat cheese, a drizzle of olive oil, a few shards of basil, and cracked pepper. Sometimes, I'll add raosted red peppers, but this is not as 'simple"...also, I have been known to eat a fresh tomato like an apple, with just some coarse salt. AHHHHHH....
  5. Oh, c'mon, fess up...you stopped taking her seriously when Tad came into the picture!!
  6. How about a Morimoto e-gullet dinner, in the fall. Oh, the possibilities!!!

    Dimple

OK, IF you didn't accuse her of being a troll, then you implied it by the Hector comment. So you started it, as usual. I don't know troll, I don't know Chowhound, actually amongst all this food knowledge and great writing, I don't know much. But I do know that you are really quick to put down people, really quick to accuse people, and you use a lot of paragraphs when just a few will do. This site is amazing, full of information and great opinions, very often yours included. But enough already, sometimes its not a conspiracy, its just a post describing a good meal, and a service question...that's all, no ulterior motives, no Scully or Mulder or lone gunman. While those of you with great food savvy bring e-gullet to its highest level, it still needs to be comfortable to a person who just wants to share some comments about a good meal.

    Sam Adams Light

Had it this weekend...very good light beer. I'm already thinking how I can use up those saved calories! ;)
  9. Yeah, every time I order it, t he counterman questions me: "NO Egg?" I have an issue with yolky eggy slimy stuff while in the throes of a major HO, so I skip the egg. I agree, however, that it seems un-Jerseyan to do so...I will ride two extra exits while singing "found myself a gun" for penance.
  10. Actually, these will be moving to the "non-gettable" list soon...multiple children have choked on the nugget of candy or fruit in the gel...seems that hte coconut is the same size as a two year olds esophogus. The most recent victim was a 18 month old from Newark,NJ, and there is already lawsuits initiated and restrictions placesd on this product.

    Zagat Bashing

One service that Zagat's provides is a description of the restaurant's ambiance... ie "business club" or "romantic". I much prefer a personal reccomendation... Recently, the heartland board gave me a couple of ideas for places in Chicago...and I compared those names to the Zagats to see which places fit the needs ( in this case, entertaining a lobbyist) of my visit. It was helpful in that respect.
  12. Dark chocolate. and things sprinkled with cocoa powder. I love milk chocolate, however.
  13. Ah, all these experts on the board, and finally, an area in which I have a certain expertise! LOL. Pork roll ( AKA Taylor Ham) and cheese on a hard roll, and Hawiaan punch. Takes care of the fat and sugar, then bottled water with lemon the rest of the day.
  14. You mean there are MORE qualifications then memorizing the 30 names and places previously mentioned?

    NJ MONTHLY

And do you thing Mei Tei, which is a very good place, perhaps stuffed the ballot box? I think they got two or three top rankings.

    NJ MONTHLY

This should really read "...every edition the NORTH Jersey restaurant edition..."for example, they could not find ONE ethnic place south of New Brunswick? I guess that's their advertising market, so its who they cater to, but really, change the name of the magazine!

    Pressed sandwiches

I actually read this post with complete co-dependency, hoping Ms. Hesser did not mention her home life or personal info in any way, causing the wrath of Nina! Whew, when she started in on her waffle iron, I thought she was going to mention it was an engagement gift...that was a close one!!
  18. Wow, I drank a lot of wine last night. Yes, I am fully aware that the above posts shares WAY more information then anyone wants to know about me!! These keyboards should have a breathalyzer lock, you can't type boring monologues if you've had a few.
  19. You've heard of weekend warriors, those folks who are dormant through the week and then play competitive hockey or softball ont e weekends...and then pull a major muscle or something? Anyway, we're weekend cooks...How it works is that during the week, I make all the kid food, which needs to be easy, quick and re-heatable. Ours are 17,15, and 12. Lots of sports, part time jobs, summer school and activities. Usually, I roast two chickens on Sat or Sunday. All the meat is pulled and packaged for the week. Differnet kids mean different prep: If the two older teens are home, they can be trusted to make their own pasta...then its adding either grandma's sauce she delivers. or prego, and a few handfuls f the shredded chicken. The little guy prefers veggies and red meat, so I might defrost some homemade meatballs, and pre-cook some borccoli that he can heat in the microwave. If my eldest daughter is home, its making sure there is romaine and fresh cheeses, her meal is complete. Middle son is mostly yucky prepared foods: rice a roni, mac and cheese, frozen raviolis and piazza. Without guilt, I admit at least a once a week foray to pizza or chinese..and often, Micky D's. Luckily in the summer, we also get a lot of sleepover invites...when they are the invitee, who cares, when they are th inviter, I make grilled steaks and pierogyis from a great Slovakian/hungarian shop in the town nearby. Somehow, the kids never starve, LOL. Usually, we have business dinnersduring these times...if not, we choose local Italian bistro places or sushi, at least 2x a week. WE go out to a reservation like place once a week, 3 times in NJ, one time in Philly or NYC. It's our date night. We only have planned family dinners on Mondays. EVERY MONDAY, and those of you with toddlers might think this is terible. but the truth is, its pretty good to have one day you always dine with yourTEEN kids. I mean, the gymnastic coach for son #2 doesn't co-ordinate with the owner of the flower shop that daughter #1 works for, nor the retail computer store running a DIABLO tournament that son #1 MUST attend..drop him off at 9, pick himup at 3am!!!! Plus, there are days during the week that one kid or another winds up with us for dinner...we're not always alone!!! ANYWAY, weekends mean my husband shops for the main stuff..he'll do Wegman's, McCaffrey's, or Whole foods for fish, game and beef. Then, we'll figure a recipe from our books or our experience. I'll go to the farmer's market or Korean market to fill in the gaps of what he's bought...he'll shop wines either in the cellar or the stores, and we'll cook over the weekend. I make some variations the kids might like, certainly for my little guy who is more at home than his bro and sis, and luckily the most adventurous...lately, we've been big on duck, cause we can make it lots of ways, variation of spices, and he's loving it. Gosh, I wrote alot. I kinda love my life, and love how my food and cooking stuff works out..I'm proud of what we can do within the constraints of our lives, activities. kids and abilities. None of them are conniseurs, but at least I do nothing to STOP them from being one! LOL. I sound like a geeky leave it to beaver person, but I figure for the 2000's, I'm as close as they come!
  20. I'm becoming co-dependent...I'm on bed rest recovering from a nasty infection, and have spent some time with my friends on the Food Network...and as they cut and chopped, I would think.."I wonder how Malawry is doing?" I imagine the chicken guts were difficult...I commend your Nike Just do It attitude. Thanks for a good read.
  21. That's how I feel about Pep Farms Goldfish, which is my favorite snack cracker. Now they make them in Pretzel goldfish, which is just totally wrong. I also don't like the goldfish "sandwhich" crackers..those oversized goldfish with peanut butter or cheese in them. I don't mind a cookie vairiation ( the holiday white choc covered oreos are great!) but leave the goldfish and Ritz's alone!

    Oodles of Noodles

Pierogyis. Mushroom and onion, mushroom, or potato. Sauteed with a bit of butter and salt till warmed through. I buy mine at European Provisions, in South River NJ, or the Trenton ( NJ)Farmer's market.
  23. I flew to China on United, first class...and it was "Celebrate California" wine week...wow, what a list of wines. I had the entire bottle of Dunn Cab, and slept like a baby until 2 hours before Hong Kong! Coming back, we had my newly adopted neice, so wine was not a good option..but it was a great Lobster Bisque soup and, though I forgot the entree, a memorable airline meal, especially since I also usually fly coach and grab the chex mix the airling attendant throws at me!
  24. I'm headed to the Windy City the last weekend in July, and wil be free Sat nite and Sunday brunch. One of the best meals in my lifewas at Trotter's, I guess close to 10-11 years ago...is it still the best? What's the scoop on these others? Or, all you Chicogo-ans vote for an e-gullet get together on either of these days and my problems will be solved! LOL!
