  1. Cabby, if you can afford it, do the Montrachet dinner. I can FEEL you wanting to do it. Do it.
  2. YO YO YO. I never said that I had the "right" to determine anything. I only said what I PREFER and feel is appropriate. There's a HUGE difference there.
  3. marcus, for some it is clearly both. And how fortunate that egullet has room for all kinds...
  4. I was taken to fine restaurants in New York and in Europe from a *very* young age. I grew up loving and appreciating fine dining. If one can be fairly sure that one's child will be well behaved, then go right ahead and bring the kids - of course if a child is bound to disturb other diners, then it's inappropriate, but it's ridiculous to say so generally that fine dining is not for children - why???
  5. It's in Williamsburg. Don't remember what subway. Look it up
  6. Cono O'Pescatore is pretty darn decent. Old school red sauce fare. They have a restaurant and a takeout - the heros are amazing from the takeout place. They have some gems on their wine list, and on Thursday nights all Italian wines are 50% off - some excellent deals to be had. I've been for lunch a couple of times, and I asked in the restaurant for them to make antipasti with the hero fillings, and they have. Really good stuff.
  7. FG, Have you been to Cono O'Pescatore in Williamsburg?
  8. Yes, I was there - at the Tomato Tasting Dinner.
  9. I ate at Beyoglu last night, and we enjoyed it very much. More later. (an aside - went to Denino's on Staten Island today - lousy pizza).
  10. Wine books, wine magazines. And just re-read both volumes of Tony Kushner's "Angels in America" - not only were they great performances, but they're great pieces of literature.
  11. Oh yeah, count me as two people - me and The Beau. Grazie.

    Wine Course

So far so good! We've had 3 weeks so far. The teacher is excellent - knowledgeable, no silliness, lots of material covered, serious tastings, not "showbiz" in any way. I'm learning a ton, and my tasting skills are improving. 5 more weeks to go, then the exam on the 9th week. I'm very pleased with my choice so far. Jordyn and Matt - chime in!
  13. I'm so in!!!!! Salamis!!! My computer is in the shop, hence my recent absence....hopefully tomorrow. Arrgghhhhhh!!!
  14. Thuuunk! (That's my jaw hitting the parquet). Plotinki, you are a dangerously insane fascist. No he's not, you're just in denial about how the real world works.

    dirt cheap wines

Where do you get it in NYC, Steve?
  16. With your huge vocabulary can't you find a more polite way to ask? I was addressing a JOHNSON, for fuck's sake.
  17. What the hell is deep fried oatmeal?
  18. Sort of like BF and AF (CF?) Before Food, After Food (Common Food?)
  19. I think posts like this are the height of arrogance. Mark, if this is boring to you, then don't read it. Clearly, there are those of us who do not find it so, and your voicing your opinion in this context merely serves to insult those of us who are interested. The same goes for Jason and his "are you done yet" comment. If it's an issue of bandwidth, or some other legitimate moderator issue, then say so. If it's merely because you don't care about this topic, or find it "boring," then just say nothing. People go on and on in threads about many (in my view) mundane and mindnumbing subjects, and sometimes I'll say something like well I just don't get it, or I just don't watch TV, or whatever the case may be, but I don't say oh this thread is ridiculous, or aren't you people tired of this subject, or any such thing. That would be true snobbery.
  20. Or those whatchamacallit butty sandwich things?
  21. nesita, i think the bread at uprising is lousy. i like lopez bakery, which is now on 5th ave. near 5th st. - ish. but even they aren't *good.* for good baguettes - go to bierkraft on 5th ave. near union. they get fresh breads in every morning from the good places...
  22. seems that was the better of the two options. company aside of course. What a pleasant thing to say.

    Sparkling Shiraz

I've no idea of the specifics....but I've had sparkling shiraz in a couple of restaurants in NYC. It's not so sweet. I know they serve it at this mediocre Thai place called Long tan on 5th Ave. in Park Slope. The owner is Australian.
  24. I'll take it, I'll take it!
