  1. We went to 112 Eatery and had a fabulous meal, really amazing. Loved the caramel corn they give out at the end of the meal. We ate almost the entire menu and had nothing but rave reviews for everything, nice wine list too! Although I am not familiar with the area you are specifically looking for it seems to be this may be near there from the other places mentioned. A hui hou.......
  2. Between us and the dogs we go through so much yogurt - especially plain that we collect dozens and dozens of the large plastic tubs that it comes in, not the small size, but the big size. I started using them for this purpose and just put a lid on and throw away in the trash bag. This works well having a lid if liquids develope etc, unfortunately here we cannot recycle that sort of plastic or I certainly would. A hui hou...........
  3. My Dad was an interesting character. Born and raised on a reservation in Wisconsin, lived the simple life although a hard one. Hunted, fished, picked berries and beans for a few pennies a day, canned whatever they had with his mother. He went on to be a Flying Tiger and won the Distinguished Flying Cross among other decoration. He was an airline pilot for 30 years and used to fly the White House press corps around for Kennedy, Johnson and Nixon. He has these amazing stories about going to the Johnson ranch for those big bar-b-q's that they would host. Lyndon called him "Chief" and my dad coached him in skeet shooting. My dad ate all over the country and knew of all the little holes in the wall and would often bring back bread from SF, whole crabs, bolillos from Mexico that were so good warm with LOTS OF BUTTER. I sometimes forget what an incredible palate he had in the simplest ways. He loved to travel the country in his beloved motor home and eat at his diamond in the rough favorite "ham 'n' eggers." He loved that my first job at 15 was at the drugstore lunch counter going to get the groceries down the street and then making the homemade meatloaf, boiling the potatoes for hash browns, hand made burger patties, coming home smelling like the griddle. He ate there everyday when I worked and he was actually in town. He had a thing for not so great coffee which I never understood! Drank copious amounts of it all day/night. He would be pleased that all of you have such good memories of your folks too! a hui hou........
  4. Today would have been my Dad's 84th birthday. For months I have been thinking what would be a good quote for my signature, couldn't think of one. Thought of all the food writing I've read, all the great events I've been to and what I heard at those. I just couldn't get it. So today while I was cooking food for Manele & Koele and listening to some of my Dad's favorite songs (trucking and cowboy songs to be exact) it came to me. This quote came one day when we were all sitting around talking about eating and restaurants and places his friends owned and this is his famous quote, and I believe it to be pretty true! Anyone else have any favorite quotes from family about food/eating/reastuarants? Thanks Dad, Hauoli La Hanau and A hui hou...Daknuns
  5. I am sad about King Tsin We have followed the Wang's from the Beretania location, to McCully and Young and then were so glad he reopened further down Young St. I really enjoyed his food and some of my happiest memories from when we first moved to HI 20 years ago took place at King Tsin on Beretania. Much aloha to them and maybe they can reopen somewhere else!! a hui hou........
  6. I remember raving about this sometime last year. DO NOT DO NOT DO NOT buy the SZ model 680 S, it is a big stainless piece of trash. We got one last year and due to where we live had to get a whole different door because of the high humidity here (3 places on this island require such modification) which you don't find out about until it makes weird condensation on the door front. THEN they say, "oh where do you live on the island ........ that area and 2 others require a different door front" which takes 4 weeks to get..........Then the crappy ice maker only makes 96 cubes a day!!!!!!!!!!!!! When I called to complain about that they said "we're in Wisconsin and don't use alot of ice........" Well I was brought up going to WI to visit friends and relatives and they used plenty of ice. Besides this the storage capacity is very small on both sides and would be great if you were single or didn't like to cook and only carried out food and had leftovers. Why we got this is another story and never again would I buy their product with a built in ice maker, that probably was the whole wrong answer. Now when I redo the kitchen I have to put in an ice maker and still be stuck with this crappy small SZ. Good luck to you DON'T BUY the 680S!!!!!!! A hui hou
  7. I relished "Appetite for life" for many weeks and months! How inspiring was that?! I was taken away by the romance and love shared by Julia and Paul, their love made me cry that such passion could occur on this planet! Of course my beloved Higz is at Paul's level of support and passion and I think that if anyone no matter what their occupation/life path has that that is all one needs. Funny, I must now tell that she and my dad were in China at the same time working on the same base/mission and when I knew that it made my adutlhood love of her even more meaningful! I can't believe my dad a Flying Tiger amd Julia were in the same company! I wonder if ever at that juncture they talked food since my dad was from a reservation and had fished/trapped/and gathered wild rice from the lakes just to survive as a youth......The idea of these exchanges just rattle my brain and imagination!! Both are gone but certainly NEVER FORGOTTEN!!!A HUI HOU.......
  8. This is a tough week - 10 years ago on the 9th Jerry left us, we had a very pedestrian dinner of Rice-A-Roni "porcupines", fresh "nalo corn, "nalo" greens, North Shore Tomatoes and a bottle of 2000 Qupe syrah. Thanks for reminding me that a year has passed so quickly with so much events to recall, my beloved Maggie left us on 9/28 and now we have 2 rescued dogs living with us to ease the pain and void in our lives. I think I shall enjoy some very good fresh greens for salad with some fresh just picked tomatoes and some farm fresh red peppers roasted with some North Shore Cattle Company beef, simple but very tasty food as Julia would have enjoyed. Just good simple flavors celebrating the land and have a drink in her honor toasting toward the mountains and the sky to thank her for all she brought to us and all she continues to inspire. Mekealoha Pumehana Mme. Julia and A HUI HOU............
  9. Well I can tell you that if you ever need to do a shower room/stall Corian is the way to go. We did 3 showers in our house floor to ceiling (walls and all) Corian and the ease of cleaning is beyond compare, the looks are fabulous and the floor pans have a subtle etching to prevent slipping. We did 4 bath countertops with it as well with the integrated sinks making them easy to clean. When I do my kitchen next year I want Silestone for many of the reasons others have advocated. Sorry for the offshoot but just letting you know if you ever plan a bathroom remodel! A hui hou
  10. I receive mailings from them from this address Au_Bon_Climat@mail.vresp.com Todays' issue was quite exciting if you live in Huntington Beach Ca. The rare winery open to the public tour is this October 9th. We love his wines and him! He has great wit and is fun to talk with! a hui hou...... In Huntington Beach at Spark Woodfire Grill Jim will be doing a dinner as well as at their location on Pico Blvd. in Los Angeles. I would love to be able to attend!
  11. Aloha! Sorry you missed the show! I looked in my "Cook at Home with Peter Gordon" and all I could find listed with tamarind was tea and then a recipe for grilled tamarind with mango. Sorry! I hope you find out! A hui hou! Sounds like a good show - we don't get it here!
  12. In Naperville, Illinois I found the Julia Child Mastering the Art of French Cooking both volumes for $1.00 each in great condition, also there for .75 cents was Robin Leach's Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous cookbook which is a hoot and interesting at the same time. Pretty much you can see mostly people who are now divorced throwing lavish parties and the recipes. Here in Honolulu I got an ashstray from the Whitehall Hotel which we spent a most memorable night with a great room with a veiw and a very long night in the bar downstairs prior to. We all were there a few days after Jerry left us on 8/9/95 and drank in his honor since the Dead had stayed there on numerous occasions when they weren't at the Tremont or later for Jerry, the Ritz. a hui hou!
  13. I ate a giant bowl of blueberries with papaya, Kula (Maui) strawberries, apple banana, thin strips of lime mint leaves drizzled with ginger syrup from Pacifikool. It was just heavenly after the daily mile+ dog walk. A hui hou!
  14. Goldfish crackers (cheddar), egg salad sandwich made with Dailey's peppercrusted bacon chopped into the mix on whole wheat bread with yet more mayo on the bread, crispy gaugee, chicken strips from the Safeway deli while I shop the store handing over the empty bag to the cashier to ring up, frozen Reese's peanut butter cups, Tombstone pizza with more pepperoni added and a coating of fresh parmesan all over the top and red pepper flakes, fried pork chops - the whole thing even the fat on the edges with a ginger jelly glaze trickled on top, mashed potatoes slathered in butter and maybe even cheese, right after I leave the parking lot from Pilates sometimes stopping in at McDonald's and getting a Mighty Kids happy meal double cheeseburger with extra ketchup and a lemonade, prime rib bones held in hand slurping out all the juice and hidden meat.....and big martinis! In fact I am going to shake up a batch right now so my husband and I can indulge in the hot tub when he returns from walking the dogs - I feel guily for not going along! a hui hou......Just finished the rest of a bag of said goldfish.......
  15. We recently spent a lovely afternoon in the pool floating about with some Pommery "Pops" those little bottles of champagne that come with a straw, perfect for summer drinking! a hui hou
  16. Aloha and CONGRATULATIONS Katie! I always liked that Gloria song! Like I said before, I enjoyed seeing you take that victory swig! Good luck and stay cool! A hui hou
  17. What about the description "decomposed lasagna"? she probably wanted to kick herself for using that term instead of "deconstructed." I thought it was mean at the end when they held up the pan and made both agonize over the final outcome, it seemed to last an enternity. Congratulations to Katie - nice swig on the champagne bottle! You deserved it! A hui hou.......
  18. You might be right about Burger King.......Cock Robin was pretty awful, they did put in a lovely park where it used to be. Burger King was a good place to quench the munchies from sitting on the bridge all day......I graduated from Central in 1974, a year early. a hui hou......
  19. Yes, how could I forget - Tamura's. They have great great prices on specialty foods and a consistent selection if you find something to be a favorite. I like the Mexican market on Beretania across from Times for specialty items as well.
  20. I am devoted to the Saturday farmer's market at KCC, unlike the open markets I am assured that the produce is from here not re-boxed from Costco which is often the case. We pretty much get everything we need there for the week including the North Shore Cattle co. beef for us and the dogs. My other shopping like the rest of you might be to Costco for fish and maybe some blueberries in those big boxes but only if they are from the U.S. and not Chile or somewhere like that. The Times near me is dreary like I always think of them to be and the parking is terrible. So I go to Safeway for certain things (garlic for example) and Foodland in Kailua which is a very nice Foodland. I wanted some Sinai 48's and they did not have them nor do they carry that outrageously delicious bacon from Canada Dailey's which is peppercoated and awesome. I should get to some of these places you all have mentioned besides Y. Hata on Sand Island Access Rd. which I enjoy shopping at, never know what they'll have and I like shopping the restaurant supply area too.
  21. Aloha - when I go to my hometown of Naperville twice a year this is what I eat. I like the Catch 35 quite a bit although it's expensive. Try Hugo's Frog Bar (yes, I know there's one in Chicago too) but the prices are terrific - especially for lunch. They have a great soup (clam chowder) for only $1.00 for a huge bowl, lots of sliced potato and bacon chunks, salads for $1.00 and those little sirloin burgers for I think $1.00 or you can get a little platter. The prime rib steak sandwich is killer along with their french fries. I like to buy food from Casey's up off Washington & Gartner (?) across from the Mid-American bank meatloaf to just heat at home with some of their baked potatoes or they have a nice deli with Boar's Head meats. I always buy to eat when I am there sausages and then buy some to take home (freeZe). I liked the Heaven on Seven and I really really enjoyed 10 West as the food philosophy stayed the same after the departure of Patrick Cassata. Nicky's on Ogden and Loomis (?) has some great gyros (also chicken gyros) and some tasty corned beef sandwiches. I also like Bar Loui's they have a great cheeseburger and other good food at not too expensive prices (I know they have other area locations). There is always the good ole Lantern on Washington and Chicago Ave. if you can take the cigarette smoke, their chili was always good/still is, we carried out one night. I also really like the Tango, the empanadas were really good with the corn relish and the steaks were fabulous with their chimmichurri sauce which is different that lots of places in that it is not totally green but clear with lots of garlic some carrots and the usual cilantro and parsley. I would have guessed that China Buffet would be totally gross - just driving by and seeing the scum build up on the windows gives me the creeps making me never wonder what it was like inside....... I do like the Tong's restaurant in that sad looking shopping center at the corner of Naperville Rd. and Ogden Ave. They have some great Szchewan food, killer hot and sour soup in addition to cantonese fare. If you carry out be sure to check your order before leaving! It is always good I like their egg foo young, something I never think of eaeting anywhere else. This is just a short list of places we go when we visit, next time will be in October/November, too cold for my tastes but what can you do? Enjoy your dining - a hui hou
  22. She lives here and has to have a reception for 310 at Mariposa at Neiman's November 26. The other part of the family that is not coming is from CA in the San Fernando Valley area. She has her work cut out for her as you can see! I will press her for more details letting her knowt hat people are trying to help but we need more concrete info. Thanks so much to everyone so far! You all are so helpful and nice! A hui hou
  23. Yes, sorry I forgot about the geography there.......Doing this for somebody else sorry. Yes it is the San Fernando Valley. It's like when people say "we're coming to Hawaii for a week" and you have to ask well "which island." A hui hou......
  24. My friend has asked me if I know of anywhere in the Valley area that would be good for a reception. There will be guests of all ages (including children) and it does not have to be fancy or complicated food. It would be for about 200 or so in the late fall. They were thinking chinese but were told that most good places were in Monterey Park which would be too far for everyone to travel. I realize this is somewhat vague and I apologize but she is busy coordinating the other reception for the same couple over here and is quite overwhelmed! So if anyone has any suggestions that would be great! Thanks so much and a hui hou
  25. Well unfortunately I was not able to go to my dad's funeral last July. He died in June and was cremated immediately. The delay in the ritual - and it was a ritual was due to the availability of traditional Native dancers who in the summer are on the competition circuit. When a date was finally arranged that day food was prepared of traditional fare by Oneidas from the reservation. They made an enormous quantity of food and set a place for my dad for his last meal before his spirit went above. Chanting and fanning tobacco for his journey they were to wait for an eagle to appear to signal his leaving and on the journey. Oddly enough an eagle sat in a tree above watching the whole proceedings and flew away when the dances/chants were over. There was another funeral that day and they took the leftovers as they did not have much money for lots of food of their own, my dad would have liked that. I have the proceedings in pictures and it is quite interesting. While it seems odd to many that I could not attend mostly due to logistics my dad would not have wanted me to fly all that way then drive another 9 hours to attend rather to come later on and visit with my mom as scheduled for later in the fall. a hui ho..........
