  1. Rachel & Jason, sorry to hear you won't be making it, hope your mom is doing well. I've decided to go ahead with the Grilled Chicken & Pasta Salad as I've had a good history with it, and will also be bringing portabellas to grill with a chipotle marinade. I also made a couple liters of Mustard BBQ Sauce just to make tommy jealous. I'll also be bringing a full sized chafing dish (For hog) and coolers as well as a couple tables, chairs, cutting boards and BBQ utensils. Should be there mid afternoon on Friday.

  3. You ought to try to get in touch with the local PBS affiliate or other media. Central Virginia PBS came and filmed at another Pig Pickin that I used to attend in Urbanna, Va.
  4. Adjust the meds, move on... A. Bourdain
  5. And speaking just for myself, I agree with that. Although exactly how to accomplish it eludes me. This is a similar issue for the workplace breast fondlers too. Winters coming and I dread the thought of having to take the fondling outside...
  6. I think Jason & FG should try to get Rick B. to come and do an eGullet Q&A...
  7. Just keep them clear of the stew pot...
  8. Varmint, I was just perusing the "Squash" thread which provided a link to a great, simple recipe for Corn And Winter Squash With Spinach And Bacon I was thinking of switching from the Pasta Salad which is actually more of a summer dish to this. Whaddaya think?

Wow. That looks really good. It certainly is. I made a big batch several days ago. It's good reheated or even right out of the fridge. Homer Simpsonesque "Mmmmmmmmm... Bacon!"

I like to cook halved & seeded acorn squash cut side down in a covered cassarole to which a couple cups of water and about half a cup of sherry has been added. Cook at 350 until nearly done, then uncover, flip to cut side up and add a tablespoon of butter and a a few grinds of black pepper to each half. raise oven to 400 and cook another 10 minutes or so. Have at it!
  11. Why? Recommended daily allowances are meant to convey the minimum amount of a substance that should be injested daily to prevent health problems from a deficit of that substance. These allowances have no bearing on the upper limits of what is concidered healthy. Much of the medical community is becoming more aware that there is only a small percentage of the general population that is sensitive to sodium, and of these, it is only the sodium bound as salt that is a factor.
  12. Just need the address so I can dump it in my GPS.
  13. how much sodium is in a sandwich, say, like this one. Probably about 1000 mgs, and that's just the bread.
  14. What tommy said, though I've also seen them as long as 2 inches. I would imagine thai hots could be substituted.
  15. That would be approximately 1.22 grams, not at all a substantial amount in the grand scheme of things.
  16. Don't forget I was planning on grilling up some chipotle marinated portabellas. I'll also bring some mustard BBQ sauce along with the chicken & pasta salad.
  17. because the internet doens't have everything. it works best as a complementary resource. best set of appendices, footnotes, suggested reading, etc. available. adds depth and breadth to a book or other reading. Still, the concept of sitting down for a couple hours and reading for enjoyment seems to be foreign to kids these days, regardless of their academic standing. At some point this activity was never shuffled into their busy daily itinerary.
  18. I've got a couple full sized chafing dishes if anyone needs them. Let me know.
  19. I had originally included Vegans, but decided that there were probably some perfectly valid reasons for someone to follow that route, whether nutritional or social. In fact I regard vegans with much more respect than the so called vegetarians that insist on carrying that label while trying to justify eating fish, cheese or eggs. I haven't decided whether mushrooms count as they are not veggies either... The Raw Food dogma, however, that somehow fruits and veggies evolved with "enzymes" whose sole purpose is to aid in their being digested by humans is sheer quackery of the highest order.
  20. Might the current Raw Food movement be considered fundamentalist? Behavior being dictated by blind faith and adherance to scientifically unproven dogma?
  21. It would be the equivallent of one of the candidates running for govorner of California, the most eco-friendly, politically correct, green state in the US drove a Hummer. Um, wait a minute...
  22. Well, that will certainly enhance his credibility as a spokesperson espousing the benefits of fresh, natural foods.
  23. It's not food related but a statement by my youngest son seems to sum up the current attitude of younger generations: "Why should I read books when I've got the internet?" To make it food related I ought to add that both sons work in restaurants, making real food...
  24. I could do a batch of chipotle marinated grilled portabellas, they're always a buzz...
  25. How ya doing for tables & chairs? I've got a few of each.
