  1. simply beautiful
  2. merci beaucoup - wonderful reviews!!!! chez michel 10er chef thierry breton from the crillon
  3. thx craig! & mr. mark , thx for the price info on veuve. interesting & surprising the "cost" to the retailer is as high as u indicate!! usually receive a better pour than 4oz/glass in nyc
  4. The "front line" price of Clicquot Yellow Label is $32 at wholesale. If you pour it by the glass or buy sufficient number of cases it goes down to $27. That's the best deal. i was just pointing out, the cost to the consumer at a retail outlet in manhattan, then the difference bet 2 restaurants pricing. i "assume" the cost to a restaurant is somewhat below the retail outlet's price, i.e., the wholesale price to the restaurant from the distributor??? & therefore the base level for the restaurant's mark-up. the restaurant price/glass seems to vary bet $14-16.
  5. well, for one, i read all your posts, so don't stop as for aux, it is in the 2er
  6. good or bad: don't be bashful! ues: demarchelier, ferrier, orsay, la goulue, l'absinthe, le clown, quartorze bis, jacque's bistro les: le pere pinard midtown east: montparnasse, le bateau ivre, jubilee, les halles, madison bistro, uws: cafe luxembourg midtown west: la bonne soupe, un deux trois w. village: chez jacqueline soho: raoul's
  7. re: malachi & Java-Joe: many many thx!!!!!!
  8. merci lou good catch & i appreciate. re: chez denise - one of the long time patrons bought us a cognac after a very long, heavy lunch which was poured from a huge bottle placed on our table. having had a couple of bottles of wine + several cognacs, i did not remember to get the name of the cognac, the taste i have never forgotten. if & when u return, if u would so kind as to inquire & let me know i would be forever grateful. btw, the patron, is referred to as the "Mayor of La Tour de Montlhery", eats at Chez Denise's everyday, & recognized us after a time span of 5 yrs!!! btw (2) have u been to Dumonet (Chez Josephine) 6er
  9. in addition to the meaning of a bistro, this would be called the "bum's rush"
  10. it is, but oddly only sells by the bottle, which, for a six(pack), is more expensive?? best beer outlet is on 23rd @ 10th
  11. interestingly, i went to my local "specialty" market this afternoon, & queried the guy in the coffee section amidst the barrels & sacks of all types of coffee beans. when i asked if any were "freshly-roasted", i pretty much received blank stares & digust from fellow customers when i pressed for an answer, the reply was that the coffee was delivered yesterday, as to the freshness, the reply was again - delivered yesterday. no response as to WHEN it was roasted. i guess an informed customer is NOT what these places want?? on a third attempt, i asked if ALL the coffee in the area was delivered yesterday? obviously, i did not receive any answer so, i guess, to KNOW IF coffee is fresh, i.e., freshly-roasted, one must either know their source, or go to a very specialty store, or mail order from a specialty site. which does beg the question as to how fresh IS mail ordered "fresh-roasted" coffee beans?????????? re: french press - will try to find tomorrow. what a "can of worms"
  12. look forward to your review of Hank's
  13. thx. it has a wonderful aroma & taste that lingers. not as heavy as other dark beers. this, of course, is from memory.
  14. do u mean Le Bon St.-Pourcain @ 10 bis r sevandoni, 6er?? & is Au Bon Accueil in the 7th or 11ther????
  15. Yes, but it's cheaper and the food is infinitely better. They don't have to rely on the mariachi-meets-Chuck E Cheese shtick Mama Mexico does either. It's a totally different kind of place. Groups of underage Columbia girls are rarely if ever found sucking down frozen margeritas at Noche Mexicana. That alone is enough to tip the balance away from Mama Mexico for me. Plus, if you want to pay those prices, it's not that far to Gabriela's on Amsterdam and 93rd. To get away from Mexican for a while, and to further explore one of the UUWS's restaurant strengths (inexpensive ethnic), has anyone bougut from Krik Krak on 101 and Amsterdam? They're a mostly takeout Hatian place I've been curious to try. And how about A on Columbus and 107th? That's a funky little "French-Caribbean" place we've always enjoyed. thx for the "tip". i was wondering about those columbia girls & the chuck-e-cheese shtick
  16. excellent suggestion BUX, & also, a big thx for all those who have responded. Benoît: from entering the front door to being led to your table, we felt "as if" we were back in the Paris before travel to europe was commonplace. love the fact it is still in the family. although not cheap, the overwhelming ambience placates my horror when receiving 'la addtion'! lots of americans, but find, these days, there are very few places that are undiscovered or only frequented by the parisians. as to the food: divine upscale bistro food. i do not have the menu in front of me, but whatever we ordered was excellent from amouse-bouche > disgestif!! there were a couple of extremely interesting dishes that i hope my memory allows me to include at some point in the near future, but suffice it to say, these will be the ones we order on our next visit. as an aside, saw a wonderful movie last nite: monsieur ibrahim with omar sharif
  17. UPDATE: neely's Interstate vs. Neely's: Neely's wins!!!!!!! & they are the cousins & nephews!!!
  18. just passing info along from a good friend in chas: rue de jean is a scene, but the food not so good (???) & can do better than hank's, as i said just passing info along from a native others mentioned, friend agrees with.

no one from egullet has been? went on valentine's - prefixe $45/ seemed overwhelmed with the crowd, & had too few waiters, & an annoyed tendency to overpour into our wine's glasses which is 1 of my pet peeves. escargot profiteroles: marian burros is clearly incorrect - the escargot are NOT from a can!!! however, the profiterole was not very good, would have been better served in shell or in cups of garlic butter. baked cabecou goat cheese salad also ok, but the baked cabecou could have had more goat cheese, less pastry lamb wellington (additional $10) for 2 was fine & perfectly cooked pear gratin interesting, but a touch runny nougat glace - good mignardises were NOT good, & should either be left off or brought in from the outside (?) wine prices reasonable, tables nicely spaced, still working out kinks. have a feeling; however, the owner(s)/chef will NOT take suggestions to heart. interestingly, the owner/chef was in France during this busy holiday!! & curious who was manning the kitchen on this very busy nite which could have helped spread word-of-mouth. may evolve into a "neighborhood & pre-theatre bistro. too early to tell. i must say i was a touch disappointed, but will go back!
  22. where is it located?
  23. thx, will search out a "french press" & order from you recommended links - do u have a suggestion as to what would be a good 1st bean choice, the selections, to a novice, are daunting. 1 additional question: are u aware of an artisanal roaster, a little closer to home, i.e., manhattan?? thx
  24. Its currently my favorite Cognac. $75 would be a -very good- price for it. Under $90 is what you should expect to pay for it these days. AMENDED: BEST PRICE FOUND: $85.99 on bottle: Hine Antique vintage fine champagne cognac which i assume is "The XO"??
  25. has anyone tried?? a touch louder: HAS ANYONE HAD IN MANHATTAN??
