  1. I'm a Charlie The Butcher Fan myself. And Duff's for wings. Anyone been to a place called Garlock's in Lockport. Great place with an amazing prime rib, but they don't take reservations and there is always a big wait.
  2. Lost dog is pretty good and they have a lot of different pizza choices but it can be kind of pricey and is better to eat in. It gets a little soggy delivered because they take a long time to get it to you. Between the two, I prefer Italian Store, but they don't deliver.
  3. Yeah I will amend my don't bother to: go to the Italien Store. THey have a pretty solid NY style pie
  4. Can you hone these knives with a regular old steel, or do you need a fancy ceramic one or something? also, do you hone it the same way as a German knife even though the blade is shaped differently?
  5. Piffle. It's across the street from Worldcom and AOL - believe me, there's 24-hour demand. Most of my friends are IT people who are forced to drive out there every day and believe me, they are not working until midnight. What is this good thing in Loudoun county besides wegmans and golf? It might be something I have to trek out into the great plains of VA for.
  6. whatever you do, make sure to only sear them a couple minutes each side. There is nothing worse than ordering up some scallops and having them overcooked and thinking I just paid 25 bucks for this and I could make it better at home. I suggest something real simple like a sear in butter (or bacon fat), then maybe some lemon juice and parsley for a quick pan sauce
  7. very un-wegman's like since all the NY ones are 24 hours that I know about. I wonder if the demand for late night isn't there because of the location out in the boonies
  8. I got a duck breast there Sunday afternoon. I am saddened to report that, when I went at least, it was absurdly crowded still. Being my first trip out there, the only thing I was disappointed with, besides the crowd, was the lack of a walk-in beer cooler a la all the upstate NY stores. I did amange to get some absurd deal on cans of coke that came out to 16 cents/can though!
  9. that is good to know. I was thinking of asking them where the original chef went to because I know he would not have put forth my friday night dinner there. IT really is a tough area for them. With Rock Bottom and Macaroni grill there, they only seem to get busy when there is a big line for those places. I cannot imagine why anyone would eat at a macaroni grill...
  10. I have always liked the sushi at Nouveau East in Ballston, especially their unagi. I have mentioned this on other threads and want to warn people now -- RUN! I went in this weekend and got the dreaded "we changed our menu". I knew I was in trouble when I saw a new setup that was obviously put in place to hold a lunch buffet. They changed the whole theme of the restaurant too from asian fusion with a solid sushi bar with interesting daily specials to very straightforward bento boxes and sukiyake and got rid of the interesting baby octopus and other neat sushi specials. Basically, they added the bagged salad with ginger dressing, a buffet, and turned themselves into Matsutake instead of a nice restaurant with an interesting menu. I think they changed ownership because they no longer have a liquor license so I couldn't even choke down my bad sushi with a big bottle of Kirin. I wouldn't recommend going for the sushi anymore there. It wasn't cut good and didn't have a lot of flavor. The unagi went from a sweet and slightly charred warm treat to a cold limp mush. If I wanted that, I could have gone to matsutake across the street or bought some Harris Teeter sushi. They turned a decent place into a truly mediocre chain-like monstrosity. I hope they choke on their lunch buffet profits.
  11. always a problem at all dim sum. Just when you can't eat another bite and get the bill tallyed, something bacon-wrapped comes rolling by!
  12. I used to love 25 Mott street or something like that for dim sum. It may not have been 25 but I know it was just a number for the name. Then they closed it down and it is now some froo froo fancy looking place that doesn't look like it belongs on that street. If you go to golden unicorn on sunday they have a great scallop dish with some sort of goo baked on top that is awesome. I think they only do it up on sundays though unfortunately.
  13. Do you have jobs to hand out? Some people don't have a choice.
  14. Dinosaur has a new honey mustard sauce. Has anyone tried it yet? I have a bottle of it but can't decide what to test it out on
  15. HSF was my "unlike some of the others"
  16. Golden Unicorn is my fave. It might be a buck or two more at the end of tallying it all up than some of the other places but I find it to be very consistent and good, unlike some of the others...
  17. I would rather eat Ben's stone-cold sober than ever go to Johnny's Half Shell again.
  18. I had one a couple days ago at Toojay's deli in Florida. I think you can make them at home pretty easily. NOt much too it, I think it is pretty much chocolate syrup, milk and seltzer
  19. I like Thaiphoon too. Much better than the Tara Thai near me in Ballston
  20. my roommate brought the pork home so I am not sure, but it was not prepackaged, it was just in a clear disposable container without a brand name so I assume they either made it themselves or opened a package and mixed their own sauce into it. Either way it was damn good.
  21. I had such a mediocre experience the one time I have been to Vidalia. Not sure if it was pre or post renovation though. We were at a tiny table against the wall and the maitre de kept leaning over our table fiddling with the air conditioner controls that were at head level right across from our table. He had to take the cover off and dust was falling on the table. Besides that mess, though I was also not impressed with the food and have had better meals for a more reasonable price at Georgia Browns. We had a pretty poor shrimp & grits and an ok duck. The duck was cooked nice and red center but the skin was not crispy....nothing like sucking down a bunch of limp fat.
