Yes!! Antique Sandwich Company is the name of the place. I don't know why I thought it was -on- Ruston Way. Good luck finding that Thai place! The last time I ate there would've been 1989. If you find it, let me know!

Wow! The E9 is still around! I used to hang out there (well, sometimes) when I was going to UPS (87-89). There was a little sandwich place down on Ruston Way (I think...), I've been racking my brain trying to remember it...the "Sprout" or something. We used to go to a little Thai place that was in a converted church, they'd pull out folding tables and chairs when they sat you. The food was amazing; that place got me hooked on Thai food. It was either on 17th or 38th, I don't remember anymore. Sorry, I can't help with lunch suggestions, but you stirred some memories with the E9.

Asian markets are a good source. I can't testify as to the quality, but the price is usually right!

Whoa. You just blew my mind.

Sounds good, could you post the recipe? maybe this betrays me as a gung-ho cook, but as far as i'm concerned, that IS the recipe Smartass My actual question was more like this: how much sumac would you typically use? Do you rely more on the sumac or the lemon for souring? I freehand my tabbouleh, but I'd never thought of adding sumak (or using quinoa, for that matter). I guess I better just go try it.

I love this book! I also recommend it to people who don't have bread machines, it's a good introduction to baking bread. I don't have personal experience with the new one, but there's a good Zojirushi BBCCX220 Review, if you haven't already seen it. Summarizing: I have the V220, I use it 3-4 times a week and I'm in no hurry to upgrade - but the new power failure protection would be nice.

Place names that include specific food references

Fruitland Salmon Elk City, Elk River Bear Camas (this was a Native American staple: About Camas. Confusingly, Camas the town is in Jefferson County, not Camas County) Eagle, Swan Lake and Swan Valley Fish Haven Reubens Soda Springs (do beverages count?) Sugar City (another one!) All in Idaho, most are very small towns. There's also Bear Lake and Caribou Counties, not to mention Cassia (but no Cinnamon!). -
Oh yeah, the Korea house makes a kick-ass potato kimchee, and Tsuru (a sushi place) makes an idaho roll that's stuffed with potato (I think it's tempura potato, it's good!).

Dear lord. Mountain Home is, uh...well, you'll see. Downtown (Boise) has a ton of cool places; on the Basque Block you can check out Gernika or Bardenay - Bardenay has an on-site distillery. They make a signature gin and an amazing Martini, they also have a pretty good menu. Or, you can head to the sister property, BitterCreek Alehouse, they have good food but a better beer selection. The Korea House is good, the owner and his wife are verrrrry friendly; if you go in for lunch, you'll be there a while (ask him about his tabi socks :). Upstairs is Shige, which has pretty good Sushi. The Cazbah has extremely good falafel (as does the Aladdin, but the Aladdin is a little harder to find). Actually, the whole Cazbah menu is good. There's a new Thai place called the Mai Thai? I don't remember the name, exactly, but it's something like that, it's pretty good. Moon's Cafe is an institution, if you like diner food (and sitting next to Boise's version of celebrities). The Flying M coffeehouse is a cool place to spend an aftenoon, I think they roast their own coffee...around the corner is a little french bakery whose name escapes me, but has some good (expensive!) stuff. I've left a bunch of places off. These'll get you started, anyway. A lot depends on how much you're willing to drive; Mt. Home to Boise is a pretty long drive (booooooring), and Boise is pretty spread out. There's some good Indian food out on the west end of town (not far from HP, which in turn is close to Eagle), along with the Santa Maria Barbecue place and a new Vietnamese restaurant (Pho 79, where I'll be for lunch in about 10 minutes ).

Well, I knew a guy who (accidentally) made pie dough with garlic butter but I wouldn't call that a success.

I love rasam, but I can't eat it "fresh." The toor dal makes it sweet (too sweet for my taste), but letting the flavors blend overnight seems to mute the sweetness. However, e101g's recipe adds way more tamarind paste than I usually do - I think I add a teaspoon to hot water, and it doesn't fully dissolve, so I'm probably only putting in about 1/2 teaspoon. Thanks for the recipe! I can't wait to try it.

If they're such great drivers, why don't they ever turn right?
-
Yes! Thank you! This is what drives me nuts about a lot of the existing vegetarian "cuisine" - it's all about being vegetarian, and not about being good.

I opened a can of kidney beans the other night (hey, I was in a hurry!) and glanced at the ingredients...beans, high-fructose corn syrup, salt. Yum! Kidney bean syrup!

You're supposed to eat the rice??

Aha! I've been using Madras curry powder (the british stuff in the green tin). I'm not that fond of the stuff (though it's better than McCormick ). Thanks for the recipe!

How do you make them? I've made them a few times, and I've never been all that happy (with the noodles, that is)...
-
You're kidding? They sell waterbugs (huge cockroaches) for eating, with the approval of the Department of Health? Wouldn't dead cockroaches in a store normally cause it to fail inspection in the U.S.? Yeah, they look like three inch long cockroaches! Isn't that crazy? Next time I'm there, I'll see if she'll sell me some and post a picture. Geez, I hope they don't get shut down because of my big mouth!

There's a Thai market here in Boise that sells those big ol' bugs! They have a freezer full of great stuff - whole eels rolled up like a cinnamon roll, bags full of frogs, and other stuff like that. My favorite part is the live snails in a big plastic tub.
