I also saw another new Indian restaurant--Saffron (on the menu in the window, it said Saffron Grill, but not on the sign) on about 3rd and Bloomfield. I'm wondering if they are at all connected to Saffron in E. Hanover. Mom tells me she has friends who say it's excellent. Anyone been there? Edit: Duh--just noticed you mentioned Saffron. Are you sure they're the same owners as IOTH and KK? Interesting, but it makes me wonder why they'd run 3 restaurants in the Mile Square! And as for the dishes that were available, my guess is that just like most of the other vendors--those are the foods that are cheapest and that survive the best when sitting on sterno/outside for the day. I picked up a pair of samosas that are now in my freezer, just waiting for the night when I'm dying for Indian food but can't get to Hoboken...

Wow. I certainly hope you just hit a bad night, but it sounds like Kim did as well. These reports do NOT bode well for TF! And it makes me wonder how/why An American Grill couldn't garner a VG but TF could. The night we went to TF, service was excellent, but that was certainly b/c we were a known group from eG--and Evan was personally overseeing things. I'm going to have to get over there with a few friends and see if we have a different experience.

You know, French food doesn't usually do it for me, but this is officially calling my name!! Does anyone know when they re-open?

Since I was heading to my cooking group (which is usually an eat-fest), I didn't plan on having anything to eat on Washington Street today. Got a great parking spot, listened to the band that was on around 2pm (Tim Hearth?? Tin Heart?? Dunno--but they were fun, and good musicians to boot), and then headed up through the HUGE crowd. Saw the pulled pork booth with its line, the fruit shakes, the Italian ices, the long twisty pretzels, the stuff on a stick, etc., and what turned out to be the first of two India on the Hudson booths. And I kept walking. I bought a Corian trivet with a moose cutout in the center. I marveled at what people were paying for total crap. Then I spotted this one booth with a sign that said Jordan's Ice Cream. And a list of about 8 flavors--the last of which was pumpkin. OH, how I love me some pumpkin ice cream. Or pumpkin ravioli. Or pumpkin anything!! With the autumnal chill in the air, I decided it was time to officially open my palette's fall flavor profile. You know...pumpkin, fig, port, etc. A sample told me this wasn't just pumpkin ice cream--it was GOOD pumpkin ice cream. So I had an amuse before the cooking group met. As Martha says, A Good Thing. Found out from gals in the cooking group who live in town that the owner of Jordan's is terrific (as is the staff), that the ice cream has a great rep (mine was very creamy and SO full of pumpkin flavor), the store is very supportive of local organizations, and that they're lamenting the fact that a Cold Stone Creamery is supposed to be moving in across the street. Why, why, WHY does Hoboken continue to allow the big guys to swoop in like that?!? I mean, I know the answer, but YEESH. This is my war cry--support the little guys! I know it's something that we talk about a lot on eG, but maybe not so blatantly. Restaurants, ice cream parlors, coffee houses, etc. Jordan's is on Washington Street around 4th Street. My rant for the evening. 'cause I'm not touching the Rocca controversy...

It's on--today, from 11-6.

YUM! Thanks for the details...will have to get there on my next trip. Cheers!

OOOOOOOOOH...those both sound yummy! Do you remember what is in them?!?
-
Thanks a lot, Basque! I'll certainly let you know where they end up. Much appreciated... Curlz

And that's all that matters--as long as he lets you drag him out for good food once in a while! Enjoy!

You're right to avoid Hoboken tomorrow. As for Elysian Cafe, I had one dinner there; wasn't knocked out, to be honest! The place is lovely inside, and dining al fresco is also an option, but I found the (French-inspired) menu a little too brief, and just wasn't impressed with my meal--with the exception of the frisee salad, which was ample and beautifully dressed. Other ideas... Trattoria Fresco (Caldwell)? 'tho if your bf didn't like the food at Rocca, I don't know if TF would still be too adventurous--but they do make pizza! (How do we find these guys, btw?!? ) How about the Ironbound? These places aren't BYO, but they're close to home! Casa Vasca is simple, good food; if you want ambiance, go to Adega Grill. Also in downtown Newark (new), is the Savoy Grill. I haven't been yet, but I'm told by folks who appreciate good food that they're doing a nice job. It's about a block from NJPAC-- safe area, and they may even have valet parking. Just a few more thoughts!

Don't know if either is open on Sunday nights, but I would check out Rocca in Glen Ridge or Village Green in Ridgewood. I think either would be a great choice for an anniversary dinner, and both are BYO. Don't know if it matters, but VG is probably a more 'romantic' atmosphere, but I was there with an eG group of about 14, so who could tell?

My dad, a fellow eG member, is in Oakland for the weekend and is staying right near Chinatown. He's without a computer, so I'm here to ask for him...do any of you have recs for a good place for dim sum tomorrow? Thanks in advance for the assist!! Curlz (in the soggy, soggy northeast)

Why don't we have a DROOLING emoticon?!? I am not a sweet freak, but I'm still thinking about the citrus cream-filled cannoli we had at Rocca...

Not sure how locked in on the location you are, but the first place I thought of is the Frozen Monkey on Wash St in Hoboken (around 6th, iirc)--it has everything you're looking for, but it's certainly not on/near Rts 80 or 287. I'm also wondering if there's anything in Madison, but it has been a few years since I lived out that way, so I'm not sure.
-
And of course, where is my cooking group meeting on Sunday afternoon? In Hoboken. Parking will be a CHARM.
-
DAMMIT! And I was so proud of that one, too. But DUH, Curlz--I knew it was Swedish. I'm blaming the Rx I'm taking.

Tommy, I just realized that I know exactly where you want to go for Swiss food... IKEA!!! What do I win??? What do I win??? NOW I'm being a wise guy. But I'm quite proud of myself for thinking of it...

I'm open the week of 10/11 except for that Friday... Or should we try to do this ( horror!) AT NIGHT instead if it's easier for people to get there?

Funny, but even since Mazur's was sold, I've continued to find that when I order a standard cake from them (i.e. white cake, choc mousse filling, (ALWAYS) whipped cream), people RAVE about it. And fight for extra pieces! Your call, but I've read and heard that although the ownership changed, the staff hadn't. Bonus: they'll deliver, if it's a huge cake--I've done that for events here at work.

Have to agree with you about Moghul, although it's been a couple of years since I was last there. But I think I had the goat roghan josh you mentioned, and as I recall, it was wonderful. As for Karma Kafe, that was the very first place where I ate Indian food, but I've not been back since discovering India on the Hudson. At the time, they were owned by the same people, but I'm not sure if that's still the case. All I know is that the kitchen, chef, and maybe the seasoning of the pots and pans and tandoor just wasn't on par with IOTH, and my then-b.f. loved IOTH more, so that's where we continued to go. I commented last night that it's a good thing for me that it's not closer to where I live, b/c I bet I'd be there or doing take-out 3x a week!

Disclaimer: I am NOT being a wise guy. There's the Swiss Chalet Bakery in Morristown, and they've been there forever...aside from satisfying whatever sweet craving you may have for Swiss food, I'm betting they could tell you if there's someplace in the area where you could find the savories!

You're right, Tongo! Today it hits my brain--globjobs (Gulab Jamon--if you say so) are in syrup--this was in milk--so I'm sure you're correct that it was Rasmali. Thanks for the clarification!

Tonight, in the true spirit of Rosh Hashanah, my mom and I had dinner at India on the Hudson. That kitchen just never disappoints! In my continued quest to have as many tastes as possible, I ordered the non-veg thali, which I mentioned somewhere upthread. And I get to have the leftovers tomorrow! For the lamb dish, I tried a new one this time--lamb saag. Great combo of tender lamb with spinach that was just perfect for me spice-wise--I had a light 'glow' after eating it. For the chicken dish, I went with their Tikka Masala, as I love it and hadn't had it in months. Rounding out the plate: a veg samosa (my choice, as I prefer it over the lamb), dal makhani (lentils), chick peas, naan, peas pulao (rice with peas in it), raita, and for dessert, something that sounds like globjob; I can only remember that much b/c it's what friends of mine used to call it! Spongy little balls floating in milk and a ton of sugar. To start off a sweet New Year, of course...
