  1. I thought the other Mamouns was in New Haven.
  2. hear hear for my money the bagel hole in Park Slope makes good, older fashioned bagels. A little smaller, nicely dense and great first thing in the AM when they are warm.
  3. Salt, Poppy Seed, Sesame Seed, Garlic, Onion??
  4. I actually like flagels. I think they eliminate some of the puffiness of modern bagels while at once increasing the sandwich surface area for spreads/pieces of CC / Whitefish etc... They make them in the traditional varieties without straying into blueberry land also. Another topic: I love everything bagels and they seem to be a NY favorite as well. Is this not authentic in the eyes of the Bagel "purists" on here?
  5. mjr's self-drawn, original, uninfringing square bagel horror: Aaaaaa!!! -mjr edit: yes it is poppyseed
  6. Wow this thread is making me hungry for a prepared, toasted cinnamon-raisin bagel with cream cheese, cut vertically into quarters. Yum.
  7. Saw an article in Brooklyn Courier this week that there is a new greenmarket in Windsor Terrace PS 10 School Yard 7th Avenue & Prospect Avenue Running thru November (Saturdays only) Probably smaller than the Grand Army Plaza one though...
  8. I got dragged to a vegan bakery once. Once.
  9. The theory is out there http://www.westonaprice.org/nutrition_greats/howell.html for example
  10. I am very interesting in checking the restaurant out! I noticed that the menu is available (I presume the non-changing items) on menupages.com for those who wish to browse (or live vicariously) cheers -mjr
  11. Red Hook/Carroll Gardens? Did you have any problems getting roof accomodations at Alma? -MJR
  12. I like Beet Greens steamed with the sliced roots in a pot with a few pats of butter, S&P and red pepper flakes if you like a kick... 20 mins give or take.
  13. It's not Jewel Bako but CUBE 63 on the Lower East Side is a decent sushi restaurant that also happens to be 100% corking fee free BYOB/W/Sake...
  14. Ate at Franny's last night. I have to agree with Fat Guy and with my girlfriend on the point that this is not a pizzeria, it is a restaurant serving artisan pizzas. I don't think a comparison of Franny's with Grimaldis, Totonnos, and the like is worthwhile. "Best Pizza in NYC" --- I don't know about all that. Definitely the pizza are expensive. Despite the ingredients and despite the method. I think you're paying a premium for the concept. They were out of the Pancetta and Egg pizza which pissed me off, one downside of locally sourced artisan ingredients I guess. 9:30 on a thursday. We ordered the sopressata, parm, olives appetizer which was ok. but the sopressata is not as distinctive and sharp as that from the Esposito Pork Store on Court St. I suppose we are spoiled. I think they should get better in time, curing good sopressata is not something you can perfect in a month or even three. They have an cocktail menu at Brooklyn prices ($7-8 for special cocktail). Didn't try the rhubarb concoction because I was in a Maker's mood. We ordered 2 pizzas, the garlic, tomato and olive pizza and the meatball/mozz/tomato sauce pizza. The crust really is very good, a nice char and crisp but still with a pleasant lightness. The meatballs were very good -- pork/beef blend about the size of a large marble each, 10-12 for the pie which was a little larger than the dinner plate it was served on. The mozz was ok -- not knocking my socks off with the presentation or the taste. The oven looks really cool --- a hunka hunka burning wood, eh; didn't get to check out the garden. I think I will try Franny's again, I have to have a date with that egg pizza. All in all though, at that price point probably rarely. cheers -mjr

  16. has anyone ever attempted to make beggar's chicken at home either in clay or salt dough? -Mjr
  17. Hopefully the justices are closet drunkard gourmands.
  18. Here is that thread: http://forums.egullet.org/index.php?showtopic=38922 I missed it as it is languishing on page 9. -MJR
  19. I don't know, but you must be thrilled to find an Orange Beef endorsement!
  20. The SCOTUS has agreed to hear a case regarding state bans of direct consumer purchase of out of state wine. Any commentary from the egulletensia on the ramifications of easier consumer wine purchasing? See the link below for this story about Supreme Court preparing to hear wine import cases regards -mjr http://www.mlive.com/newsflash/lateststori...40895742980.xml
  21. This thread is better than Jane Austen.
  22. Hell, I used to walk in around 4am on Sat.Night/Sunday morning, and that was early. You know what the problem is with Avalon......it's too "clean". All the rooms are gone. Blah. The only cool clubs that I went to that were not considered "underground" were Centro-Fly and China Club(because I could drink free), and Space Miami. Saturdays at Twilo were definitely their own league. I only did junior once or twice with friends, and of course the legendary DT night near the end. Avalon is weird because the whole upper "reaches" of the place are vip/bottle service.. around which, disgustingly enough, the whole club scene in the city is now centered. It is definitely more antiseptic than limelight. China Club is a tourist hellhole. I will miss Centro a lot. Hadn't been to much recently and their attempt at redecor was atrocious, but I had part of my first date with my GF there and many other fine nights --- Laurent Garnier, Digweed, DJ Sneak... -mjr
  23. True. True. I believe I saw Digweed's last show at Twilo. I'm sorry....I couldn't deal with it on Friday's. Too many 18 year olds trying to show me their glowstick skillz...... true true but some classic end of the nights around 4-7 am after all the chaff had cleared out I'd also note that it seemed a lot less diluted in the early days before they moved the DJ booth -- 96-97... before the place got the reputation it deserved. Avalon that is the current incarnation of the Limelight space is hit or miss. The crowd can alternately be pretty good or astonishingly obliviously bad (imo)... there's still something great about that vaulted room though. -MJR
  24. It seems unlikely but I recall liking the Orange Beef at the Noho Star, a place that hardly screams authenticity. -MJR
  25. Mother was purchased by an Alum of the club and is now FILTER 14, one of the best small underground dance music venues in the city. In some ways if not entirely it keeps the off-kilter soulful vibe of Mother going. Filter will probably be open another few years. Check it out when you can. Good fun. SPA/SYSTEM//KEY CLUB in all its many guises was always pretty much an NYU/tourist trap playing bad music to go with overpriced drinks. -MJR
