  1. Kim, my New Oxford Dictionary of English, which is about as authoritative as it gets, lists "expresso" as a variant spelling of "espresso," so you might want to ease up on that one. For some reason it gives no pronounciation guide for "culinary"; the online yourdictionary.com lists both. Although it's not quite the same thing, menus with "corn beef" or "whip cream" sometimes get on my nerves. I just say the serenity prayer to myself and move on. Actually, PopsicleToze, "Boss's Day" is indeed correct, at least according to The Elements of Style.
  2. I just picked up a pint (and ate some, of course) of Eggnog, a limited edition flavor. Pretty darn good, although I don't think I'd want to eat it on a regular basis. Still no Mayan Chocolate here.
  3. As mentioned in Tammy's original post, here's a link to a thread about last year's gathering. As an added incentive for you Tigers fans , they're at home that Sunday, playing Cleveland.

  5. The Best Western is two blocks from Chef's Station. BTW, David Richards, chef/owner of eG fave Sweets & Savories, was at Chef's Station before opening S & S. It's also two blocks from the El and Metra stations, which opens up all sorts of dining possibilities. For example, for Vietnamese restaurants, take the El (Purple Line) to Howard, then change to the Red Line and get out at Argyle. (There's lots of info on eG about that.)
  6. I had a very enjoyable meal a couple of years ago with Lady T at Chef's Station. I think it's a healthy walk from campus, but someone else will need to let you know exactly how far.

  11. Very well, and thanks for thinking of me. I'm looking forward to seeing you again. Will you be bringing any family or friends this year?
  12. Go to http://www.cityofchicago.org/Mayor/ and you'll be redirected to the correct page. Click on the teeny-tiny "Contact Us" at the top of the page. ← I do not believe that is a link to the Mayor's Office but to the City of Chicago. The page for the Mayor's Office dose not list an email. -Dick ← Yeah, I think you're right. Looks like we'll have to use that fax number under "Contact Info."

  14. So, has anyone besides me written or emailed Mayor Daley encouraging him to somehow nullify the City Council's well intentioned but hugely misplaced concern for poultry?

  16. Isn't there still an American Spoon Foods store in Northville? It isn't A2, I know, but not too far away, M-14 construction notwithstanding.
  17. I just emailed Mayor Daley's office asking if he intended to do anything to nullify the ban, especially given his comments noted in the Sun-Times article. Is it worth encouraging others to write or would it be merely tilting at windmills (or pissing into the wind, or...[your expression here])?
  18. Twingo's, yeah. Here's a review.
  19. If you're going to the DIA, how about lunch downtown at Rowland Café? You could combine it with a tour of The Guardian Building.

u.e., if you had some PX at Alinea (and I certainly can't fault even a usual non-drinker for doing so ), then you're not a teetotaler. Perhaps you didn't know that a teetotaler is defined as a person who never consumes alcohol. To sort of answer question 2, one can never cook off all the alcohol, so if your guest is unable or unwilling to consume even a tiny amount, pass on the PX. Here's some information about that.
  21. Huzzah!
  22. Slightly off-topic, but Herrell's, in Massachusetts, still makes Sweet Cream ice cream. I've eaten it several times at their Northampton store. I also love their espresso ice cream. They also make a "Private Stock Vanilla" that may be close to the one you make. Their web site says they'll overnight their ice cream on dry ice to "almost anywhere." The info is in the fourth question on the FAQ page.
  23. Thanks for the great tip, Ronnie! I picked up a 2-liter tonight at my local grocery store. I like it a lot, and I hardly ever drink soda. (Even after 30+ years in Michigan I still feel silly calling it "pop.") For lack of a better term, it tastes cleaner than other colas I've tried, with no unpleasant aftertaste.
  24. Our reservations are set! -- two dinners at Globe (inspired by Stalder's report) and one at 38. We also have a lunch reservation at Bijou. We'll probably hit up Boomer's, Tango Coffee Bistro, and/or Avoca for our other lunches. Report to follow in a couple of months...
  25. Beer. Seriously.
